  • Good
Holds detail very well. Just a little difficult to get warmed up. You have to continually stop and stir but otherwise a good product.

  • Just because the product was used had no baring on its performance.
I used the product to seal the back of a scroll saw art piece so I could pore epoxy in the cutouts. It worked very well,no blowouts.

  • composimold is fanstastic stuff!
my project is a scroll type shape, a very large item that i only want to mold one tiny piece of and composimold helped TONS. now i dont have to throw away material if a mold gets torn or turns out bad, I can just remelt and recast. The raw composimold material does smell a whole lot likebutt hole, so dont be surprised if your pet tries to eat some! it seems like the odor goes away after the stuff gets used a couple times. ... show more

  • Let's talk about using concrete with these molds, I'm not crazy about it.
My current hobby has been making concrete pots and trays to go along with them. I have a great system down for making the pots, but trays are a different beast, and I thought I'd give ComposiMold a try for replicating and casting some existing trays that I love. I'm somewhat disappointed in the results of using concrete with this material. BUT, once you take into consideration the properties and characteristics of ComposiMold, it's understandable why I don't get perfect results. It is an awesome product, the price point is great, and the concept is awesome, and possibilities are endless because it's re-usable. But it just might not be right for my application. First, most plastic or rubber molds for concrete will leave you with a perfectly smooth finish on the casted concrete. Almost glossy. It seems you just cannot achieve those results with this product (And likely not with any products of this re-usable, meltable, water-soluble nature. You will be left with a rough, flakey, porous surface on the concrete if using this product. Why? I think there is just enough moisture in the concrete to compromise the surface contact of the mold, even when using a pure oil-based mold release. I think the moisture on the surface of the concrete is sucked out like a sponge and into the water-soluble CompiMold material. The heat from the curing concrete could also be a factor here. This makes the outer surface of the concrete weak, and flake off, leaving a rough surface. Is it the end of the world, gosh no. But buyer beware, don't expect to cast a perfectly glossy smooth object with this, and expect a perfect glossy smooth replica. I have tried letting the concrete cure inside the mold in a cold garage, using as little water as possible in the concrete mix, different mold releases (veggie oil and coconut oil), each time with the same results. I use "Cement All Multi-Purpose Construction Material" because it is super fine, has no aggregate, and can achieve a perfectly smooth surface. It's always highly recommended when casting concrete. I am a little disappointed because I did a lot of research on this stuff before I dropped about seventy dollars on it. They do say it works with concrete on a lot of the literature. And IT DOES 'work'. But the results are not great. I'm not sure what use I'll have for this product anymore. I have pictures to share, but I don't see the option to add them :( ... show more

  • Very cool stuff!
I purchased this gel for making molds for casting art projects. I was super tired of making one-off molds from pricey $ilicone molding systems. I received the "used" gel in a lump form, not like it is shown in the photos. I suspect someone bought tried and returned it- it had been poured into a plastic bag. Anyway, I melted and recast it into muffin tins, so it would be easier to use later.... I also did a test cast. The item I cast came out well. I would not say details were perfect, the gel is a bit soft for capturing and re-casting fine deets. But it casts form just fine. As with any molding process, under cuts are not well received by the gel. Better to cast in 2 parts if you have a complex model. I would recommend it for making proof of concept casts prior to spending big bucks on silicone molding materials. Notes: It is a bit tricky to get a cast without bubbles without using a vacuum chamber. I will use a vacuum phase next time. If you plan to cast larger molds, you should plan for making a rigid support to keep the mold from deforming. The manufacturer does have some useful how-to videos that deal with this and some other finer points of casting in gel. One really nice side benefit of this product: You can use it as a gel printing plate! This is the same stuff that gel plates are made from. Just melt is as per the manuf's directions, and pour it into a flat bottom baking dish. Let it set, and you have a gel plate that you can print monotypes with until the cows come home! So if you or someone else in the house wants to try gel plate printing (super-fun freeform art technique, check youtube for more info), this stuff can do double duty. Use only acrylics for printing– oil paints may alter the consistency of the gel over time. ... show more

  • sticky!
I didn't expect how sticky this would be. i melted on 50% power in microwave so it wouldn't burn. You have to stir about every 30sec after the first initial 2min (and use only 50% power). STICKY! messy, bubbly. If you have something simple to mold, it might not be too bad. Dries pretty quick if thin pouring. Bubbles didn't go away once dried. I used a bit of Vaseline to coat my dried foam clay project and it worked fine to release. Easily remelts to use again. Dried texture is ok, flexible yet hard.(if very thin can tear) Reminds me of that cinnamon red candy apple texture. I'm not sure why it is priced as high as brand new comparative products even though its used. Too bad there's not a way to pass it along to others after use. ... show more
