  • Hard to Beat for the Price
I do video production as a profession, and I know that a lot of people are using DSLR's, but I have yet to be convinced that for the majority of video production an actual video camera isn't still the best option. It comes with all the audio features that are so important for quality video. I had been using an older XA10 for well over a decade, so I was eager to see how the Sony or Panasonics compared, but after doing hours upon hours of research, this camera made the most sense, especially when you consider the cost itself. Now a year and a half later and hundreds of hours of footage, I'm still just as happy with this camera. It's held up to the rigors of real-live run-and-gun video production and still looks and works great. Compared to the previous version of the camera, I love the integrated ND filters, but I find it exceedingly frustrating how much smaller the the flip out screen is. The camera is bigger, but the screen is smaller, which makes navigating the menus and even checking focus that much harder. I have no idea why they did this, and it's probably my only complaint about the camera. ... show more

  • Pro camera!
Hey, never mind my previous criticism! There is a switch on the top of the camcorder that toggles the auto mode! User error! Great camera!

  • Awesome camera 1 in my setup, replacing an FX DSLR (see details). Highly Recommended
I decided to take my time in reviewing the Canon XA50 Professional Camcorder (Black). While I have shot high quality video for years with an FX-sensor Nikon, it was in 1080p. When I felt a little pressure to shoot 4k source footage, I got a consumer-grade Canon Vixia, as I really couldn't justify anything nicer at the time (there really wasn't anything like the pro-sumer XA50/55 in the space, back then). So, after a year with the XA50, how do I feel about it? I operate the XA50 with the lens hood, the sound handle, and an XLR shotgun mic all of the time. In that configuration, it definitely is larger than a consumer camcorder, but still much smaller and more mobile than a pro cine camera. The unit is nice to hold and feels put together pretty well. You can shoot with either the flip-out screen, or with the viewfinder. The viewfinder is not extremely high resolution, but it telescopes and tilts (and is able to get past the optional top handle). It's my preferred way to shoot - especially in extremely bright or extremely dark settings. The flip-out screen is handy to have, for menus and playback, but I just don't find it good enough for shooting. I don't know it it's a TN (or maybe just a really bad VA) panel, but it's nearly useless from viewing angles other than dead-on. My setup typically consists of a small off-camera, hooded HDMI monitor, so it's not much of an issue, unless I'm travelling light. While I use ND filters on my DSLR (especially when shooting outdoors, with a fast lens), I underestimated how handy it was to have multiple ND filters built-in to the XA50. Wow. I don't think I want a motion cam without this feature ever again. The rest of the controls are intuitive and the most critical ones for shooting are ergonomically laid out. The 1" CCD, while huge compared to a cell phone, is small compared to even DX or mirrorless cameras. In return, you get a reasonable camera form factor, decent low light performance, and long focal length range (15x). The lack of a full-res display means that whatever you're using to view or peep your live or playback is going to be lower res... which is where it's good to know that the autofocus works pretty well. The XA50's AF is much better than what I'm used to - even on my DSLR (when shooting video). While there isn't significant hunting, I do typically shoot tripod'ed scenes where I just lock my focus. Image stabilization is pretty good - I use "Powered IS" on my static shots, but use "Dynamic" otherwise. Exposure control is similar to what you'd get on a low-end DSLR. While the white balance setup allows you to pick a value, I love that I can just use my grey cube. When indexing to my cube, I've not had to spend much time cleaning up the video in post. I use Sandisk Extreme PRO cards in the XA50, and had no issues with underrun, lost frames, lost files, or data corruption (though I'd imagine all other V30 cards would work great, too). The audio capabilities of the camcorder are pretty awesome. The on-camera mic is mediocre, but the multi-tracked audio accepting my XLR shotgun and a wireless lav is not something that's easy to do with my DSLR setup. With the XA50, it's easy. My biggest gripes are the flip-out screen, the consumer-grade menu interface, and the awful battery that is included. I got a couple BP-828s immediately, but they don't integrate well with the camera's form factor. I guess that's the price you pay for using a battery ecosystem that's meant for multiple products. The best thing I can say about the XA50, is that it seems like a bargain, for what you get. With the XA50, you get a much better CCD than the XA45, for not much more money. You save $500 off of the XA55, which really only differs in that you get to pass all 4 audio channels down the SDI. The XF400/405 let you shoot 4k60, but at a MASSIVE price premium (and still with the same CCD!). Shooting in 30p isn't a big deal for me, since I'm not shooting sports, and my content goes up to YouTube, anyway (which isn't kind to 4k/60 content). As long as you can get some light on your subject, and use an external mic, you should get great results with this camera. Highly Recommended ... show more
