  • CHUWI FreeBook N100: a serious unit. CHUWI really wants you to know their name...
Color: Gray
I came in with low expectations. Like you, I'd never heard of this CHUWI brand. For the price I paid and for what was advertised, I was hardly expecting the unit to show up. A few days ago, there it was. All that was promised by the listing was true. No frills, no bloat-ware, just an incredibly snappy and efficient windows 11 tablet PC. Nothing about the laptop feels or says "budget", save for the "CHUWI" branding on the body itself. Very spartan packaging. You get a cheap a/c adapter, and a laptop in a styrofoam sleave. The laptop itself is all that matters. Rock solid build, full aluminum body, excellent keyboard, massive track pad, great hinge design. After use for a few days, I am thoroughly impressed by this laptop. If you are in the market for similar name brand tablet/laptop PCs, but you are looking for a great deal, don't hesitate to buy this freebook N100 model. I bought in early, prior to any reviews or videos, seeing as this FreeBook was just released with a more appealing Alder Lake N100 processor, in comparison to the older N5100 models out there. The N100 is more powerful, and more efficient. The specs of this machine blow most competitors at this price-point out of the water. 12GB of LPDDR5, M.2 hard drive, type-c ports, 12th gen intel, plenty of type-c USB ports, 3.5MM audio jack, a crisp, touch-enabled display, and a minimalist aluminum design. Startup happens before you can blink, thanks to the modern hardware. So far, it has never felt bogged down from my general use. It also runs games and heavier tasks just as well as any other modern mobile machine with integrated graphics. Out of the box, the windows 11 install is bone-stock, which is fantastic to see. There is virtually nothing a general user needs to do to optimize the OS. Unfortunately, you will still need to deal with all of the general garbage that comes with stock windows... The biggest letdown for this machine is windows 11, which has nothing to do with CHUWI. It is what it is. The battery life has been great. Around 10 hours when doing lighter tasks. I keep my screen near full brightness at all times. It also charges very quickly. It's hard to ask for more. This product deserves 4 or 5 stars as priced. The downsides in my opinion are as follows: -CHUWI branding on the lid, and integrated into the bezel of the screen. I really wish it was just a blank slate, as pictured in the amazon listing. It's not. You will see the strange name CHUWI on your sleek, full-metal laptop at all times, in full-caps and bold print. They are really proud to put their name on this machine, I can't fault them for that. A few stickers, or a custom skin will be the solution to that problem for me later. -The bottom margin of the screen/bezel feels abnormally large and intrusive, paired with the hinge placement in that same area, and the massive CHUWI logo, it disrupts the sleek feel of the unit to some extent. When in tablet mode, the chunky bottom bezel is more frustrating. The top and side margins of the bezel are nice and thin, at least. -When in tablet mode, it is frustrating how exposed the keyboard and trackpad are. The keys and trackpad do deactivate when folded away, though. I suppose this is just the nature of convertible laptops. -Power/sleep button on the side of the unit was a poor choice. When the machine is on your lap, if you allow it to sink between your legs at all, you will accidentally put the machine to sleep. It happened to me a moment ago while writing this. Something to be aware of. -The speakers are very underwhelming. -No HDMI output without using a type-c adapter. This goes for any peripherals you will need that aren't type-c. I realize this is just a reality of this segment of laptop. -The generic A/C adapter feels cheap. It seems to work fine, but it looks like the bare minimum. -No accessories. It's a brown box with a charger and a laptop. Assuming after-market support will be limited, a case, keyboard protector, or a protective sleeve would have been a nice touch. -The screen, body, and keys do not hold up great to fingerprints. It seems they may have skipped the oleophobic coatings that you will find on higher-end machines or devices. It could be the surface finishes or material choices for the keys. It could just be me, but it seems worse than some newer products I've used recently. lots of wipe-downs required. Hopefully, this review gives you a good ideal of what you are in for. The hardware you get is an amazing value. There are no major flaws. I have no regrets. I will be keeping an eye on the CHUWI lineup in the future, no question. This laptop is a thoroughly modern machine that belongs in 2023. ... show more

  • Frustrated
Color: Gray
Received my Freebook 2in 1. Booted up fine, but screen was dark, barely readable. Tried adjusting the brightness display setting to max, no change. Turned computer on and off, no change. Was messing around and for no reason I can figure out, the screen went to normal brightness. I thought, great it fixed itself. Began setting up my icons, inputting my passwords, etc. came back to it next day and display is back too being to dark to see clearly. Trying to troubleshoot problem on web, but no answers. And computer has my personal info on it now, so not comfortable returning the device. Very frustrated. I saved up for this computer and was looking forward to using it. Disappointed… I will not be buying CHUWI products again. ... show more

  • For under $400, a great bargain
Color: Gray
I bought this because I had a need for a modern Windows 11 machine. I am using this for personal and business, not for gaming or video generation. It has been great for business (running Microsoft Office/Teams), surfing the web watching videos and listening to music. 1) The Battery: Unlike some others, I am getting about 6 hours of real-world battery life. I keep my brightness down and my use case may be the reason. But I have no major issues. The battery estimator says 8 hours on start, I get about 6. That's close enough in Windows World. So 4 stars there. That is more a Windows issue that CHUWI's though. 2) Charging: For those with issues charging - realize only one USB C on the computer is for the charger. Plug it in right, it will charge. Also it is a 12V charger, you cannot use any random 5 volt USB C charger. I have had no issues. A spare charger is about $24. Look before you plug in! 3) Screen: What a screen! I can stare at it all day. Great color, responsive touchscreen, Amazing at this price point. 4) Keyboard: Keyboard is great, and reinforced. Does not bend in the middle. Keyboard back light at this price point is a big plus. 5) Speed: For my use case, it is plenty fast. I don't see any slowdowns. Summary: For under $400, I got a fast computer with a great screen that runs Windows 11 flawlessly. Stays charged for a long time, and has multiple USB C ports for extra screens, etc... This is a win for anyone needed a general purpose PC, you get a full laptop at a netbook price. ... show more

  • Surprisingly good machine, with a couple small flaws.
Color: Gray
Pros: - Very snappy considering the E-core driven N100. Really impressed with the performance of this little chip. Never expected that. - The screen is the real standout here, imo. Shockingly good contrast and clarity. If you had told me it was an OLED, I would have believed you. It's really, really good. - Plenty of ram of regular windows use. - Pretty good sized ssd. - Touchscreen and tablet mode! The screen is very responsive to touches. - Keyboard is OK. It's definitely isn't going to win any awards, but it's less mushy than I would have expected. Cons: - Trackpad is easily the worst part about it. It's textured in a way that works against you sliding your finger (not unusable, but not great), and the click takes a LOT of pressure and is very difficult to press in some places; impossible in others. The one saving grace is that tap-to-click is enabled by default, and believe me, you're going to need it. Clicking this thing is an exercise in frustration. There's very little feedback, it feels and sounds brittle, and you're much better off just using taps and two-finger taps to use it. Might be even better off using a mouse. - Not surprising, but windows will need to go through a lot of updates when you unbox it. Set aside like two hours to let it do its things (or more depending on your internet speed). It was still usable while churning through updates, which was frankly surprising given the little N100 CPU. - The hinge is kinda weak. You have to over-move the screen to move it into a new position. I'm not really worried about it breaking, but it definitely is far from impressive in how it feels to move. ... show more
