  • Very effective as claimed, but CVT's are weird I think
Style: Automatic Size: 1 Quart - 6 Pack
I have done several drain and refills in a 2010 Nissan Rogue AWD over the last year. We bought the car in Sept. 2019, and it only had 29,000 miles on it. Since then we are at 35,000 miles so obviously annual mileage is low. I learned it was a wise thing to do to perform a drain and refill, and even at our low miles, I have been having some odd noises, whining when coming to a stop, etc. I also have that CVT wobble feeling in the accelerator and floor boards when starting out at low RPM's and I really feel them on hills starting out. I had no idea CVT's were like this, hard to get used to. Anyway, I first used idemitsu CVT fluid, twice. That was ok, worked well, then recently in early March, as temperatures began to rise in our area, I noticed the return of the wobble sensation, so I decided to try this Castrol CVT Fluid. I am very impressed that it has helped improve the operation of our CVT. It still has some wobble, a little whining when it is warm outside, but less than it did before and the car really does drive a bit smoother and more quieter. So I ordered another 6 pack and plan to do another drain and refill. Last 2 times about 4.5 quarts came out. First time I did it over 5 quarts came out, but I realized it had been overfilled for who knows how long. So when I learned how to get proper levels, (check levels only when car is at normal operating temps and transmission fluid is warm/hot as it expands, and car is in park. It should be as close to the 50% level -halfway mark- on the cross hatch area. No higher according to a Nissan tech I saw on YT), I adjusted accordingly, and my first drain and refill I had to syphon some out which is not fun using a hand pump. Just pay attention to this, get levels as close as you can to the half way mark on the cross hatch area, I always go a bit too high, but best I can do. CVT's are complicated it appears as far as keeping them in good health. They have their oddities, shakes, wobbles when starting out at low RPM's, but I had the computer history checked and no trans. codes were found, so that told me it really is a common thing for older CVT to wobble a bit. So do not worry if you feel the shakes and wobbles at low RPM's, as long as you are not throwing transmission codes to the computer, just drive easy and smart, these are not made to put the peddle to the floor...you will not go far quickly, just gradual pedal and once it starts going into high gear, it should be fine. Castrol has proven at least to me, it does what it promises and I would not go back to any other fluid. Follow up: I did the second drain and refill a little over a week ago with the Castrol Transmax CVT fluid. A little over 4 qt's came out and now that I have a majority of this fluid in it, I am very happy with its smooth operation and minimal wobble at low RPM's. The wobble is common at low RPM's, but this fluid seems to have been a big improvement so far, very smooth and quiet operation overall. ... show more

  • 2015 Nissan Altima Whining Sound is Gone After 1 Drain and Fill!
Style: Automatic Size: 1 Quart - 6 Pack
October 10, 2022 Update: Had put on about 20K miles now since 2nd drain and fill on the 15 Altima CVT. The car stands at close to 120K miles now. The CVT is still smooth without whinny sound during hard acceleration! Most likely will do another 2 CVT drain and fill next year when approaching 35K or 40K miles. Disappointed the inflation caused the price of Castro CVT fluid increased to $10.xx/quart. Last year when I changed the fluid, I got all 6 qts for <$30 through SS! Let’s see if the cost of these fluids would go down by next year…Biden and Putin, they should just battle it out in a cage! Jun. 11 2021 Update: I just finished 2015 Nissan Altima’s 2nd drain and fill with paper cartridge filter replacement. The 2 drain and fills were separated by approx. 1500 miles between them. A good portion of time doing the work was spent removing the CVT paper cartridge filter where putting back the 4 bolts that holds the canister filter housing was difficult. It’s all about using your fingers to feel if the socket is on the bolt since you can’t see it. I had to use a quarter inch socket wrench with a 10mm socket to get fit the opening as 3/8 socket wrench was too big. Since I couldn’t see whether the cartridge housing gasket was properly seated, I tightened the bolts without the cartridge canister seal seated properly which caused an CVT spouting out after filling new Castro CVT fluids. In total, I lost about 1.5 quart on the drive way which made a mess. During the spill when the engine is running, the CVT fluid was just spouting out the canister housing which you can see from the bottom of the engine bay. What a mess!!! It took a long time to clean that up. The lesson is to make sure the metal seal is properly seated before tightened the 4 bolt as it could come off easily without you noticing it! So far, the CVT is now even more quiet compared to after the first Drain and Fill. Will have wait and see more differences in the coming days. ———————————————————— April, 2021 Original Did the first ever CVT fluid drain and fill on my 2015 Nissan Altima at 98K miles. After draining 3.5 quarts then refilling with 4 quarts followed by using overfill draining method to get the fluid to the correct level, I noticed right away, the whining noise is gone during hard acceleration above 3500RPM. I’ll try to do another drain and fill within the next few weeks when another 6 quarts will arrive. Doing the drain and fill twice will replace about 80% of the old fluid. Doing it three times, the new fluid gets to be about 92%. Probably I will also replace the cartridge filter for the CVT oil cooler as many say it’s recommended at 100K miles. The strainer filter could be replaced as well if you don't mind mess with dropping the pan which I personally don’t think it’s as critical as the cartridge filter as it only catches bigger metal pieces. At that stage, your CVT’s life span is dated anyway. Nissan dealer doesn’t change any of the 2 filters as they are saying it’s not required. They still want $280 for a claimed 10 quart CVT fluid drain and fill that you can do yourself for under $70-$80. Doing this myself saved me money! ... show more
