This will be a moderately comprehensive review of Cecilio CVN-200 violin First of all my knowledge of violins is limited but I'm learning everyday. I do have a music background playing trumpet in school and piano at home with some compositions on the side. I've always wanted to learn violin and finally decided to try. 100 bucks for a violin, does it even work? I received this instrument four weeks ago and am extremely happy with it. The outfit for this is great for the price. You get everything you need to start playing and more, ie. TWO bows, TWO sets of strings, an extra bridge, a case, a shoulder rest, a simple tuner, and a cake of rosin. All of these are essential for playing the violin and you get them all. Also, the bow and strings are very delicate parts so having two in case one breaks is a huge plus for a newbie. The violin itself also comes with four micro tuners (at the bottom end of the strings) rather than just one on the e string that even some 500 dollar outfits are lacking. This is an excellent value for this price. Now, none of this stuff is of the highest quality, far from it. The bows were slightly twisted, the rosin is barely usable (but is), the bridge is asymmetrical (by design not defect), the case pocket zipper sometimes fails, the pegs do slip, and the micro-tuner hooks need readjusting. However, all of this, though unthinkable for an intermediate player and up, are more than manageable for a beginning player. So how does it sound? Well, the last violin i touched was over ten years ago and I have no others to compare with. Having said that, it plays quite well, at least it produces a sound akin to other violins I've heard. My understanding is that violins at this price are normally considered junk and unplayable. This one has quite a DECENT SOUND. Some of the other reviewers mentioned that even his/her teacher was impressed with its sound. In fact, it plays well enough that I absolutely positively love practicing on this violin. Since receiving this little thing I have not missed a single day of practice and on average spend one and a half to two hours each day on it! Something I never thought I would do. Having said all of that, the one thing holding this back are the included strings. The strings take precision bowing to respond at its full potential (which isn't high). As a beginner, one tends to bow wobbly and bouncy-like which causes the bow to slide up and down the strings. The strings respond by losing resonance and whistling or shrieking. Cleaning the strings of rosin helps, and so does re-rosining the bow. As I said all the shortcomings of the product are manageable. However, once I got better at bowing I realized the strings were holding me back which is a good thing rather than replacing the entire violin. I just recently put in an order for a set of Thomastik Dominant strings (35 USD). I read that even with a 300 dollar student violin, you should replace the included strings with much better ones (usually Dominant set is recommended). I consider this upgrading the violin to meet my own growth as a violin student rather than a shortcoming of the original purchase. Again, I absolutely love playing on this violin. For such a small investment you get so much, everything you need to learn and develop your skill... until you outgrow it. I am already looking at intermediate violins between $750-1100 since I now know I want to stick with it. This violin is perfect for someone who wants to try out the violin but not yet committed, at least not enough to spend $300-500 on a typical student violin. Considering price, 5 STARS for an excellent violin.

After careful research, we purchased this violin for our daughter. Although some feedback left us the impression that the bow might be sub-par and the rosin might fall apart, everything in this package exceeded our expectations. We purchased ours from Austin Bazaar and the item arrived with everything promised in the condition promised. The bows in the package are very nice. The rosin was boxed and when opened, it was encased in plastic on three sides which allows the user to draw the bow across the open side. I don't even think my daughter got any rosin on her. My husband only had to score it a little bit to get it started and it worked wonderfully. Although we had warned our daughter to look up instructions for attaching the bridge, the violin came with the bridge attached. It is a lovely violin and the finish is very nice. It makes a beautiful sound once the bow is properly covered in rosin. The case is also very nice. The exterior is soft but the interior is a lined hard case that cradles the violin. There are places for all the accessories and the strap makes it easy to carry. Many reviewers said a violin will lose tune until it is broken in. Our violin did lose it's tune very quickly but, as many reviewers recommended, I ordered peg drops along with the violin and they solve the problem beautifully. This violin is a fabulous compromise if you are new to playing or want something for practice that isn't terribly expensive. We searched music stores all over our area and found nothing remotely comparable or as reasonably priced. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Cecilio again.

