  • Missing 5lb Plate
Color: Black, 105 LB, Pair
Contacted support about one of my missing plates and they responded and shipped out a new plate rather quickly. It is a great price for the weight you get. If you don't mind taking some time manually adjusting the weight then these are the perfect budget friendly dumbells A couple things I will mention but does not affect my opnion: Packaging came in messed up but it is somewhat expected giving the weight and I would open these outside or somewhere easy to clean due to the small debris. ... show more

  • In depth look at why I am VERY Happy with my purchase
This is one of the better purchases I have made in a while. I did a lot of research on adjustable dumbbells before I found these. Purely based on price, it was by far the best I found. I would love to have a set of bowflex dumbbells but they are super expensive and its my understanding they have durability concerns with all those moving parts. This product however is simple and sturdy heavy metal construction that I don't see it breaking anytime soon (unlike the cheap flimsy dumbbell handles I have seen being sold separately in Walmart). Also free shipping is huge. I don't know how they are making any money on this. Shipping would cost like 30 bucks on its own for a big 40 lbs package. I did not encounter either of the biggest problems people complained about in other reviews. The carrying case was not shipped by itself. In fact if anything they put too much packaging around the product. It was in a box, inside another box, with a layer of folded supportive cardboard between the two boxes. So NO CASE DAMAGE. I guess they listened to all the complaints. I also did not find a funny SMELL in either of the sets I bought. One thing that is a bit misleading is the 40 lbs that they advertise. It most certainly isn't 40 lbs per dumbbell, but is also a stretch to call it 20 lbs per dumbbell. You receive 30 lbs worth of weight plates (4 5s and 4 2.5s) and the handle weight 2.5 lbs tops. So the product is at the very least 5 lbs light. Maybe with all of the packaging and case the item ships at 40 lbs. So with the weight equally spread between both dumbbells you will have about 17 lbs in each hand according to my scale. If you put all the weight on one dumbbell you will have about 32 lbs in one hand. Unless you are just getting started with weight training, this is not going to be enough weight for you! But the handles are built strong enough that you can buy additional weight plates at Walmart/Target. Just make sure you get plates with the 1 inch holes in the middle, not the 2 inch holes you traditionally see in gyms on barbells. I have seen online references to people putting as much as 65 lbs on one dumbbell without problem so it should be strong enough for most people. The only thing that prevents you from adding more weight is the length of the handle. You can really only comfortably fit 3-4 plates on each side of a dumbbell and still have enough space to safely (in my opinion) put the screw on. So if you want to be able to go heavier, get some 10 lbs plates (about 8 dollars at Walmart). If you just use 5s you can only go up to about 40 (4 5s on each side of a dumbbell). While im on the subject of the length of the bar, I think it is perfect. If the bar was any longer you would be able to add more weight, but it would be too wide to do a lot of exercises. These dumbbells fell very similar to what they have in most gyms. Another reason to buy some extra plates is that slipping on 1 10 is a lot quicker than slipping on 4 2.5s. The swap when changing weights does take a little bit of time, but it isn't too bad. My other suggestion that solves this and the weight problem is just buy two of these sets like I did. It is still a lot cheaper than the alternatives. And buying this as a set is cheaper than buying the weight plates separately that come in the set, and you get the bonus of a second set of handles. Now you can have 4 dumbbells set to different weights to cut down on change over time. If you are a big guy like me though this still may not be enough weight for you. I plan on buying 4 10 lbs plates soon, but even then this option would come out to much less than half of the cheapest Bowflex dumbbells. Then I will have enough weight to go pretty heavy on all 4 dumbbells and be able to have two different weights going at once with no change over time in between. The grip of the handles do irritate my hands a bit after a long work out. The metal grip is a little rough, but I have this problem with some equipment in regular gyms I frequent so many may not even notice it especially if you stick to lighter weights. You can solve this problem with just wrapping some athletic tape around the handle or wearing workout gloves. The only other complaint is the little rubber stopper on the "screws." Others have posted that they aren't really necessary so this probably isn't a big deal, but they do often fall out of their recess in the screw when there are separate from the handle part. ... show more

