The Trapper is a part of the Amber Bone CV Family. Many Case users call on our traditional alloy steel blades to get the job done right while enjoying its ease of re-sharpening. This durable folding knife features a peach seed jigged amber bone handle with two full length blades, the clip and spey blades. The Clip blade is commonly used as a multi-purpose blade and preferred for detail work. The spey blade has a specially curved tip making it a common all-purpose utility blade. The basic trapping and skinning blades and its light weight, it is a must-have knife for those who trap small game. This knife is constructed with our chrome vanadium (CV) steel. Some knife lovers will settle for nothing less than chrome vanadium blades, since this special formula of alloyed steel is the “original” Case blade steel. Case chrome vanadium blades are known for their edge-holding ability and easy re-sharpening. However, they are less resistant to rusting, pitting and discoloration than stainless steel. We recommend keeping a thin film of oil on the blade to maintain the finish. This ensures that your knife will be around for future generations to enjoy. I am a knife nut and have a few Case Russlocks that I use regularly as an everyday carry knife and I enjoy them very much. I am a hunter, fisherman and trapper, so I had always thought about getting the classic Case Trapper. I really have more than enough specialized knives to handle my trapping needs but the Case was always calling to me. I would probably go 4.5 on the rating but since I can't, I will give it a 5. The finish work is impeccable. My two complaints are first, that there is a very small amount of side to side movement in the main blade in the full open position. For the very reasonable $66.99 price paid here I suppose that is to be expected. The spey blade however, is tight. My second complaint is that the cutting edges are visibly sharpened by a sanding belt and the Case Company video provided here on Amazon shows exactly that. The edge is very sharp but is a little ragged and snaggy. If you drag the blade edge across the edge of a piece of paper very lightly, you can feel all of the irregularities. The attached photo was taken after I retouched the blade on an oiled hard Arkansas stone and stropped the blade on leather rubbed with an abrasive compound. I can't get the belt sanding stripes off of the blade but I have got it to a point where I can no longer feel the snaggy irregularities left by the factory belt sander in the blade edge itself. I realize that most customers probably wouldn't notice the issues that I noticed but a knife nut like myself definitely will. As for functionality, I put it to work right away breasting out three Canada Geese I got while hunting yesterday. The main blade worked well to split the skin and I used the spey blade to separate the skin from the breast. The knife felt good in the hand while working. The longer blades on full-sized Trapper were helpful for preparing birds of this size. Lastly, the Amazon product information states that the blade is Chrome Vanadium but it is not. The blade is clearly stamped SS for Case's Tru-Sharp surgical stainless steel. ... show more

The one I received WAS carbon steel. Not CV marked CS . The new designation. Everything looks good. Knife had even grinds on both blades and was sharp o.o.b. Unlike some Case knives I have received it is A-OK in all regards. Happy with purchase.

I ordered this and found it is a fabulous knife, but it is large. Too large for me. Too large to carry in my pocket. I would prefer to carry it in a sheath. I returned it and bought the Case XX 6318 CV, medium Stockman. I'll review that in a separate review.

BEWARE!!!!!!! I was aware that there was a chance that this was NOT a carbon steel or CV model even though it clearly states in the discription that it is. Seems like lately from the reviews that its a toss up what steel you may get. I really wanted the carbon model. Took the chamce for the price, got the stainless steel. I wanted this for a everyday carry, but wanted carbon. Its a beautiful pocket knife. Quality of build is great. Bone is super nice. Blades are almost perfect, if you wanted stainless. Not going to go through all the trouble of returning it. I collect Case knives so I will just keep this in its box and put it in the collection. Very disapointed none the less because I was looking forward to carrying a carbon steel Case Trapper. Will not be ordering from whoever this was again.
