  • handy and effective for seed starting
Just started using these Coco Coir Bricks for my veggie garden. They're pretty convenient. Soaking them in water and watching them expand is kinda fun, and they fluff up more than you'd expect. I used them to start some tomatoes, peppers, lemon balm, etc, and they're doing alright so far—I have sprouts. Love that it's all organic, makes me feel good about what I'm putting in my garden. It's light and doesn't clump up, so the roots should have an easy time. For the price and how much easier it's made getting my seeds going, I'm happy with it. Solid 5 stars from me. --- The Dude's Star Rating System (What do my star ratings mean?): 1 STAR - If it was really bad and I'd want a refund. 2 STAR - If it sorta did the job but I wouldn't buy it again. 3 STAR - It's okay, nothing special. Might tell someone about it, but I wouldn't go on about it. 4 STAR - It's good, does what it says. Would buy again and tell a friend if they asked. 5 STAR - Really like it, no complaints. Would definitely buy again and might even tell friends to check it out without being asked. ... show more

  • Pretty good
I've never used coco coir before, but I'm really into trying out new planting mediums with my houseplants. I recently acquired a rooted cutting of a monstera albo and am trying it out with a blend of this and perlite. First - I received two bricks of this. I used one brick inside this planter which is roughly 12 wide and 6 high. One brick isn't enough to fill that whole pot unless whatever you're planting already has a decent root ball. As stated, mine was a cutting with some roots. Second- these things absorb a lot of water, which was neat to watch. After the brick hydrated, I added some perlite to the mix to help add some nutrients to the mix, and to also help fill some of the empty space in the pot since I didn't want to use another brick. I carved out the center of the pot and filled that space will *all* perlite, then planted my rooted cutting in it. I've had great success with rooting plants in perlite and I'm feeling really optimistic that how I've done things will encourage root development to get strong before it reaches the coco coir. If you have an already established plant, you should be able to proceed business as usual. I know I shouldn't be taking such a risk with an unknown internet purchase on such a pricy plant, but I'm going for it. I'll be back to update, good or bad, after more time has passed. So far, I'm happy with it! ... show more

  • good starting material
This is fantastic to use for my seedlings to start them indoors. I put a brick into my bucket and add some hot water (cold water is fine too but I'm impatient and hot water gets the brick to break apart faster), perlite and put the material into seed trays/pots. The bricks are a bit smaller than the usual 1.4 lb sizes but the upside is that I don't end up making too much as it's impossible to cut the bricks in half when dry. This coco coir is clean and it's way better than using the potting mix they sell in stores as those always have gross gnats and other goodies mixed in. The coir also retains water so I don't have to keep checking the moisture so often. ... show more

  • Great seed starter
Funny thing about this seed starting medium. It came in a box that said... "Dear customer: Please read the instruction manual of the product carefully before using our product!" The funny part? There was no instruction manual. But... It's Coco-Peat. You put it in some water to hydrate it, then plant your seeds. That's the instruction. I suspect that the box was made for a different product. That being said, I've used this to start some seeds, basil and cilantro so far, and it works like Coco-Peat should. I'm also going to use this to loosen up the outdoor potting soil that I've been recycling for years. This is a good product, despite the warnings about reading those non-existent instructions. ... show more

  • Small and simple
Comes as a set of two skinny compacted bricks. This is the garden friendly coconut coir, not the long stranded reptile habitat substrate. There isn't any instruction on the packaging on how to mix up the coir as a seed started, which probably isn't a problem for those of us familiar enough to search for it, but just wanted to put that out there. While breaking it over a bucket, the coir felt and looked consistent in texture, a sign of being decently processed. ... show more

  • Perfect
Use it for mushroom substrate and it works just as well as the other coco coir product I have gotten in the past. It is 100% perfect coco coir. Works great for my needs, althought I feel the bricks are a bit small, smaller than the average size I use so had to break up one and a half to get what I needed. ... show more

  • This stuff is absolutely great.
I use this stuff mixed with a bit of potting soil in both my seed starting trays as well as my full size pots. I primarily grow tomatoes in a greenhouse and have always had success with coco. My suggestion is to shop around though as, like most things, the larger the quantity, the cheaper the cost overall. Nothing against this brand at all as it does exactly what it's designed to do and does it well. ... show more

  • Light weight soil
The box was a little messy so open with care. The soil was very dry as expected but absorbed water well. It was easy to prepare and made plenty of soil. Great item to have on hand.
