Installed this driver per instructions. Overview b4 I ordered did not say not to use extension cords. My coop doesn't gave power so purchased HD outdoor 20 foot cord for it. Unit heated water great 1st day. Left my birds for 2 days, came back and water was frozen solid. Almost lost my birds. Did test again and unit wouldn't even heat up. I was honestly expecting this to be made out of a thick plastic, I was very surprised when I pulled it from the box and it was a good thick metal with an enamel coating. It shipped and arrived quickly without issues, and I'm very glad of that as we just had our first below freezing night here. When I let the chickens out this morning I checked the 5 gal bucket and was a little surprised that the heater could be heard outside of it, but none of the little water cups were frozen over and the side of the bucket felt warm to the touch - maybe around 70-75 F. I do really wish the cord was longer though. It's a great thick one though, maybe 35mm2, not super big, but you definitely know it's going to hold up to the current and the cold it will be put through. I'm giving 5 stars for longevity for now, will update my review should that change. ... show more

    • Able to keep five gallon birdbath ice free in single digit temperatures
We converted a fire pit to a bird bath which hold about five gallons of water. This heater kept the birdbath ice free throughout the winter- including a stretch of single digit nighttime temperatures. No GFI trips. It has a 5' long cord so I didn't need an extension.

I use mine in a bird bath. It's not to deep and can cause it to almost become a sauna. I have to add water to it almost every day

    • Worked for 2 weeks, now just trips the gfci
Waited till the weather got cold enough to use it. It worked for about 2 weeks then stopped working. Found it trips the outdoor gfci outlet. Tried on another outlet and tripped it as well. Naturally it is now outside of the return window. Don’t recommend as it not reliable or long lasting.
