I purchased this after our zillioneth Mr Coffee machine died. We're purchasing a travel trailer and I thought we could use this on the TT and not use power like a machine would. We tried it at home first since the Mr Coffee machine died. It's now become our only coffee maker. It's a little laborious but the taste is worth it and there isn't anything mechanical to break, more or less. We purchased extra glass knobs in the event we do something dumb like drop the knob on the floor, which we did, but it somehow didn't break. For nine cups we use nine tablespoons of coffee (we use a regular coffee filter and just poke a hole in the middle) and it takes 10 minutes to heat the water to boiling and then we turn down heat a little and allow it to percolate for 8 minutes. We set timers so we can walk away and return when necessary. It makes super hot coffee and the bitterness I find in the regular coffee maker is gone. And the 9 cups really only ends up making the 6 cups we used to make in the Mr. Coffee machine. We use Trader Joe's French Roast coffee beans, grind it to about the same consistency as we did for the coffee maker which is not quite fine like espresso but not a coarse grind either. My partner who drinks more than one cup puts the hot coffee in a travel mug to keep it hot and then pours more into his ceramic mug when he wants more. I was debating purchasing an electric percolator bc the taste is so good but it'll probably break so we'll just keep using this. Sometimes low technology is best. ... show more

First off, I'm only using this for home use stovetop. I'm tired of buying coffee makers that always break. So, I decided to return to old school perculators. I looked and looked for a perculator from my youth. Yep, not happening. So, I decided on this stainless less one. Does the job nice. Glass knob nice....do not buy with plastic and ignore idiots complaining about the glass getting hot...duh! You do not need to use paper filters not no recurring purchases other than the coffee. Clean up.....I have a trash can I use for dumping the coffee grounds in....just bang the strainer cup on the side. Clean up, I use a mesh strainer basket from one of my past broken coffee makers and rinse the basket in it to prevents grounds from going down my sink. Otherwise, hot water and green scrubby does fine. Make sure glass lid knob is locked tight or may fall out and break. Dislikes....lid matched to coffee cup strainer instead of pot so if you take the coffee strainer out after finished perculating, the lid does not fit snug to the pot. Hinge...too small plus thumb rest too small... makes it hard to wash holding the lid open - it doesn't lock open and is floppy. Recommendations..... Remove hinge and have stand alone lid fit pot or widen hinge and add locking back mechanism.... no, just get rid of the hinge. Consider wider base to narrower top....more surface area in contact with stovetop. Make larger version...12 cup.....use heavier gage steel. Maybe look into a fine mesh replacing the holes for the spout. Start the no more coffee maker revolution! Buy perculators! So folks, what you have here is an inexpensive coffee maker that will last a life time. Does not require paper filters and can be used for camping or stove tops. It has few fail points....the glass knob will inevitably break from carelessness and the hinge is pretty much crapola. I say to vendor, make a premium version with heavier gage steel no hinges. Oh and if it is for camping get rid of the wood handle....duh! Fire....wood....burn. ... show more

This is probably a great pot, but the drip holes are huge. You have use a filter. I went with another pot with "classic" weep slots. I wanted a more natural coffee. I now love perked coffee.

I bought this product for a camp trip out West in Yellowstone. It works great and I love that you can gauge the strength of your brew by seeing the boil in the glass knob. It did however break after the first use. We used it over a good bed of hot coals and it perked perfectly, but the little hinge that connects the lid to the pot snapped off. It still works.
