Update: Canvia has a new app. The one advantage lower res cheaper frames had was an app and a remote. There is now an app that simplifies use of the frame. Now it’s a gift that includes an easy interface and won’t be a burden to learn for recipients. Below is the original review: Canvia Frame I purchased this frame 4 years ago and I’m probably going to buy another for a family member. I very much appreciate this frame. The resolution is impressive and it’s an attractive frame. Art Catalog The art catalog is diverse with more choice than I can possibly wade through. The frame came with a one year subscription to a deeper database of hi res art but it is not at all necessary to fully enjoy the frame. Even without the annual subscription you can spend as little or as much time as you want setting playlists, customizing lists, adding your own art and photos, or just choose a curated show with a couple of clicks. Adding pictures is as easy as choosing a file. I’d like to see a drag and drop interface that could create playlists like an iphone can “save to album” or move images as easily as moving slides around in a PowerPoint. A nice option is the art information display that can be turned on and off from the app. This displays a little translucent box in the lower corner of the frame with artist, title, date, location nd more. I appreciate the information and I’ve become familiar with many previously unknown to me. Playlists I often let playlists run but the hi res frame is excellent for art study and I often display a single piece. Obviously the flat screen cannot convey important aspects of, for instance, the thick layered paint of Starry Night, but it certainly suggests the idea of depth. The frame does become a conversation piece whether exhibiting a single piece or running a playlist. I keep multiple lists of pictures for various groups of friends, family, and others. When company comes I can run a list of relevant photographs. Installation We kept the frame on the wall with the power cord coming down to an outlet. We eventually had an electrician put an outlet in the wall behind the frame. It was a bit of an investment, but it was great. There are other fixes that don’t require an electrician and may just need a hole in the wall with the cord snaking down to an existing outlet. Upon reflection, that would have been easy and free. The frame has a light sensor so the screen blanks in the dark. The sensor is sensitive so a nearby night light is enough to wake the frame. Customer Service The frame setup directions were fine. I did need to contact customer service a couple of times in the 4 years I’ve had the frame. Communication was always great and the issues I was having probably could have been resolved by more carefully checking the extensive help section of the website. *below is the original review Website and App The frame requires an account on the Canvia site and an app on your computer or phone. The help pages on the website are extensive and I would love a YouTube channel to complement each section of the help pages. I think a YouTube channel accompanying the FAQ would go a long way to providing me with a visual tutorial I can return to at a future time and audio-visually remind myself of the steps I went through as I will inevitably forget. They’re not too complicated but I think the app and website could be more intuitive for the end user. Ideally the website functionality and the app functionality could be merged so either could be used as a standalone full service front end for the software side. Conclusion I’d buy it again. It has become a much appreciated and attractive addition. I think the matting and frame itself is attractive and has adequate styling for any room. I most appreciate the communication with customer service and the support received for any issue.

May I have found the photographer's Holy Grail? Quite possibly. But first, I need to do some definition of may the Photographer's Holy Grail. One of the more common and slightly irksome question shared among photographers and asked to them is, 'So, what do you do with your photographs?' Today, everyone is a digital photographer if he or she has a smartphone or better camera. The images may or may not be improved in post processing but readily shared and forgotten over the Internet, albeit there are may photo share sites. But in the home, older surviving images continue to dominate among the displayed. My Holy Grail is discovering the newest iteration of electric photo frames that have moved way beyond their predecessors. During the past couple of weeks, I have played around with a very large (16" x 27" display) Canvia Smart Digital Art Frame - 16 GB Artwork Canvas) . So, how good is this expensive display? I leave the assessment with my most skeptical critic of 'my toys,' my wife. She absolutely loves it. Why? Rather than looking like a wall-mounted giant iPad, the images look like they have been printed and the illumination adjusts with ambient lighting levels. I can chose the rotation speed from seconds to days, but I prefer about 10 seconds. The image quality is very good. And my wife is even