Features

  • The latest L-Series hybrid lens featuring an iris ring for manual iris control during video capture.
  • A Nano USM is used for floating focus and a Voice Coil Motor (VCM) for rear focus which allows for quiet independant or synchronized actuation at high speed, great for video.
  • Improved durability and weather-resistant construction for use in harsh environments helps ensure reliability and dependability.
  • Incredibly minimal focus breathing.
  • Air Sphere Coating (ASC) helps significantly reduce lens ghosting and flare.

Description

The RF35mm F1.4 L VCM is an entirely new L-series lens, targeting a wide range of still-image and video shooters, with a combination of very moderate wide- angle coverage, a fast f/1.4 maximum aperture, and excellent optical design. On a full frame camera this lens gives you a slightly wide-angle look which has for decades been used in photojournalism and street photography, and has become a very popular wedding shoot look. On the video side, this lens really shines with a dedicated manual Iris ring, and a new linear focus motor called a VCM (Voice Coil Motor) that is virtually silent. The VCM works in tandem with a Nano USM on the floating focus unit for incredibly fast autofocus. And finally, focus breathing is barely noticeable on this incredibly versatile lens.

  • I was hesitant at first, but I’m glad I got it.
I work as a hybrid shooter (photographer and videographer). So far I have paired this lens on my R5ii and R5. I have not noticed any distortion. The lens is sharp, and has great build quality. It’s light weight makes it ideal for gimbal use or long day photography jobs like weddings. Canon makes a 1.8 non L series which I also used to own. That version is great and about $1000 less but you get what you pay for. I noticed distortion and more chromatic aberration in that version, it also wasn’t as sharp. This lens at F 1.4 gives you some good lowlight options or depth of field. The colors are true. The 35mm focal length is a very flattering focal length for portraits as well. Lastly, I’m a big fan of the iris control located in the lens itself. I’m happy to have this lens in the kit. ... show more

  • Perfect lens I am looking for
Nothing to complain with. The color performance is slightly inferior to the previous , this is not a defect but more than like a different style. The resolution is excellent, absolutely upgraded . Distortion does exist and needs to be digitally corrected, but as a trade-off for the reduced size and no focus breathing effect, it is acceptable. If you understand the difference between the total pixels and effective pixels of modern CMOS, you will realize that the pixels and focal length marked by the manufacturer are not a scam to you. ... show more

  • My Favorite Canon Lens
I'm a portrait photographer and I absolutely love this lens. I know 85 and 50 are the most popular for portraits. And I own the RF flagships of each of those focal lengths, but they're super heavy and I like to shoot in a story telling mode. 35mm, is the better focal length for that. In terms of image quality, it's right there in the ballpark of its larger 1.2 siblings. I personally don't shoot at 1.2 a lot which is why the maximum aperture of 1.4 didn't bother me with this 35mm lens. The trade off is that the lens is half the size and half the weight of the 1.2 models. That makes me way more likely to put it in my bag. On the video side, I love the smooth aperture ring. The only complaints I have is I wish there was a button to make the aperture ring clickable or smooth and while it seemed like a good idea for Canon to put an ND filter holder in the back of the lens, they don't make any ND filters to actually put into it. No third party companies do either. So you have to make an ND filter yourself. Hardly convenient. Nonetheless, this lens is quickly becoming my favorite. ... show more

  • Great lens, but could be cheaper
Canon is known for being expensive and majority of the time it is worth it. I have been wanting a lens with L glass for a long time, but I do not make money from photography so buying a $2000 - 3000 lens it out of the question for me. This is the first one that was cheap enough and wide enough that I was interested. It focuses lightning fast and is super clear. So far I am very happy with my purchase. The movement inside of the lens when it is powered off is definitely weird but it doesn’t really bother me. I do wish this was just a bit cheaper. ... show more

  • Bang for your Buck
Sharp lens. AF could be a little better, but not bad at all. Lightweight and easy to stabilize

  • Welllll…..
This lens is great. Don’t get me wrong. From the build quality to the image quality to the compact size. And it’s not crazy expensive. BUT. It’s not too far off from the 35mm 1.8 to be completely honest. Not sure if there is a $1000 difference there
