Some knife lovers will settle for nothing less than chrome vanadium blades, since this special formula of alloyed steel is the “original” Case blade steel. Case chrome vanadium blades are known for their edge-holding ability and easy re- sharpening. However, they are less resistant to rusting, pitting and discoloration than stainless steel. We recommend keeping a thin film of oil on the blade to maintain the finish. Gibbs Rule #9: Always carry a knife. I bought one of these decades ago, and it was my favourite pocket knife. One day I decided not to carry it because I never really used it. That day I had an electrical problem with my motorcycle and I needed a knife. (I was able to use a P-38 can opener that's on my keychain -- still, 30 years later -- to strip the wire.) Since then, I always have some sort of blade. I seem to have misplaced my original Case WR XX Slimline Trapper (it's around here somewhere), so I bought a new one. I always put it in my pocket when I go out. I've even used it a couple of times. The blade has a sharp point, which makes it useful for detail work. Having only one blade, it's compact and elegant. The yellow handle is very attractive, and somewhat 'retro'. I have many Victorinox Swiss Army Knives, several of which have been in the pocket rotation (and one lives on a lanyard in my backpack). I had an old trapper when I was a kid. It was my first knife that wasn't a cheapo barlow with plastic handles. I don't really know what happened to it- I can only assume my dad palmed it at some point during the blur that was my teenage years. I really loved that knife right down to the stains on its carbon steel blades. The spey blade on that knife was useful to me in that i didn't sharpen the knife nearly as much as I should have (and I can't have been good at sharpening knives anyway at that age) so I had that 'second' blade, which I practically never used, for tasks that required a more honed edge. That knife was my "rosebud" and so I can't really present an unbiased review of the single blade version for that reason. I just up and decided to buy a new trapper one day, but with only one blade this time, and a sexy looking drop point of a blade at that. Because I grew up, and partly that means that now I can put the devil's grimace on just about any knife edge. Particularly a hi carbon blade. Also, being an adult means not automatically gravitating toward the pocketknife with the most blades.. The slipjoint is nice and tight for the size of the knife. The look, well.. we live in an age of images, so I'll just say the design fits my hand perfectly, and is a nice texan cousin to my stainless laguoile. Both very elegant knives.. The slimline wouldn't be much of a workhorse, the blade being as slim as it is but it's terrific for those tasks becoming to a distinguished gentleman. or a surgeon.. Or really any performer of 'indoor' tasks.. Also, I have to mention that Case is just the best for presenting sharp blades. I remember this being true of my childhood trapper as well but Case blades come sharp! I recently bought two Kershaws and a CRKT and this little champ came sharper than all ! Good quality made the same way for over a 100 years: you can't beat that. ... show more

This was my first Case knife and I'm very pleased with the purchase. What drew me to the knife at first was the traditional look of this folder and that it was very slim and lightweight. I've been carrying it for a couple of days now and it disappears into my pocket and I can't even tell I'm carrying it. Excellent for carrying it everyday. The knife smoothly opens and snaps into place. Once opened, the blade doesn't exhibit any play although, it does snap close pretty easily so I wish that the backspring was a little stronger. Nothing to be alarmed about, as long as you use the knife properly, as intended. The only other minor fault with the knife out of the box was the factory edge. It was ground too much on one side, leaving a nasty wire edge. This wire edge was *very* sharp so use caution as it'll cut you bad if you *foolishly* decide to run your fingers over the blade! I immediately took the edge to my Sharpmaker and cleaned it right up, sharpening each side at a 15 degree angle. I'm really pleased with the easy of sharpening the CV blade and the amazing edge it took. The edge is shaving sharp, much better than my other stainless steel folding knives. Overall, not perfect out of the box, but with a little edge clean up and oil, this knife is going to be my regular carry. Highly recommend it. Very nice to see quality products come out of American manufacturers and it's important to support companies like Case. ... show more

Nice knife. But FYI to future buyers. This is the second case knife I bought from Amazon, and product descriptions were not accurate. Knives were advertised as CV Chrome Vanadium, but I received CS Carbon Steel blades but I received Carbon Steel

    • A beautiful and functional pocket knife
If you know Case knives, you know how well they're made. This beautiful redbone slimline trapper is big enough to do most jobs you would require in a pocket knife yet light, slim and narrow enough to ride well in your pocket, producing no bulge. The chrome vanadium (traditional Case blade steel) is easy to sharpen and will hold a keen edge with just a few strokes on a whetstone or steel. This type of steel must be wiped clean after use or it will rust. Eventually a dark patina will replace the chrome finish on the blade and protect the blade, similar to the blueing on a gun barrel. If you can't be bothered keeping a blade clean, you might be better off with a stainless steel blade. Case offers both stainless and CV on this model. I personally do not like a stainless blade, they're harder to sharpen and the edge is not quite as keen as (carbon steel) chrome vanadium. Best of all, this and all Case knives, are made in Pennsylvania in the good old USA. ... show more