starting to reassess that maybe, just maybe, she married a skilled photographer. (Holy shutters, Batman!) In fact, we are thinking of buying a second Canvia Smart Digital Art Frame. We are just waiting to see if the rumor that they are developing a yet larger model and to consider if we with to pay the price. (It helps that the frame can handle 100v~240v, nice for those living outside of the US!) Having made the above rave review, this product is still very much a work in progress in terms of product marketing and software development. Apparently, the original notion was to allow buyers to upload free museum-quality works of art from a huge online inventory and display the same with the screen. Perhaps as a secondary thought, the developers realized that people may wish to put their own images into the frames as well. As a result, struggling with the software of this Wi-Fi device can be a bit exasperating among its three competing/complimenting platforms: smartphone, Internet website and desktop application. Which does what, or replicates, can be mystifying and other times its not clear if any of the options offer a solution for a need. The Help Desk is very responsive and very positive, however. But I often received received solutions, complete with screen shots from what looks like from older versions of the software. Also, the Help is not not as knowledgeable as one's first impression. But I don't blame the person on the other end of the email and phone conversations. The software, while ultimately it works well, is a mess in structure. It really needs to be rewritten for the purpose of general clean up and reorganization. For the photographer in mind, a separate software solution should be offered with a photographer's needed features, such as managing downloaded images and temporarily holding an image upon viewing before resuming auto rotation. For the user who wishes to display download art from the company's inventory, a very clean interface needs to be offered. Technically, I don't believe reworking this software is likely to be a huge task. But my impression is that this small company has created a number one rated product "tiger" and the staff is doing its best to hang on to the tiger's tail. I look forward to when the Canvia staff can fully ride that tiger! Overall, inspite of the above concerns, I strongly endorse this product.

I was skeptical about Canvia and purchased it on Amazon for trial. To my surprise, it looks like a hidden gem and my experience was much better than many reviews I saw before the purchase. 1. Hardware quality is obvious. Maple hard wood and image quality both are really good. It was not clear how technology works or what it does, but art or even normal images look better than anything I have seen on screen. 2. For me, zoom feature was very helpful. Some of the artworks I was displaying had very complex and minute drawings, so setting those artworks under one playlist and using zoom feature allowed me to display those zoomed is very helpful. I am glad, I found this feature as it also solved some aspect ratio issues and allowed me to select the right area of the images that should be on the screen. 3. One year free premium art subscription looked generous as my other devices in this category Samsung TV or Meural both offer very few artworks free and subscription is required rightaway. Even without a subscription, there are plenty of artworks that are free. A lot of current artist artworks are there, for me some are high quality, others may be normal but there are plenty of artworks to try from current artists works. The collection from old masters looks good, but can improve further. One can see the details fo art on the screen if you want to know the details such as artist name, year , source etc. this feature makes the display of art more comprehensive. 4. To me managing the artworks in the guest room from my office room while working is very helpful. I can change , next/prev or display new artworks, all while I am away from the Canvia frame has been helpful. I think it can be managed remotely even if you are not in the same house but its a cool feature. 5. It has some features such as google photos or NFT displays that I did not tried. I did try some personal photos and those worked great when packaged in the playlist. Mobile app should have more features and this is one area that looked weak for Canvia. For me, it was fine as I went through all the documents and used a website for all my needs. I will keep trying my Canvia and hope it keeps surprising me.

App is terrible. Setup is terrible. Cropping photos to fit the entire screen makes the app non responsive and never worked for me. I could only add personal photos if I did not crop photos. The art available may or may not fit the entire screen. App crashed on me countless times. In the end this frame is not worth the price nor the trouble. There are better options out there that works as advertised. I mean, this thing is the same price as a 32" Samsung frame TV which displays art and TV. I returned all three of these that I purchased and went in a different direction. Bummer.

