  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Seemingly Well Built Compromised Antenna
The quality of workmanship is excellent. The SWR is higher than advertised, but reasonable and should tune with any radio's onboard tuner. The SWR ranged from about 1.8:1 to 3.2:1. Adding two counterpoise wire sets made for the Super Antenna cut for the 17m, 15m, 11~12m, and 10m band varied the SWR 0.1 to 0.2 up or down on the various bands and ancedotally seems to improve performance slightly on 80m and 40m, both bands for which the antenna is short or compromised in performance. Signal reports from ancedotal test suggest the Chameleon Emcomm III portable antenna is about -6dBr from my 130ft Ultimax 80m-10m EFHW. The EFHW antenna was an so-so performer until grounded and choked at the feedpoint. Now it is my go to antenna thanks to testing of EFHW done by Steve Ellington using and RF ammeter and other nearfield tools. The Emcomm III needs more testing in different configurations. So far I have not used it with a choke or grounding. Chameleon highly recommends choking at the feed point. I've only deployed the Emcomm III in an inverted-L and sloper. The inverted-L configuration was to done to match the EFHW and compare 80m NVIS propation in side by side testing. It was this comparison where the Emcomm III was reported to be about -6dBr. However, the Emcomm III ideal NVIS configuration is a low hung OCFD according to the manual. I need to order the Chameleon coax choke and retest the antenna as a OCFD. The EFHW is good performing antenna, but for man portable ops I need a smaller antenna that will fit in my man portable go-bag for my FT-857D. The Emcomm III portable checks the box, but I may be testing the Packtenna 20m/40m EFHW to see if it checks the box better when extended to cover 80m for NVIS. If testing in other configurations improves performance on 80m and 40m, I may revise the Emcomm III to a five star rating. The antenna failed due to an open from the center pin of the SO-239 to the soldered wire. Chameleon was very quick to respond and offer repair of product. As I never got advertised SWR and the performance was in my opinion less than stellar the manager, John, thinks it may be possible that there may have been a cold solder joint. Also, the newer versions are no longer packed with dielectric grease. It had been added as heat sink for the transformer, but the transformers did not run cooler as hoped. So far customer service has be excellent. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Almost disappears from view
This is supposed to be a portable antenna, but I am using it as a permanent install in my HOA restricted home. Once installed it almost disappears from view. I have it coming out of a second story window and running to a tree in my back yard. It runs on an azimuth from 30 degrees to 210 degrees and provides really great NW to SE reception and transmission. The matching network is 2.0 to 1 on everything except 40 meters where it's 3:1. There i use the internal antenna tuner on my rig and it does just fine. Today after installing it I heard PSK from Serbia here in Auburn, AL. That's 8,703 km. Not bad for a wire antenna. But here's the really good part. When I got this, the wire on the antenna was broken. I called the company and they had one out to me the next day. I installed it, put it up, and I am very happy. I would recommend this antenna for anyone in a restricted environment who wants to work multiple bands. Check out the company's website to see the radiation patterns of these antenna. This one is excellent. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Clever and Functional
I took a chance on this based on only two reviews, however, I couldn't be happier. I took it out and tossed the wire over a couple of tree limbs, tuned the radio to the antenna and I started making contacts. First on 40 meters. Then on 80 meters. The limbs I used were fairly low to the ground, so I suspect I was doing mainly NVIS, but it worked. The small package fits nicely into a tiny pack I bought for the radio along with a battery. I'm now fully mobile on HF. I like the setup. It's built for mobility. the base is designed as a wire wrap. I love the carabiners that protect the wire from pulling from the mount. It's well thought out and well designed. The wire itself is stout, though thin enough so that the whole package is relatively light. It's even got a clever bungie cord to hold it all together, and again, designed into the base. Clever and functional. What more do you want? ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Yes, it enables contacts
Can't say enough about this antenna. I have it paired with an IC-705. Used exclusively in the field for POTA - thrown in a tree. I operate mostly digital and CW. I'm heard. RBN and other stations. Repeat. I heard and am heard. Downside: the bungee that keeps the wrapped wire in place does flap in the way when winding and unwinding the wire. I will craft removable key-ring or binder ring option unless Chameleon would send me their idea/option. ... show more
