So I grew up with the small cup and thick paper bug removal method. But as an adult, I’ve discovered how much of a pain that can be. This contraption is even better than I hoped! Just last night, I spotted a good-sized spider on the wall in a weird spot. But this thing worked! I could see clearly that the spider was in the container—a big downside of just using a cup—and I had no trouble setting the spider onto my sidewalk. My recommendation: leave the slide up and the box open after each use, so you can move quickly when you spot something and don’t need to bother sliding it open. ... show more

I got this mainly for roaches that come in during the summer, plus my kid and I just love bugs and observing them (but don't want the roaches in the house). The size of it will hold large roaches well, BUT you have to be super careful when trying to catch them because you can hurt their antennae and appendages as they're moving very quickly trying to get away if you don't place the device down JUST right. And the whole idea behind this is NOT to hurt or kill bugs. Also, the plastic part that slides (that functions like a paper) isn't totally and completely flat on ours, so baby roaches and other very small bugs will just walk underneath it instead of going into the device. So unfortunately, for roaches I'm still doing the ole cup and paper because I know I can get them in there without hurting them. It's still a fun and affordable way to observe some types of bugs and safely catch them, it just all depends. ... show more

The magnifier does make it a little harder to see what the heck you're doing as you try to catch an actual live, fast moving spider. And the trap area is barely large enough to achieve it, especially on a textured surface of any type. I got this to catch insects without harming them so that I could release them outside. It works great for that. Easy to use it one-handed and while reaching high up a wall, etc.... Once an insect is in it there's no way for it to escape-- even a tiny one. Other reviewers who said insects escaped must not have closed it all the way. I only wish it were more durable. It doesn't seem like it would survive a fall off a table without breaking. Since it's designed for kids to use, that aspect should be improved. Maybe some rubber bumpers on the edges?
