CasioWith the launch of its first watch in November 1974, Casio entered the wristwatch market at a time when the watch industry had just discovered digital technology. As a company with cutting-edge electronic technology developed for pocket calculators, Casio entered this field confident that it could develop timepieces that would lead the market.Today, Casio is focusing its efforts on solar-powered radio-controlled watches: the built-in solar battery eliminates the nuisance of replacing batteries, atomic timekeeping means the users never have to reset the time. Recently, Casio launched a series of Bluetooth watches that sync to the users cell phone to automatically update the time. Casio is always moving time forward.

  • Brand new in box
Bought this as a gift for my husband who gives anesthesia at city hospital. Uses the calculator to figure out drug doses. This arrived on time, brand new. I had problems with the tracking number uploaded by seller. I kept clicking on the USPS number expecting to be directed to USPS website so that I could follow the shipment and it didn’t work. Perhaps an Amazon glitch frustrating? ... show more

  • Awesomely accurate
PS. 2013-12-11. In the last 11 months, the accuracy of this watch has been astonishing. In the first 6 months, it lost about 6 seconds. Then I set it exactly again, and it lost another 5 seconds in the last 5 months. It seems like it loses one second per month in both summer and winter. In other words, it seems like it's pretty much temperature independent. A watch that only has to be adjusted once a year is not something you find much on the market these days. Original review 2013-2-11. This Casio Men's DBC32-1A Data Bank Black Digital Watch is exactly what I wanted, and much more. Heaps of features, many of which I didn't expect. It's really light-weight (33 grams), and very comfortable. I hardly notice that I'm even wearing it. * The LCD screen has good contrast and sharp numerals. * The end of the watch-strap is slightly bulbous (or "bulging"), which ensures that the watch-strap won't easily fall off by itself. This effectively locks the watch-strap. * The user manual is excellent, in English and Spanish. The manual weighs 17 grams, which is good for travel. * It has an amazing gravitometric light which turns on when you hold it up and turn it towards yourself. (This would be really useful for country driving at night, or in a theatre etc.) Page E-41 of the documentation made me think at first that this watch was doing facial recognition, turning on because it saw me looking at it. On page E-42, it explains that it works out that you are looking at it by the angle, using gravity. This auto-illumination feature can be turned off easily to save battery energy. * The day-of-the-week can be shown in 13 European languages: en/pt/es/fr/nl/da/de/it/sv/pl/ro/tr/ru. (The database text can be in the same languages.) * The 12/24 hour display option can be very quickly toggled with the bottom right button. * There's a daylight saving feature which means that you can keep the time as standard time all the time, and just toggle between standard and daylight saving. (This could be particularly useful in parts of the Mid-West USA where I found in the 1980s that each city seemed to have its own independent choice of daylight saving option during summer.) The choice of daylight saving time is indicated at top left of the screen to remind you. * There's a dual time screen, which could be useful if your head office is in a different country. The dual time offset can be any number of minutes, which is handy for places like India and South Australia with weird time zones. I'm going to keep my dual time on UTC permanently. * The year, month and day are always on-screen in the standard time screen. They are clear and in ISO order in the format YYYY MM-DD. That's my preferred order. I like the fact I don't have to push a button to see the full date. * The key-press beeps can be turned off. This is probably the most important feature of any electronic device, the ability to turn off those infernal key-press beeps! I have set mine to "mute", which is indicated in a small square on the screen. Muting does not mute the alarms though, which is fair enough. * The time is really easy to set because of the number keys. That's what I noticed a couple of decades ago when I last had one of these watches. The ability to set the times and alarms with number buttons is a significant convenience. * The display-light can be turned on manually with the top-right button. This can be chosen as a 3-second or 1.5-second duration. The choice is indicated by a tiny box on the screen. This is useful because the manual gives the following battery life-times. ** 10 years with 10 seconds alarm and 1.5 seconds display light per day. ** 8.5 years with 10 seconds alarm and 7.5 seconds display light per day (5 times 1.5 seconds). ** 6.1 years with 10 seconds alarm and 15 seconds display light per day (5 times 3 seconds). * Obviously this means that using the light is a big drain on the battery. So it's best to turn off the automatic light (except when particularly needed), and reduce illumination to 1.5 seconds. * The database function looks useful. However, it takes a while to click through the whole alphabet to get the letters you want. The alphabet is upper case only, but includes numerical digits and punctuation. When you use a non-English language for day-of-week, it offers the full (upper-case) alphabet of the language that you are in. Each of the 25 memories holds an 8-character name and a 15 digit number, which looks like 11 digits for an international phone number plus 4 digits for an extension number. * The 8-digit calculator works fine with the 4 standard operations on the top row of keys. It has one memory, which can be used as a "constant" to add/subtract/multiply/divide variable numbers. This could be useful for exchange rates or unit conversions. They also have an additional exchange rate calculator which stores and multiplies by a single exchange rate. * The stop watch is fairly standard. * There are five independent alarms, the first of which also has a 5-minute snooze (as advertised). There are multiple options for each alarm. 1. Every day at the same time. 2. Only at a specific time on a specific day. 3. Every day at the same time, but only during the specified month! 4. One a month, on a specified day of the month, at the specified time. * It's a bit annoying that there is no way to specify a one-off alarm. After the alarm has gone off, you have to go into the alarm-setting screen, select the alarm and turn it off. However, a good thing is that all active alarms are indicated by number on the standard clock screen so that you know that they are active. * The alarm is so soft, it is just audible when working in front of a computer in a quiet room. So this alarm is of no use when travelling in public transport, for example. But these days, people have mobile phones for that. All in all, it's a quite astonishing little watch. ... show more

