The Chapin 8701B Garden Seeder takes the back strain out of garden planting. Designed with a durable powder-coated steel frame, poly seed hopper, 6 interchangeable seed plates that accommodate 20 seed types and a wide rear wheel that replaces and pats the soil, the seeder plows and places the seeds at the appropriate intervals without jamming. Also featuring an adjustable row marker you can set and follow for the correct spacing of the next row. In properly cultivated soil, the seeder easily plows, plants covers and pats the soil over with each pass. This seeder is very light and somewhat hard to use as it gets stuck on clumps. If there is any tilled up plant matter it won’t cover the seed so you have to go back and cover them manually. I planted corn with it and it worked well I planted 300 ft long and 15 rows the row guide should be left off unless you really need it because it doesn't lock into place

Planting sweet corn. When pushing the planter and came upon a rock, it would get hung up and push the planter out of line and skip seeds. Wish it was rear driven instead of front which makes it only get a 3 1/2 star rating.

I think it's a great product, however I think the plate specifically labeled for corn isn't right. At least, for the peaches and cream variety from Southern States that I planted. I noticed when going down each row that the planter would drop multiple seeds per "scoop" from the plate. After germination the seeds were way too close obviously. Perhaps next planting I can try a plate smaller and maybe it'll only plant one seed at a time and not multiple. ... show more

Before I purchased this tool I first made the furrow using string as a guide. Then second step is I put the seeds in the furrow and third cover the seeds and pat the ground. This tool does it all for me and even marks the next row. Great time and work saver

When using this to plant sweet corn, I found that I had to hand plant a quarter of my garden as the seeds didn't come out. Yes I was using the correct plate.
