When spring rolled around and it was time to open the pool again, I knew I had to do something different this year. Last summer, I spent way too many hours dragging a manual vacuum across the pool floor, and frankly, I was over it. I wasn’t looking to spend $1,000+ on a high-end pool robot, but I needed something to keep the debris under control - especially with the amount of dust and leaves we get around here. After a fair bit of research, I landed on the Winny Pool Cleaner, mostly because of the transparent design, cordless setup, and what seemed like just enough power for a smaller, flat-bottom above-ground pool like mine. Straight out of the box, it looked slick. The design is modern, and the clear outer shell actually lets you see how much gunk it's picking up - which, oddly, makes cleaning kind of satisfying. Setting it up was dead simple - I charged it overnight, dropped it in the next morning, and hit the button underneath. It sank, powered up, and began its slow, almost meditative crawl across the pool floor. The dual-layer filter system - one cotton foam and one 180μm screen - did a decent job capturing leaves, sand, and even some fine dust. I wouldn’t call it industrial-strength suction, but for regular upkeep, it did more than I expected. Over a few weeks of use, the robot showed its strengths and a few weaknesses. The battery lasts about 60 to 75 minutes, which is usually enough to handle my 15-foot round pool. The smart navigation feature is a nice touch - it rarely gets stuck, and when the battery runs low, it coasts to the nearest edge like it knows it’s done for the day. I live in an area with a lot of winds and sandstorms, especially during this time of year. So, my above ground pool is always very sandy and dirty, the whole floor will be covered with a layer of thick dirt. We can vacuum and then after a day or so of high winds, the floor is completely covered. That being said, does this completely clean my pool? No. It would be absolutely crazy if it did because again, my pool is very dirty, and this time of year it's almost constant. But does it help manage the dirt level so it's a little less over whelming to keep up with? Yes! To me this is kind of like having a Roomba vacuum cleaner. Does it work as your only vacuum cleaner? In my experience, no. Is it still great to have and does it help use the regular vacuum less? Absolutely. A bonus is how fun this is to watch. It's like a Mars Rover on the bottom of the pool, it uses a little jet to push itself. It is amazing to me where the dirt goes and how it traps it in, but it definitely does, we clean it after every use and it has so much dirt it traps in which means it's working! It's also obvious it works because there will be a thick layer of dirt and then I can see the clean tracks from when it goes over it. I appreciate that it came with a hook too that attaches to any telescope pole so you can get it back out when the battery dies. Overall, I'm very happy with this robot vacuum.