So right off the back, it needs a lot of work before you can use it. First the strings that come with it are garbage. Recommend buying better strings for this violin. Also to keep the violin tuned, you have to push the tuning pegs in once you tighten the string. Otherwise, the string will become loose. Also, if you stay with the strings that come with the violin, you can not tighten them with the tuning pegs alone. You also have to hand screw down the fine tuners on the tail piece. If you try to tune the violin with the tuning pegs alone, you will break the strings. The case was really nice and the electronic tuner is not bad. The bows that come with it are raw and you will need to use the rosin on them. Now, this was the most annoying part. The rosin that it comes with took me an hour of rubbing it on the bow to get the bow ready to use. I kid you not, if you want to make sound with the bow and you are using the rosin, it will take you almost an hour to apply the rosin on the string on the bow. Once you do all that, the sound is not bad. I wouldn't say it has character like with a $500 German Roth violin, but for learning, this is not a bad violin for the price. I would recommend to anyone starting out, to have someone who knows how to play a violin to tune it for you, or you might break the strings. I really had to put some work into it to get this violin to play, but I'm pretty happy with it.

I purchased this item because, after playing guitar for a few years, I wanted to make a departure to a new instrument, while still sticking to something with strings. Well, I received it about 6 weeks ago and have been taking lessons for 5, and I gotta say, this violin really does it's job. It was nice to order it, and BAM, ya got everything you need (sans tuner) to start playing. The two bows are nice and have a good feel, but you probably realize they're not the best, but they certainly work. The rosin I received came in a nice little box that keeps it safe and intact. The outfit also comes with a second bridge and strings, which, at this point, I can't really comment on because I've had no use. The pegs of the violin slipped at first, but with a little playing and practice, came to hold tune really well, which surprised me. The fine tuners are really nice as well, being very smooth and make getting it in tune that much easier. The case that keep it all together is very nice as well. it's very sturdy and has nice storage space and a good, smooth zipper. Moving away from the features, the violin was also basically setup, a fact my teacher was quick to point out, and was very impressed with. The only thing that really needed done was tuning. All in all, I think this was an awesome purchase, and should be a great starter instrument for anyone wanting to learn. The only thing that was not quite as the product description described was the color. the violin's body is much lighter, and the chin rest and pegs are a bit darker, bit this is really a good thing, as it makes the violin that much more attractive. If someone is still undecided about whether or not to purchase this, I'd say go for it, it's well worth the $100 that's asked for it.

I thought the Violin was in great condition upon arrival. Being brand new to the violin, I researched rosining the bow, tuning, and learned a bit about using a brand new instrument, lots of good tips online. This one is great for the price, I may upgrade the strings to synthetic after I get in some play time, but the sound is good, the construction is good and the case is great. For the comments about tuning, I had to set my pegs because one wouldn't stay tight. I see no mention of this "setting the pegs" process in any of the "staying in tune" complaints... so who knows if they tried. I was skeptical at first and didn't know if this was a wise decision, but I'm totally satisfied. I'm a gear nerd and do my homework when it comes to new purchases. It may not be a Stradivarius but I don't know the difference anyway. I'm going to get hours of enjoyment out of this new hobby. If you know something about violins, maybe you have a different opinion. But for someone who is brand new to the world of Violins, this will be a great instrument to cut my teeth on. Don't hesitate on this one! I am going to purchase a shoulder rest, as this one doesn't come with. Peace.

I started violin in the 6th grade and played all through high school and then off and on since then (total of maybe 21 years) something like that. I love to play and the family violin I played on (Stradivarius copy) had to be loaned to my cousin to use so I had been without one for about 2 years. I was really missing playing and had a very low budget to purchase one but I did a TON of research. Just to give you a sense of the level of playing I am at I play music like Brandenburg Concerto No 3, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Cappricio Espangnole, my favorite being Bach Double Concerto for 2 Violins. The reason for the background on my experience is because I didn't see may reviews from people that had played for a while, mostly entry level and beginners and I wanted to have some credibility for my review. I would never consider myself professional but I am not a beginner. I have had this violin for about a month now and I couldn't be happier. It is certainly NOT my Stradivarius copy, however it is a really great value for the price. It does come with everything you need and I even like the beginning practice book for my warm ups. Has the Can Can, Simple Gifts and comes with the CDs to play along with. The instrument is beautiful, I will most likely replace the strings because they sound a little tinny mostly on the E string it stands out. Maybe some Dominants will fix that. I waited to do the review to make sure I didn't have any issues and I haven't. The one thing that made me click to purchase was the Fiddlermans review. I actually subscribed to his site before I even knew he did a review on a black Cecilio Violin and he was impressed for the money also. I wanted to get my violin "fix" so to speak for a good price and that's what this is. I hope this helps anyone considering. Of course if you have more money to spend, by all means get a higher quality. But bottom line is if you know how to play, you can make it sound decent.