This should be considered an early review since I have not been able to get to the advanced features yet. I intended to use them in part for medical graphics but (not the fault of Canvia) the formatting was not correct and I have not had time to work on it. The good: 1) Beautiful frame. 2) Good picture quality with minor caveats. 3) It has VESA mounts in back as well as the picture hooks to mount on. 4) The art that comes with the system is simply wonderful. The bad (divided into two sections) A) hardware 1) The light sensor used to adjust picture settings will make markedly different decisions if the frame is changed from landscape to portrait in the same location. This makes a huge differences and may require you to manually set all of the picture settings, particularly if you plan on being able to switch the frame from portrait to landscape at any point. Of course if you do this, the frame can no longer adjust itself to different lighting settings -- but depending on where the lights are placed the automatic settings were only going to be decent in one orientation if on automatic anyway. 2) Resetting or adjusting anything manually requires removing frame from wall with buttons and switches being difficult to reach, particularly since it needs to stay plugged in while you are doing it and because of the horrible software interface you will have to deal with it often. 3) If you want to hide the plug, the plug is too thick to fit a standard recessed outlet. You can either use a wall plug and have the chord showing going to the frame or have it custom wired with a hole punched through the wall for the pictures DC power plug so nothing else will ever be able to use the space without rewiring. 4) One of the three frames I purchased Just turns itself off most of the time. The only way to turn it back on is to remove it from the wall, unplug it from the wall and plug it back in again. 5) The hardware is apparently unable to tell if the frame is in portrait or landscape orientation. See software section for confounding related problem. B) Software 1) Network: the frame requires a completely unprotected network. I could not use the network at my office and would not have been able to use my homes network for the computers. I have three set up at my office and ended up using two cell phones with a mobile hot spot on one of them to set up the frames. I eventually dedicated a personal laptop with a mobile hotspot for the frames network. While not unmanageable, this is an ongoing headache. 2) the software to manage the frames is horrible. The three frames are literally the only things on the network other than the laptop running the management software and most of the time the software can only find 1 or 2 of the frames even though I can literally see all 3 frames on the network since they are connected to the hotspot. 3) Even changing simple settings is erratic as to it working. I frequently end up going and physically looking at the frame, seeing it is not doing it, going back to the computer and setting it again several times before it works. 4) One of the software settings is orientation. for some reason the frame can not tell its orientation. You can tell the frame its orientation but that DOES NOT alter the art work sent to it. The art work know what orientation it needs and the frame knows what its orientation is after you tell it but unless you manually go out and kull out all of the art work of the wrong orientation it will try to display it. Of course if you change the frames orientation then you have to go to the software, change the orientation there and delete all of the art work, and download new art work and kull out any art with the wrong orientation. 5) With the PC software, if it actually worked and was consistent, it would make for bare bones functionality; Less than a really acceptable functionality but at least a framework that could be built upon. Combined with the web interface the two could probably meet the barely acceptable level of function for most people who want more than a set it up once and never touch it again device. 6) if there is a way to jump to a particular image, pause the slide show, advance to the next image or control anything from the frame I have not figured it out. If there is a simple way to control anything using a phone, Bluetooth or even a phone logged into the insecure network the frames use I have not figured it out.

I made the decision to purchase a Canvia frame for our house after much research. I looked at the Frame tv and other forms of digital frames and art. For me Canvia seemed like the right choice. Though the price seemed significant at the time for what was promised I knew if it was true I would thoroughly enjoy their product and subscription service. Everything I am saying is from my experience with their product and is based on my experience. Living in the Great City of Cleveland, Ohio…. A gorgeous city on an Great Lake we have access to amazing museums one of our greatest being The Cleveland Museum of Art. Due to endowments from past Clevelanders it is free for all. Wonderful works of art and sculptures are found in this museum. From Van Goghs to Monets. From Rembrandts to Picasso. All are able to see the art and the brush strokes and the use of pallet knives or chisels in a sculpture of marble… All of these intricacies, one would think would not be visible on a digital frame device like Canvia. I was amazed at the detail and color spectrum that the engineers and artists at Canvia were able to design and build into the product. As you move or as light changes the device accommodates and adjusts. The strokes of the brush by the Masters are visible The Canvia offers so much more. I belong to their subscription service and get access to all sorts of great art and collections that I can play on my Canvia Frame. I can set the timing of each picture for short amount of times such as minutes….or for even