You need this or something like it. Don't say you don't. It takes one wrong hit. Do not send your kids out unprotected. The quality is all great on the chest protector. They padding is good where it needs to be and fits my kids well. They hardly notice it and I get no back talk like I do with a cup. It is light and comfortable for them. So do yourself a favor, get them a chest protector.

I got this sternum/rib protector shirt for my 8 year old daughter to wear for softball and basketball. I had looked for months for this type of protection but couldn't find one I really liked until I saw this one and it is amazing! This is the only shirt that offers both sternum and rib protection and that was important to me because sometimes she gets tagged out pretty hard in the ribs. She is 8 and she plays school ball and travel for both sports so we use this quite a bit and it has held up exceptionally well! I got her a size large and it fits perfectly with room to grow. I would definitely recommend this item!