I just received this and within 5 minutes of tuning it? The D string snapped. I could tell that it had been tightened to hold the bridge down but I think whomever did it just went a bit too extreme and weren't paying attention. Even after shipping and handling, the strings were way too sharp for the bumping they went through. Pro through! It can obviously hold it's tune through some abuse. I had thought this came with an extra set of strings based on the picture but, obviously, it doesn't. So I'll have to be either returning it or I'll have to buy a whole new set of strings. So, a review? First of all, let me preclude this that this violin was not for me, but for my son. I play the cello and the viola, he decided he wanted to play the Violin, thus a nice cheap violin for him to abuse. Sound: The sound (from tuning it) is decent. It's a hundred dollar violin, you are not going to get mind blowing sound from it, but for a beginners violin for a child, the sound is just fine and decent for play. It has a chirpy crisper tone without a many of the deeper undertones that a higher quality violin would give you. This isn't surprising just what you should expect; she's not going to sing clear and bright, but she will chirp crisply. Quality: You pay for what you get with a hundred dollar Violin. The wood is fine, the construction is well done, but the bows are obviously a place where cheap came first to save cost. The Bows will need a bunch of rosin to make them playable at a decent tone. Which bothers me. I think that over time you're going to find the rosin destroying the Violins finish a lot faster than it normally would because these bows will need so much. The Rosin is cheap and friable, spend some money on a higher quality rosin if your not willing to buy a high-quality bow (and you shouldn't, not for this set). A good quality rosin will help in getting the bows up to a better level and save the Violins finish. The chin rest is cheap as well but, again, this is a hundred dollar Violin set, and if you or your child are serious about playing you should probably practice without a chin rest. The case though is the zinger. I would have spent a hundred dollars on just the empty case this violin comes in. Final Thoughts: This violin set is perfect for anyone who is curious to start playing a stringed instrument but are not ready to invest a lot of money. It has a decent tone that will properly reward you when you finally figure out how to bow properly but once you've mastered the basics and determined you do want to be a violinist? You Will want to upgrade to a 4-6 hundred dollar violin. Just make sure to rosin the bow more than you think you should, buy some new rosin, and purchase a complete set of extra strings just in case your's gets wound too tight as well.

This is a cheap violin in every sense of the word... both inexpensive and low quality. That said, I didn't want to spend the money on a violin if it turns out I won't play it any more than I did as a kid. Given its price and my questionable commitment this is a great bargain - I didn't need to spend any more than the price of the violin because it comes with literally everything but the music. It had the case, two bows, rosin, extra strings, extra bridge, metronome/tuner, and shoulder rest. As for what makes it a low quality violin - * The pegs do slip. It is hard to get it to stay tuned (okay, it was hard to tune it in the first place!) * The fine tuner was broken (the pin didn't connect to the tuner for the E string and the pin head broke) * The tuner didn't come with any useful directions. Minimal ones to get to the instrument, but not really helpful from a usefulness perspective. * The sound quality is awful to low end mediocre. I plan to replace the strings since I have to get the fine tuner repaired. As regards other reviews as well as helpful tips - * Some reviews indicate that they needed to install the bridge. Mine came with the bridge installed * The bow will work to pull out sound but you need to tighten it (turn the knob at the end of the bow) and you need a LOT of rosin. I remembered this from playing as a kid though. You do need to get the rosin surface scratched so that it will stick to the bow. And you need a LOT. When you think you've got enough put on that much 2X over. * The shoulder rest probably shouldn't change the sound... but it does (though that may well be just due to the peg slippage as you get the shoulder rest attached) so if you plan to use the shoulder rest make sure it's attached when you tune the violin. My plan is to take this to get the strings replaced, the fine tuner fixed, and the violin tuned. I'll update the post after I get these things done. Keep in mind though that this review, along with all of the other four and five star reviews, is relative to the price. If I'd paid list this would be a one or two star violin. If you're expecting a Stradivarius for this price you should adjust your expectations down several dozen notches - this is to a Stradivarius what the last place t-ball team is to the world champion major league baseball team. For an adult who is not sure of their level of commitment this is an ideal purchase. I wouldn't purchase it for a child who is still learning - there is too much downside. I agree with other posters who say to rent the kids a decent violin. In summary - you get what you pay for but you do get everything you need.