days or hours. If I want to have VAN GOGH’S STARRY STARRY NIGHT on my frame for several days I can do that. Pictures of great sculptures are also worthwhile to show on the Canvia. One of my hobbies is photography and birding. So I take many pictures of birds, dragonfly’s, bees, flowers, landscapes and every so often I get a truly beautiful picture that I am proud of and which I am able to upload to my Canvia. The Cleveland Cavalier Professional Basketball Company won the Championship of the WOOOOORLD in 2016. One of my most treasured picture is of my late dog Fred, grey in the muzzle, wearing the championship hat with a bemused look on his face. Uploaded to my Canvia and when I least expect it …..There is Fred. On another morning it might be the lily pads of Monet or a piece of abstract art that caught my fancy and perplexes my son. The ART that I am able to expose my family to on a daily basis, almost subliminally is amazing. I believe my son has a great appreciation for ART, in large part due to The Cleveland Museum of Art and the Canvia. Art is something that is a necessity in a civilized society. It is not a luxury. We need to express ourselves in music, poetry, art, and dance. This is a product that brings some of the greatest parts of civilization into your home. I will end with the service I have received from the Canvia staff and support structure. I have mentioned the quality of the build of the Canvia Frame. It is a significant piece of equipment and the cost reflects that. It is hooked up to your homes internet and can be controlled via your computer, phone, or I pad. I have the Canvia App on my Android phone as well as my IPAD. Both can control the Canvia’s brightness, time spent on each picture, allows me to upload pictures. And allows for fine tuning such as turning it off at night or keeping it actively showing art…. A beautiful night light. The frame on my Canvia is made of wood. I would think it is maple or oak. The wall attachment is significant and needs to be screwed into a stud as the Canvia Frame has a significant weight…. It is not like a traditional canvas painting in weight. However where a traditional canvas painting is nice….it is a stagnant work of art..Canvia gives you art from around the world in the most dynamic and beautiful ways. When there has been a internet connection issue, subscription question, or technical issue, the Canvia support staff and engineers that I have dealt with have been incredibly responsive, getting back to me same day via email until my question or issue is resolved. I have been floored by the response of the support staff at Canvia, and to be honest that is why I am writing this review. I do not write many reviews. The product has to be exemplary in various areas for me to get the gumption to write such a review. Might it be difficult for a Luddite like me to navigate all the digital and network issues to get it up and running….Yes but the staff and available videos will make it less stressful and very much well worth the challenge. My experience with Canvia and my enjoyment of the product has initiated this review. The Canvia has added so much to our house decor as propagating a greater appreciation for the World’s art. I would suggest considering this product, as my five star rating suggests. David

The Canvia is such a beautifully crafted object that it really pains me to return it, but it just doesn't work for me, and that's a shame. Materials and build quality are excellent and the display really is beautiful, holding up well in various lighting conditions. Unfortunately, the issues we had were sufficiently annoying that we eventually bought a Netgear Meural to replace it, and while it doesn't have every feature the Canvia does, it's nearly as nicely crafted, has some great extra features of its own, and everything it does works pretty much as you'd expect. Would that Canvia's software worked so well. [Before I go on (and oh how I will), a point of clarification - this is a non-Apple household, so all comments here are with respect to Web/Windows/Android. Some of these observations will likely continue to be relevant in the Appleverse, but YMMV when it comes to details.] Canvia's control functionality is scattered almost randomly across 3 different applications (web, smartphone app, Windows program), and to get all the functionality you can't ignore any of them. There are limitations that are just weird - if you try to load a playlist with more than a few dozen items, it takes an insanely long time (I canceled one 104-item transfer after around 45 minutes), so you're obliged to break up larger playlists into smaller ones so that the same total number of images can load into the frame much faster. Often while setting things up we found ourselves forced to switch between phone and web browser to complete the task. The whole process can be a bit glitchy, but in general most operations worked after some lag time or a retry (i.e., I don't recall "crashing" the frame and rebooting much). The Windows application is generally less important, but it does have some time-saving "bulk select" features that are frustratingly absent from the web app. I'm not going to rail on about every little thing here, but suffice it to say that the folks who signed off on the software were a lot less meticulous (or perhaps more overwhelmed) than the folks working on getting the hardware and cabinetry right (and again, those really are top notch). If you think you'll probably get the Canvia loaded with a stable collection and not fiddle with it a lot, this might matter less. Still, meriting special mention are two Canvia features distinguishing it from Netgear's Meural that are so dysfunctional that they cease to be advantages - the "Auto" image adjustment that's supposed to finely tune the displayed image to match the appearance of a canvas in current ambient lighting conditions, and the "pinch to zoom" function that