  • In depth look at why I am VERY Happy with my purchase
Color: Black, 40 LB w/Case, Pair
This is one of the better purchases I have made in a while. I did a lot of research on adjustable dumbbells before I found these. Purely based on price, it was by far the best I found. I would love to have a set of bowflex dumbbells but they are super expensive and its my understanding they have durability concerns with all those moving parts. This product however is simple and sturdy heavy metal construction that I don't see it breaking anytime soon (unlike the cheap flimsy dumbbell handles I have seen being sold separately in Walmart). Also free shipping is huge. I don't know how they are making any money on this. Shipping would cost like 30 bucks on its own for a big 40 lbs package. I did not encounter either of the biggest problems people complained about in other reviews. The carrying case was not shipped by itself. In fact if anything they put too much packaging around the product. It was in a box, inside another box, with a layer of folded supportive cardboard between the two boxes. So NO CASE DAMAGE. I guess they listened to all the complaints. I also did not find a funny SMELL in either of the sets I bought. One thing that is a bit misleading is the 40 lbs that they advertise. It most certainly isn't 40 lbs per dumbbell, but is also a stretch to call it 20 lbs per dumbbell. You receive 30 lbs worth of weight plates (4 5s and 4 2.5s) and the handle weight 2.5 lbs tops. So the product is at the very least 5 lbs light. Maybe with all of the packaging and case the item ships at 40 lbs. So with the weight equally spread between both dumbbells you will have about 17 lbs in each hand according to my scale. If you put all the weight on one dumbbell you will have about 32 lbs in one hand. Unless you are just getting started with weight training, this is not going to be enough weight for you! But the handles are built strong enough that you can buy additional weight plates at Walmart/Target. Just make sure you get plates with the 1 inch holes in the middle, not the 2 inch holes you traditionally see in gyms on barbells. I have seen online references to people putting as much as 65 lbs on one dumbbell without problem so it should be strong enough for most people. The only thing that prevents you from adding more weight is the length of the handle. You can really only comfortably fit 3-4 plates on each side of a dumbbell and still have enough space to safely (in my opinion) put the screw on. So if you want to be able to go heavier, get some 10 lbs plates (about 8 dollars at Walmart). If you just use 5s you can only go up to about 40 (4 5s on each side of a dumbbell). While im on the subject of the length of the bar, I think it is perfect. If the bar was any longer you would be able to add more weight, but it would be too wide to do a lot of exercises. These dumbbells fell very similar to what they have in most gyms. Another reason to buy some extra plates is that slipping on 1 10 is a lot quicker than slipping on 4 2.5s. The swap when changing weights does take a little bit of time, but it isn't too bad. My other suggestion that solves this and the weight problem is just buy two of these sets like I did. It is still a lot cheaper than the alternatives. And buying this as a set is cheaper than buying the weight plates separately that come in the set, and you get the bonus of a second set of handles. Now you can have 4 dumbbells set to different weights to cut down on change over time. If you are a big guy like me though this still may not be enough weight for you. I plan on buying 4 10 lbs plates soon, but even then this option would come out to much less than half of the cheapest Bowflex dumbbells. Then I will have enough weight to go pretty heavy on all 4 dumbbells and be able to have two different weights going at once with no change over time in between. The grip of the handles do irritate my hands a bit after a long work out. The metal grip is a little rough, but I have this problem with some equipment in regular gyms I frequent so many may not even notice it especially if you stick to lighter weights. You can solve this problem with just wrapping some athletic tape around the handle or wearing workout gloves. The only other complaint is the little rubber stopper on the "screws." Others have posted that they aren't really necessary so this probably isn't a big deal, but they do often fall out of their recess in the screw when there are separate from the handle part. ... show more

  • Odd size. Good product.
Color: Black, 52.5 LB, Single
They have an abnormal 1 and 1/8 in bar size which limits you to buying the same dumbbell to get more plates, hence the 4 star. I've put a lot of work in with these and can say that they hold up well. They are just weights after all. I bought the 52.5 set of two because of their pricing.

  • Great set! A Case that lasts 15+ years and counting!
Color: Black, 40 LB w/Case, Pair
15yrs ago purchased 2 sets of these. The case has better latches than the Amazon set which will not last, per many reviewers. The latches on these cases are so well designed that they lasted 15years and still keep the case closed! Good buy if you want a case that lasts!!!

  • Best deal on weights I’ve seen
Color: Black, 105 LB, Pair
First thoughts. A lot of negative reviews talking about a smell. First of all these are for getting SWOLE not for placing in a bag to use as potpourri!!! Wusscakes! Actually mine had zero smell whatsoever!!!! I put all weights on scale and everything came out right on! No little pieces of metal broken off like you hear. Everything is perfect honestly. The plates stay tight throughout the entire lift. I’ll update later but doubt anything will change. ... show more

  • Splintering paint cuts hand
Color: Black, 105 LB, Pair
Good price-to-weight value. Very mangled packaging but was intact in 2 separate boxes. I dont mind the cosmetic defects but they are splintering off and rubbing my hands on it the wrong way cut me a few times already.

  • One of the best deals I’ve ever found on Amazon
Color: Black, 52.5 LB, Single
This 52.5 lb single dumbbell setup is without a doubt one of the best deals I’ve ever found on Amazon. While most iron free-weights sell for around $2/pound (as of the fall of 2022), this set is much more affordable, The price for it does seem to vary wildly day by day. I paid $77 in October 2022 and see that a month later, it is selling for $65. But I’m not complaining since it’s a steal at either price. I bought 2 sets so I’d have a pair of dumbbells. The dumbbell bars and threaded, star-shaped end nuts are nicely made. The chrome coating seems thick and durable. And because the threaded nuts have black rubber washers on the side that makes contact with the weight plates, they tighten securely and stay firmly in place when in use. Other sets I’ve used did not have the rubber washer and as a result, would loosen up while doing reps. That’s both annoying and dangerous The rubber washers do tend to fall off when removing the nuts from the dumbbell, but that is easily rectified by putting a few drops of superglue in the groove in the nut into which the rubber washer sits. The weight plates themselves are a little less precisely made. For instance, I weighed my 5 lb plates on a postal scale and discovered they range anywhere from 4.75 lbs to 5.25 lbs. That’s not a big deal most of the time but you can definitely notice an imbalance if you inadvertently end up with 8 of the heavier 5 lb plates on one hand and 8 of the lighter plates on the other. To avoid that from happening, I used a silver Sharpie to mark the plate that are over 5 lbs and keep them in a separate pile so I can distribute the weight more evenly into the bars. Also, while the clear-coat on the plates seems heavy duty enough, you do need to check for rough edges. That goes for the dumbbell bars too. I had to file down a couple of spots to avoid getting metal splinters in my hands. Last but not least, the dumbbells I received have a diameter of 1.18 inches (or 30mm) and the weight plates have holes that size. This means any plates you may already have with 1 inch (25mm) holes will not fit onto these bars. Likewise, while the plates from this set will easily go onto a 1 inch bar, they can flop around a bit. In practice the latter is not a problem as long as you can tighten down the bar-end clamps. I use my 30mm plates on a 25mm curl bar without issue. In short, while there may be some compromises involved, at these prices, this dumbbell set is one of the best deals out there. Follow up note written on April 11, 2023: I’ve been using my weight set several times a week for about 6 months now and all parts are holding up great! ... show more
