  • So close to the perfect camera! --but had to return :(
Style: Canon XC15
I could write a small book on my love/hate relationship with Canon and what appears to be their intentional design of the near-perfect product with every camera body. Yet, every time, there is a show-stopper that forces one to ponder if they have ever used their own product before entering mass production. The XC15 is nearly the perfect b-roll and run-n-gun camera for the professional filmmaker. Light, feels good in the hand, has a beautiful lens, built-in (physical) ND filter, HDMI out for external recording, and the incredibly intuitive Canon user interface. I used this camera for a 4 days shoot ... and returned it. Why? The focus is a joke. Totally useless unless you are in a studio with completely controlled settings and unlimited time to get the focus just right. Why does a company that has for more than half a century produced cinema quality lenses produce a software driven lens that is not capable of consistent operation? It really does appear that no one at Canon ever tested their own product. In automatic focus mode, the objects it selects are out of your control. And if you touch the screen (which is a really bad idea if not on a tripod, pre-focusing for a shot not yet engaged, as the very act of touching the screen causes the camera to change its motion or position) what you select remains in focus for no more than a few seconds before the camera decides it will focus on something else. Select face-detection and the camera jumps from a person's face to another object as soon as the person turns their head more than 45 degrees from face-on. Select manual and you quickly realize that it is impossible to get the lens to behave in a consistent manner. A quarter turn in and pushes the focus to point B. A quarter turn back out pulls the focus to ... nothing close to where you started from. The User Guide makes it clear why occurs. Canon decided to implement a fully software driven focus ring with no mechanical coupling, no correlation to the percentage of the turn. Instead, the software looks at how fast you turn the ring, and then determines how far to push or pull. But the rate of change is highly subjective depending on how you are using the camera. With all manually focused lenses, that precise correlation between the movement of a single finger placed on the focus ring (or focus wheels) and the use of this camera as though it were an extension of your arm and hand is imperative. Instead, you make that motion and the result is different every time. I even setup an experiment, with the camera on a tripod. I placed one object 2 feet distance, another 10. I attempted to push and pull the focus from A to B and back again, monitoring the movement of the ring. If I attempted to move the lens slowly, carefully, I had to spin it more than 360 degrees! If I moved it quickly, the total rotation was reduced, but never the same rotation twice. Canon -- what the hell are you thinking? No one can use this! ... show more

  • Perfect camera for single-person video blogging, etc.
Style: Canon XC15
This is a spectacularly nice camera for my purposes---making video classes and blogs solo in my home studio. Spectacular image quality, easy to use and set up. The fixed lens is fine for my purposes, with plenty of mechanical zoom, and I love the fact that I can control everything remotely from an iPad (the camera has a web server, so you just point your browser at it). I'm not a pro, so the griping in other reviews that this camera doesn't have the same features as one that costs 8 times more doesn't faze me. I use this camera to make video classes. I publish videos at 720p, but record in 4K. That way I effectively have 4x digital zoom with no degradation of the image quality. I set everything up, go stand in front of the camera and start talking. By zooming out, I can move around and not have to worry about panning and such. I crop, zoom, and pan in Premier when I edit the video. I use a Sennheiser XSW 2-ME2-A Wireless Lavalier Microphone fed directly into the XLR input. The auto leveling on the audio signal works fine, though it's a little hotter than I'd like (no headroom at all, but no clipping either, so it's okay). When I record a live class, I use the other audio input for a room mic, and the fact that I can manually adjust that mic's level and leave my lav-mic feed on auto is really useful. I occasionally need to feed the video into my computer as if this were a web cam while I'm recording (for live webinars), and I use a Magewell USB Capture HDMI 4K Plus Device for that purpose. The only down side is that the CFast memory cards that you need for 4K recording are pricey. I've been using 256GB PixelFlash cards (which were the least expensive ones I could find), and they work fine. a 256K card will record a bit under 3 hours of 4K video. I use two and have one uploading to my computer while I record with the other. You could also feed the HDMI output into an external monitor and record there, but that would add a lot of unnecessary expense and complexity to the set up that I could do without. Finally, there's a Cannon app that will capture the video as you record, but that's less convenient for me than just going to a video card. ... show more

  • Having a hard time uploading videos to my computer and ...
Style: Canon XC15
Having a hard time uploading videos to my computer and editing them. I record on SD card and I have to remove card from camera each time and place in slot on computer. Also, didn't expect to spend more money to purchase a MXF video converter and new editing software. I don't want to return the camera but may have to. Update 9/21: Yesterday I purchased Pinnacle Studio 21 Ultimate and this software works like a charm with this camera so I had to up my stars to 5+ because the camera was never an issue it was getting my work off the camera and uploading it to the destination. You will never forget this camera is in your hard, and I don't know all the settings yet but the ones I use make my videos and pictures look fabulous with SD or CFast cards. Update 10/21 Still a pain to upload my videos. Paid this much and having so much trouble uploading the videos from the camera to my computer. Not happy. 10/26 Update: Wished I had sent it back. Cost me new software and still a pain to upload. Wasted all that hard working money for this expensive piece of frustration. Update 6/19/18: I purchased a video converter and problem solved! Up to 4 stars. ... show more