  • Would really benifit from a timer.
This watch is pretty decent. It does almost everything I want a watch to do, except let me set timers! It has a stopwatch, so I see no reason why it does not have a timer. A cheap chinese watch I got has the features of this watch And comes with a timer, so I end up wearing both of them. I was looking for a calculator watch that is like this but has the elusive timer, but it appears that Casio has a calculator watch monopoly, and they don't sell timers. :( ... show more

  • Perfect
I'm a huge fan of the Databank series; both because of functionality and aesthetic. I had the CA-53W for awhile, and decided I'd "upgrade". I put the word upgrade in quotes because although this model has a light and a phone book (which I think is really cool!), it drops water resistance from the previous model. I showered with the old watch everyday, even scuba dived in the Grand Cayman Islands (despite the manual saying you shouldn't), and it's perfectly fine to this day, almost a year later. This watch has the look that I like, also a bunch of neat functions, but the loss of water resistance is unfortunate because otherwise I believe it would be perfect. EDIT: 20170614 The individual keys on the pad are a bit harder to push down, surprisingly, than the previous model. They also seem to be a tough sort of plastic, unlike the rubber feel of the CA-53W. For what it is does though, I still believe the product is worth 4 stars. EDIT: 20170619 Over the past week, I've noticed the wristband is a bit squeaky. Also, I've been steadily taking this watch with me in the shower/bath, sometimes fully submerged, and no signs of water damage at all (i.e water under the screen, buttons not working, etc). EDIT: 20171028 My watch is still very much functional/reliable, even with showering everyday with it. It's accrued a couple of scratches on the screen, but nothing too crazy. About a month ago, I went to look at the time and noticed a bunch of jibberish (random characters) on the screen. However, pushing one of the buttons cleared it and that problem hasn't happened again since. As I've used the phone book more, I've come to realize it's ashame the numbers don't double as a keyboard, kind of like a phone, or T9. Again, I use this watch everyday, and will continue to do so until a better Databank model is released. (Hopefully with a light and guaranteed water resistance). EDIT: 20180926 The timepiece is still going strong! I haven't had any "jibberish" issues since the last edit. I shower daily with the watch, even go swimming and go in the steam room/sauna, yet still no problems i.e; all buttons are functional, and light still works. However, I've had to replace both bands due to degradation. The one with the clasp gave out months ago, and the other with the holes actually cracked in half (sorry, I never thought to take pictures) recently. Luckily, Casio sells exact identical bands for really cheap. The reinstallation is a little frustrating at first, but once you get the hang of it, all future installs are a breeze. In my small collection, this watch remains my favorite. In case you're curious where I got my replacement bands, go here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004LGN54W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 EDIT: 20190818 After two years and some change, this piece remains my daily driver. I've taken it off and used another for a total of a month... at most. Yet, it keeps on ticking (pun definitely intended). Even with me going diving again (about 5-10 meters), the watch is entirely functional. Because of that, I have to give the watch 5 stars. There's no reason not to. I do, however, have some additonal notes [read: very small nitpicks] I hope Casio can address in the next iteration: 1. I've replaced the band twice in two years. My first replacement was with the aforementioned official Casio resin band, and the second replacement was with an unofficial Casio band. So, I guess I hope they'll be able to increase the durability of their official band as I much prefer that to the one I currently use. 2. Having to use my finger nails to push the keys in on the keypad, there's permanent grooves [or indents] on them. No big deal though. The "jibberish" issue I had was truly an anomaly, as I haven't experienced since then. So yeah, a phenomenal watch for a phenomenal price. I'm still a huge fan of the series, and eagerly awaiting the next version! Changing headline from "Almost perfect" to "Perfect". ... show more