lets you crop artworks in real time while displayed in the frame. Considering how big a deal Canvia makes of these features, it's amazing they've released them in this state. Regarding Auto-adjusting for ambient lighting, just forget it - it's completely broken, skewing color palettes wildly in response to only slight changes to the room's brightness and color spectrum. It seemed to toggle between an unnaturally green-gold tone and a completely surreal blue-green. It's awful, and is in fact so bad that Canvia just tells you to turn it off in the documentation, instead explaining the correct manual settings for specific lighting conditions and time of day. Excuse me? I'm supposed to open my phone app and manually re-tune my digital canvas image 3 times a day if I want it to look right? Obviously we ignored this and picked settings that looked pretty good most of the time, and even with Auto turned off the Canvia did at least adjust to brightness levels and could turn off the screen when the room was dark, a lot better resulting than letting Auto mode take the color palette into psychosis. Overall, for Canvia to promote this feature as a competitive advantage is a tasteless joke. I hope for their sake that this is addressed in a future software update. The zoom feature is a different beast - it sort of works much of the time, but for many pictures its flaws make it unusable, and for all images it's a lot more tedious than it should be. If you notice an image doesn't quite fill the frame as you'd like, you might expect from Canvia's promotional material that you can just take out your phone and adjust whatever's currently being displayed. Nope. Instead, you need to figure out what playlist is being shown, then locate the image of interest in that playlist, and THEN you can bring it up on your phone and zoom/crop it (in fairness, an advantage of this approach is that your changes are saved in the playlist whenever you bring it back) - and yes, when you do, you really can see it happening right on the frame's display (and you'll need to, since you only see part of the image on the phone). The more serious problem is that if you crop too close to the top of the picture (not the bottom, oddly enough) Canvia jumps all the way to the edge with no fine adjustment. In pictures where the composition would otherwise allow you to trim a little sky or treetops in order to save some details on the bottom, but cutting too much off the top is less desirable, Canvia's cropping behavior is just maddening. Our last set of issues were more a matter of taste, but also potentially more consequential, in that we found Canvia content less to our liking than Meural's. This is partly because Meural is more flexible in how you can put content onto the display, and partly how they've curated the content of their subscription services. First, the Canvia is just less useful than Meural without their subscription service. It does integrate a bit better with your Google Photos account, but if you have collected or created other digital artwork that you'd like to display, you'll have to load it into Google Photos or upload it to the Canvia cloud; by contrast, Meural allows you to transfer content directly from your phone or via memory card (a warning on Meural - the memory card feature is great, but the process is more technical than I think most people would prefer). Second, Canvia's subscription content is more limited and seems to have more of a "fine art" orientation than Meural's collection. Again, tastes will differ, but the more yours skew to calendar art and pop poster imagery, the less entertaining you'll find Canvia's selections. For our purposes, Netgear's Meural is far superior, but I didn't' want to just say "Canvia's bad, get a Meural", because comparisons I've read have been too vague about Canvia's disadvantages. I think it's a nice piece of hardware that's disadvantaged by half-baked software that's going to need some major attention if Canvia expects to survive. I wish them well, and if these issues really get addressed, I would consider a Canvia. They need to act quickly though - unfortunately for them, once you have a Meural and are looking to install a display elsewhere (Meural even offers a little desktop model), it's so much easier to manage your displays through a single app that adding a Canvia would be a pretty tough sell.

I have had my Canvia hanging in my studio for almost three years, and it is the centerpiece of my studio. I have read many reviews and do not have any of the problems other users have mentioned. I attribute this to the use case. The use case is essential. I only use it for one thing - to display my photography in landscape mode. The Apple mobile app is more than sufficient for this use case. My workflow is pretty simple - I edit my photo in Lightroom and crop one social media version and one 16:9 version for Canvia. I export it to my phone and drop it into the app. Done. I have only one playlist - "My Best Landscapes," and I keep adding photos. The only other settings I use are auto-brightness, and turn on at XX time, and turn off at xx time. So, for that use case, it is brilliant. I have so many amazing images, and having to professionally print all of them and then try to hang them in my studio (all red brick) is too daunting to take on. The Canvia allows me to display images I would never be able to see unless they were rotating on the device. I am considering buying another one to hang vertically to display portrait cropped images (the ones I post on IG (@Jcasap) The bottom line is that the images are crisp and clean. They look lifelike (as if I printed them), and for my type of photography, which is night and Milkyway photos, the backlight brings the image to life, as if you are standing there. I can't speak about the UI and software features others have discussed because I use a simple workflow, which works great for that. I love it!
