Description

In the most dazzling debut feature in cinema history, twenty-five-year-old writer-producer-director-star Orson Welles synthesized the possibilities of sound-era filmmaking into what could be called the first truly modern movie. In telling the story of the meteoric rise and precipitous fall of a William Randolph Hearst–like newspaper magnate named Charles Foster Kane, Welles not only created the definitive portrait of American megalomania, he also unleashed a torrent of stylistic innovations—from the jigsaw-puzzle narrative structure to the stunning deep-focus camera work of Gregg Toland—that have ensured that Citizen Kane remains fresh and galvanizing for every new generation of moviegoers to encounter it. SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrackThree audio commentaries: from 2021 featuring Orson Welles scholars James Naremore and Jonathan Rosenbaum; from 2002 featuring filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich; and from 2002 featuring film critic Roger EbertThe Complete “Citizen Kane” (1991), a rarely seen feature-length BBC documentaryNew interviews with critic Farran Smith Nehme and film scholar Racquel J. • 4K UHD will not play on old Blu-ray players don't assume it's defective
Blu-ray and 4K UHD both work great. Don't assume the 4K UHD doesn't work if you tried it in your Blu-ray player and you got an error message. Make sure you are playing the 4K UHD disc (disc 4) on a 👌4K Blu-ray player👍or it won't play at all... at least it wouldn't on my old Sony Blu-ray player. When I put it in my Panasonic 4K UHD Blu-ray it worked fine. Rating's for the disc not the film...obviously. ... show more

  • Audio tracks didn’t age well
Well all know the movie. Decent transfer, 4k pulls up the shadows a bit more. The commentary though! Ebert recorded this like 10-15 years ago. The did a poor job with an automated recording synch track. The kind Rifftrax did when they first started out. But there was no remaster of Ebert. Same cheap quality and they never edit out his inhales, which in dolby surround, are quiet grating. They could have gone back to the audio files and remastered them as well. ... show more

  • arguably the greatest film ever made and the blu ray has finally been fixed Feb 14th 2022
I purchased this set recently and received one of the first run with the contrast wrong from about 30 minutes in.... truly not nearly as fine a result as the blu ray which has been out for years. Within a week of my return Amazon posted this new listing , put it on sale so I took another chance and THIS item is what you want! Rather than go on and on about the film which has been done forever, I just wanted to assure potential buyers that this particular version of the blu ray from Criterion is the updated version. ... show more

  • BAD DISC FROM CRITERION
The blu-ray disc was defective and I understand that Criterion replaced this defective set with a later release and new upc code. Why was this still available from Amazon?

  • Defective UHD disc
I bought this 4k edition and stops at the same place every time. 48 minutes in, the image freezes, after a few minutes, it jumps a couple chapters ahead and wont let me view the content in between

  • REALLY?
Both copies I ordered, the 4k disc would not play. Criterion really screwed up on this one.
