I did an inside mount. each bracket is about 1/4 inch thick, and the metal rod extends beyond the vinyl by another 1/2 inch on one end and 1/8 inch on the other. in total there will be around 3/4 inch space on one side and 3/8 inch space on the other side not covered by the vinyl shade, so can pretty easily see outside at an angle. I was hoping to use in a bathroom window right near a shower, but will need to find a different window treatment that can cover more width of window for privacy. The vinyl itself isn't see through. Overall was pretty easy to install and not expensive, so it could be good for locations where privacy is not a concern, or possibly outside mount if privacy is needed. ... show more

Bought for windows & doors in a country home to replace old ones gone brittle with cracking vinyl & some what difficult pull down/roll up mechanisms and dirty from time & fly droppings. Not sure how old they are. New vinyl is soft & supple & nice smelling. Assembly is easy but takes a somewhat slow methodical approach to cut to the correct length & remove the excess vinyl & cardboard bands covering the inner adjustable metal tube. A larger flat head screwdriver popped off the end connector and pushing a smaller screwdriver into the channel to tear the cardboard bands one by one worked well to easily remove them. It turned out some shades were defective. One would only pull down and not roll up. The vinyl sheet was mounted on the roller at a slight angle so it hung slightly crooked. Amazon replaced it without requiring a return. Another also hung at an angle & was difficult to get to roll back up. Amazon replaced it & required the old one be returned. Another was hard pulling down and rolling back up and actually rolled itself back up and fell to the floor once. Amazon did not offer replacement but gave a refund upon return. 3 strikes policy I guess. Two windows are too wide so I bought Achim's 1 inch mini blinds but then I found shades are available in 3 widths. To be honest the mini blinds so far are much higher quality than the shades. But I want a simplistic camp-like feel in the home so I ordered another 6 roll shades hoping enough are good & I can just throw out the difficult or defective ones. Don't want to skew my return rate at Amazon. If the shades prove to be bothersome in the long run I will replace them all with the higher quality miniblinds. Both are very economical, functional, attractive products. In the photo, the shade on the door is OK. The one half way down the window is a bit hard to roll up & down. The one all the way down is a defective replacement that will not roll up. It does hang nice & straight though. :o) Update: discovered the shades that are resistant to being pulled down are mounted too tight in the brackets. Just push the adjustable end in a tiny bit and the shade should then roll down effortlessly. ... show more

I purchased these shades (4) because all of the ones available locally were about 3 times the price. I was pretty sure that these would not be of the same quality. Boy was I wrong. These were not only exactly what I had envisioned but I had all four installed in less than 30 minutes including attaching the brackets to the window frame. If you are looking for some kind of show stopping window treatment, then these are not for you. If you just want a little privacy while still allowing light into the room, I don't think you can find a better value. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. I needed a shade for my front door window as the door faces the sun and is unbearable at certain times of day. I was quoted $100 to add blinds so I went with this shade instead. The product was easy to assemble and install. It was easier than I expected (once I followed the instructions). The shade tears as easy as it is described. The cardboard comes right off and the plastic snaps as the instructions say it will. No tricks required. My only two complaints are that the metal on one side is a bit more exposed than what I would have liked and the material is not as thick as I expected. It blocks the sun enough to make a noticeable difference but the picture makes it seem more opaque than it actually is. Overall, I’m pleased and am satisfied with the product. ... show more

Update to previous review—now 4 stars. Looked up YouTube”how to fix” video and all I had to do is take it out and rewind it tightly and now all 4 retract fine. Previous review: The design is clever and I knew for this price they wouldn’t be extremely sturdy materials. I ordered 4. 2 of them will not retract and so are worthless. I waited to install them so I cannot get my money back. Was getting ready to order some more and realized two of them would not go back up once lowered… worthless. ... show more

Although this shade was fairly easy to install after watching the video posted below the product description, the quality is extremely poor. We can hear the spring banging around and know it's only a matter of a short time before the spring goes kaput. The thickness of the vinyl shade itself is very thin, about the density and thickness of heavy duty wrapping paper. We purchased this particular one only because we rent our home and don't want to invest too much money into someone else's house. If we owned our home and were staying here for a longer period of time, we would most certainly invest a little more money into getting a higher quality of shade. People on the other side of the door where the shade is installed can't see thru this shade into our house. When you're sizing the shade to your window, the cardboard tube between the vinyl shade and the metal core is already pre-cut so you just pull the extra length of cardboard off in sections after you trim the shade to desired length. Recommend this item ONLY if you're looking for cheap cheap cheap quality and don't care if it lasts too long. ... show more