  • Good for the price point.
Got them on sale. $200 bucks for 200lbs is the cheapest you're going to find. Handles feel strong enough and the knurling is a bit tougher than I was expecting, which is a good thing. Cheaper sets tend to have smoother knurling but these have a good grip. Knocking a star off for the plates. Paint/coating was chipping out of the boxes and pretty shotty. plates themselves came with some rough/sharp spots. Expect a few cuts and paint splinters til they get fully broken in. But, again, you get what you pay for and these are good for the price point. Just remember, they are 1 inch plates, so they won't fit a normal barbell if you're looking for that too. ... show more

  • Don't listen to the negative reviews...
This is a long review, I hope I can keep your attention. First off, I want to tell you guys that Fedex Smartpost is the carrier for this item. I didn't have a problem with them, even though they delivered my dumbbells 2 days after the delivery estimate(can't complain, free shipping). Fedex Smartpost sends to the closest USPS, then USPS takes an additional 2 days to deliver. It seems like most people hate Fedex Smartpost because they take longer than usual("google fedex smartpost sucks" to see what I'm talking about). I ordered these on 2-9-13 and they arrived at my doorstep on 2-16-13, so one week exactly, average time for free shipping. The dumbbells came packaged professionally and my case came in perfect condition, which I was very pleased about. I also ordered 60 pound db set from Lion Roar Fitness on 2-8-13, and as of 2-16, they didn't even start shipping so I ended up cancelling that order. They charged $20 for shipping too... I will NEVER even consider buying from LRF again. Just wanted to warn you guys about that. $20 for shipping AND they lag it? No thank you. These Dumbbell sets are a great investment, and I know they will last a long time. First of all, there is no toxic chemical smell the negative reviewers mentioned. Not even the case it came with. They clearly have gotten better with quality control. I read ALL of the negative reviews and took a chance with these, and I am glad I did. My bars are all nicely polished, smooth, and the weights and collars fit accordingly. There are 4 pieces of rubber stoppers that help keep these weights in place, 2 in the middle of the bar and 2 that are connected to the collars, which does an excellent job. When you lift weights, you should never "jerk" through your workouts, but instead keep good form with nice controlled movements. That's how my workouts are, and the weights have not moved, rolled, clanked, at all. The only time the collars roll out, is when I twist them to change weights. I even put all the plates on one bar(30 lbs) and the weights/collars were still in place. People say these are not the best quality, but what more do you expect from a set of dumbbells? Good finish on the plates with a clean tough metal bar, which cannot rip as some rubber grip bars tend to rip after tightening the collars too much. Carefully put the plates on, or you could scratch/chip off the paint. If you don't like getting callouses on your hands, I recommend investing in gloves. I don't feel a thing with gloves on and can enjoy lifting weights without getting blisters. If you have Fat Gripz(check my review for Fat Gripz), you don't even need gloves. Those rubber suckers will cover it, and give you a much better workout. I will buy additional plates for these soon but before you guys do as well, try adding Fat Gripz to the bars with your normal workouts. It will give your workouts more of a challenge, and you will see some good results in your forearm strength. I wish I knew about them when I wrestled in high school.. Long story short, don't listen to the negative reviews. Keep yourself in shape and buy these already! Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the bars + collars does not equal 5 pounds(unless you are weighing both bars and 4 collars together). So you get about 17.5 pounds each dumbbell. The description states that they weigh 5 pounds but it's half. The case it comes with is about 5 or 6 pounds so that's where they kind of trick you. So if you do the math, 4 x 5lbs plate + 4 x 2.5 lbs plate + 2 x 2.5 collars & bar = 35 lbs + 5 lbs case = 40 lbs db set.. I'm not going to knock off a star for that because I bought these knowing this information. We can always buy more plates, so no big deal. Thank you for reading my long review. I hope this helped make your decision in building a better body! Train hard, train safe, and good luck :) ... show more
