  • A fantastic little steel (portable) Kamado style grill
Color: Red Style: Grill
I have used a large ceramic Kamado grill for years. They are amazing. I wanted to have a similar experience camping but you can't easily move a ceramic kamado. This Akorn Jr. fills that niche. It is very well packed and assembles well, except for the lid handle mounts on each end, the access to the bolt to secure is very tight and limited. And I have a large assortment of mechanic's tools of all varieties, so its not a easy solution. However, once assembled the grill works well. I washed the grates as recommended and tried to towel dry but the many surfaces made it difficult. Even slight drops of water in short time rusted part of the cast iron grill grate, but no worry I heat conditioned it and then put oil on it as directed, then cooked a bunch of stuff on it and the usual grease and smoke coated the surfaces so it looks like it won't be an issue. For those new to these grills, don't over clean anything. The less cleaning the better really, smoker grills improve with some use. I was able to easily fit 3 breasts and some sausage with room to spare. Its not a small grill space as some mini-Kamado's where you barely fit two burgers at a time on them! Temp control - the bottom vent slider is loose in the groove, I may bang the U groove a little to tighten it up but hey its working. The top uses a o-ring and seals nicely. The top vent control is very well constructed and has good reference marks 0 - 5 (as does the lower). At first I had a bit of issue getting below 300 but its new and I was gradually totally closing the top vent as I was learning about this new grill. When I went below 1 on the top and 1 on bottom it got the fire clamped down and I had to open a bit to get fire going again. After the cooks it does not seem to have any problem shutting off the flame. When it was going hot and I shut down it had smoking coming out from behind the badge on the top dome - not much but it was surprising it wasn't sealed. I can take care of that with some RTV, but not everyone has that laying about. I do wish the lid latch was magnetic or something so I could avoid the awkward latch mechanism but on the other hand it does seem to seal well. Portability - Its heavier than expected, not something you'd carry all the time but for what it does - cook awesomely - its fine. You can't easily disassemble to move it so it is what it is. Firebowl - a Steel firebowl and bottom grate are part of the design. The bottom grate spacing seems a bit wide and smaller bits right out of the lump bag will fall through - I am thinking of adding a grate on top of it or mesh or something so this doesn't happen as much. EDIT - in actual use I have not had issues with lump falling through which was surprising. Overall a wonder of a mini kamado gril that if you keep out of the elements should really give you a ton of enjoyment and the bragging rights to the best BBQ in the campground. Or patio. EDIT: have cooked more on it and like it - SUPER efficient compared to my larger ceramic Kamado grill. Uses maybe 1/3 the lump, so while I bought this for camping I'm using it with my other grill on a regular basis. When I took camping I got a lot of attention people asking about the Egg I had on the picnic table. ... show more

  • Excellent build quality, very unexpected at this price.
Color: Red Style: Grill
This thing takes up a lot less room than my old offset smoker-grille, uses less fuel (insulated body), and is just plain pretty sitting on the patio. This little rascal can still perform admirably cooking for 4. Anyone cooking for a party larger than 4 should seriously considering getting something larger. ... show more

  • Wonderfully inexpensive way to get into Kamado cooking.
Color: Red Style: Grill
First off let me say that I am kind of a BBQ super freak. I have owned just about every kind of charcoal/gas grill/smoker you can think of, except a Kamado grill. I've always wanted one, but have been put off by the price, and have been apprehensive about how well they might work in Denver given the altitude. Then I saw this surprisingly affordable little Akorn cooker by CharGriller on Amazon for $168 or just under $200 with the ceramic deflector plate, (essential if you plan on doing any indirect cooking), so I decided to go ahead and pull the trigger on it. The Cons: I would have given this little cooker 5 stars, were it not for the issues I ran into during assembly. For as simple as this thing should be to but together, it is annoyingly difficult. The first problem I ran into was with attaching the lid to the base. The lid comes with the hinge part already on it, and you attach it to the base with the provided 7/16" bolts. Easy enough to do, but once completed, the base and the lid didn't line up. No amount of loosening and adjusting the hardware helped. No matter what I tried, the lid was still cattywampus. I finally had to get some stainless steel washers to put on the bolts between the hinge and the base to get it to line up perfectly. The second problem I ran into was trying to install the handle that lifts the lid. The brackets on either side of the handle are supposed to screw into the lid with the provided hardware. The way the brackets are designed there is no way to get a screwdriver to line up straight on with the bolt, no is there room to get a socket or a wrench in there either, so it is nearly impossible to get the bolts in without cross threading them. Between the lid alignment issue and the handle problem, I probably messed around with this thing for 1.5 hours getting it put together, when it should have only taken 5 minutes! Now for the Pro's: Other than for the assembly, it is hard to find anything negative to say about this little unit. One thing to note, this is not a ceramic cooker as you will find with other Kamado tile grills. It is made of steel with "triple insulated walls". However I did not find this to detract from it's performance. In fact it is much lighter and easier to handle than a comparable ceramic cooker, yet it was still very efficient and held it's temperature very well. The unit seems well constructed and looks amazing. It comes with a really nice 14" diameter cast iron cooking grate. The center of the grate is removable to allow for charcoal or wood to be added mid cook if you need to, although this thing is so efficient I doubt you will need to add fuel for most cooks. I dumped in about a full large chimney full of lump charcoal, and fired this thing for 1.5 hours wide open to season the grate. It achieved about 650 deg. Then I cooked a rack of ribs on it for 2.5 hours at 250-275 deg's and still had a fair amount of unburned charcoal left in the bottom of the cooker. All in all, i thought it held temperature very well. The top and bottom vents regulate the temperature. For the first I'd say hour of the cook, the temp held steady at 260 deg with no needed adjustment. After that the temp slowly started climbing. When it got to 280 deg, I did my first vent adjustment. Fair warning, a little goes a long way in terms of adjustment. Over shooting both to the up and down side is easy to do. I spent the rest of the cook playing with the vents every half hour or so. I think once I get some experience under my belt with it I will get much better at controlling the temp. All in All, I have to say I'm loving this grill. It is the perfect size for when you are cooking for just one or two people, which is for me most of the time. You can't go wrong for $200. ... show more

  • 3rd one I have bought.
Color: Red Style: Grill
I love to grill and smoke. (Smoke meat) I carried one of these in the back of my truck in the oilfields of West Texas for 5 years. I ate almost every meal off of it. It's built really well. It cooks hot and fast. It may take some time to figure out how to cook on it if you let it get hot which is how I prefer. The second one I bought I gave to my friend after giving away the first one. So I bought a 3rd one and use it regularly. ALSO, you can cook for a big crowd with this little dude and everybody eats hot food at the same time if you know how to grill. ... show more
