  • My experience with the Clockwise Caliper
Style: 8inch
I use my caliper a bit at home, but most of the time I use its abilities onboard my motor sailor, but this review would apply to those who use it primarily on RVs. Straight out of the box, it is one impressive looking instrument and is not flimsy in the least like so many cheaper plastic versions. I used it several times, the last when I had a malfuctioning bilge pump. This last time, a professonal diesel mechanic was using it, and a couple of days later I needed to use it myself. Unfortunately, the LCD readout was blank, so I assumed it was a faulty battery as it had just worked the previous week with the mechanic. I had forgotten that it takes a CR battery, and how you access it. Instead, I saw what looked like a charging port (in reality it was a data transfer port only, so I plugged it in. When that didn't work, I researched the issue, and found the CR battery door, and after opening that, I couldn't get the battery to come out. So I used a small screwdriver to try and free it, and this may have caused a short in the LCD battery. So I called Clockwise to see what they could suggest I do, and after telling them what I had done, they said they would be glad to send me a new caliper without charge, if I would just give them the Amazon order number. I received my new caliper the very next day after providing them with the requested information. I plan to give the same caliper to a couple of guys that work on my boat as it would make a perfect gift. ... show more

  • Exceeds Expectations.
Style: 6inch
I bought this for the big display and the fact that it uses the common 2032 battery that I keep on hand for several other tools and appliances. The display is as big and clear as I hoped. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the battery slides in and out of the top - no screws like the previous 2 calipers I had. The calibration certificate was another surprise. I don't need machinist level accuracy for most of my lutherie work, but it is nice to know the tool is manufactured to close tolerances. The final surprise was the RS232 data port on the slide. I don't need it, but it is another indication that this is an industrial quality tool. Hopefullly it will last longer than my previous calipers. ... show more

  • Just received, trashes a HF digital caliper for $3 more
Style: 6inch
I recently damaged my digital caliper and needed a replacement. I do not need ultimate precision. So I bought a Harbor Freight digital caliper for $23. In store I had to open a few boxes to find one that works. Once I got it home I zeroed it and used it once and then it stopped reading. Just had 0.000 on the screen. So back to Harbor Freight it went for a refund. A Google search led me to these calipers. The reviews were positive but many compared the quality to high end calipers rather than comparing them to low end calipers. Let's face it, these aren't going to compete with a $100-500 digital caliper. With so many metrics to test I am sure these calipers will fall short. But I'm not building a space shuttle, just some plinkers. Where these shine is how they demolish other sub $50 calipers for the price. The Harbor Freight digital caliper for $23 feels as if it was milled by a sandblaster compared to the smoothness of these calipers. These are also much smoother than the $30+ Cabela's digital caliper that I broke. So if you're looking for a caliper that will feel pleasant while sliding, hold zero and not break the bank these are them. ... show more

  • Polish before using
Style: 6inch
This product does what it's supposed to do and at a good price. A couple of things to note, however. The product arrived with a dead battery inside and the extra battery it came with was also dead! More importantly I think, the surfaces on mine were very rough and unpolished. I use this on guitars and, to avoid causing damage while measuring, I had to spend some time polishing the surfaces of the tool nice and smooth. It's not a big deal, but something to keep in mind. Still, seems to be a solid tool and I do not regret my purchase. ... show more

  • Not a Harbor Freight special, and not a Mitutoyo
Style: 8inch
I'm not a professional machinist. I am a semi-talented amateur however. I own a linear caliper from Harbor Freight, and I occasionally use Mitutoyos at work. I bought this (8") to treat myself This makes the HF calipers look like toys. On the HF, I can close the jaws lightly, then roll the wheel hard and see 0.1mm of change. On this one, I see 0.01mm. This is slightly less smooth than the Mitutoyos at work (running the jaws in and out feels just slightly rough), but functionally it works just as well. Accuracy is fine on a couple of things I checked (within 0.02mm of the Mitutoyo), repeatability is excellent. These are also heavy. But I love the display - something you can read from across the room. Good clear font with good contrast too. It comes with Auto-on (move the jaws and it comes on) and Auto-off, features that a few calipers I looked at buying before this were missing. Roughly the same price as an equivalent Harbor Freight caliper, but twice the value. Roughly the same capabilities and accuracy of a Mitutoyo, but at 1/3 to 1/4 the price. I'm gonna dock it one star, but that's purely for not being quite as smooth as a Mitutoyo. Of course, I can buy three or four of these for the cost of one Mitutoyo. ... show more
