  • A solid two and a half star product
Like many, I was sold on the idea that this was a super convenient reusable mouldmaking material, great for short run moulds and undoing mistakes. Here is the thing, while it technically accomplishes this, it does so in a less than wonderful way. The first thing to know is that this will not replicate quality and details like quality platinum cure or tin cure silicones. It isn't as good as urethanes either. It is quite viscous, gells (hardens) fairly quickly, and doesn't vacuum degass. It can be pressure cast, but you still get flaws and bubbles stuck to details of the part, and suspended in the material itself no matter what you do. In short, it'll always be a last resort as it produces second rate castings at best. Second thing to know is this material is both water based and water soluble. That means a lot of materials don't like casting into it, because the water messes with the cures. Some coatings and mould releases can help with this, however they can mess with surface finishes you're trying to preserve. This also means it can't be vacuum degassed, as I mentioned before, because the water in it begins to boil. Partial vacuum and vibration can help release some bubbles, but even with special coatings on the masters you don't get rid of them all. It also is so moisture sensitive that even handling the mould, for the sake of demoulding for example, causes the material to transfer to your skin making a sticky mess. There are also release issues and mould longevity issues. Composimold likes to stick to everything, it really makes a phenomenal mess. Meanwhile you'd better expect your runs with it to be fairly short as it has less than ideal elasticity, tear properties, etc. Many of the stretch-to-release mould designs you're used to can be done in composimold, but only a few times before the damage it does to the mould means its time to melt it down and make a new one. ComposiMold is challenging to work with. It heats slowly and unevenly. A double-boiler or sous vide strategy means you have to start heating hours in advance, lest you cross that threshold and everything starts bubbling like crazy. The microwave is faster, but uneven, so you get bubbling in some areas and solid chunks in others. Oh and did I mention that there is no visually obvious way to tell if you've got still-solid chunks floating around in your mostly melted material? Finally, the material cuts rather poorly. If you, like most of us, often cast moulds as a single piece and then form a flawless parting line by cutting the mould, prepare to be disappointed. The material is hard to cut, it rubs off on the blade, and the resultant parting will be less than flawless so clear witness lines on the part will be present even from the first cast. If you wanted to pour two-part-moulds conventionally, that is to say pour half, apply release agent, then pour the other half, you're going to run into another problem which is that the hot liquid half is going to melt into and fuse with the original half. So why is this a two and a half star product instead of a one or zero star product? Well there are a couple advantages: Some silicones which are sensitive to cure inhibition can be cast into this material. That is quite handy if you need to cast something out of, say, a platinum silicone but need the mould itself to still be flexible. The material is innately semi-transparent. So if you tend to cast your moulds as one-piece, and cut them, you can readily see what you're doing. Food grade options are available, which is very handy if you want to have a play with casting food. Keep in mind though that the smell is unpleasant, and the material is water soluble, so your results may be less than wonderful..... Reusability is also a perk. but keep in mind whatever release agents you used will remain with the mould material when you melt it back down. I hope this review can help people looking at this product. If you know what you're getting into, maybe this is just the ticket for your application. In my cases though, the drawbacks always greatly exceeded the benefits. In a world where premium casting silicones can be had for about the same price per pound and with vastly superior properties, I very VERY rarely end up using ComposiMold. ... show more

  • Mind blowing
This stuff is ridiculously awesome! I’ve bought 3 times! Not because I ran out but because the uses are limitless especially for casting

  • Easy to use and mold with...
Product just as described... Although it says used, it didn’t have any debris leaving me to believe this batch came from production spillage which is basically unused... It’s easy to use and make molds with, the only drawback would be that it can be a bit messy...
