  • Good quality printing, menus on machine a little tricky
I have had this printer for 6 months and have overall been very happy. 1) Photo quality - I have printed out lots of color pictures and have been very happy with the printer wizard feature which asks you what you are trying to print and on what paper to determine the ink settings. I have found that this prints excellent pictures with the Canon glossy paper. It is important to use the printer wizard though, because the printer does make adjustments for different paper types. 2) Text print quality - Very crisp. I do print pictures, but a majority of my printing is printing out directions from mapquest, a letter from Word, my schedule from Outlook, etc. I have been amazed at how crisp the text quality is especially for a photo printer. This has very crisp text, even in color. 3) Scanning - Scanning both pictures and text is pretty good. You need to use the software that comes with the printer to make this happen, I haven't had any luck setting the printer and hitting scan from the machine itself. It was a little tricky at first, but it does scan even small text well on the highest resolution settings. 4) Copying - Good quality, but tricky. The menus on the printer are a little bit confusing to navigate, even after 6 months of use. Setting paper type, paper size, black and white or color copying, etc. is a bit tedious. There are lots of things you have to tell it, all in separate menus, and it is annoying. Once you get it set up, however, the copy quality is very good. If you were always copying the same type of thing (i.e. always 4x6 color photos on glossy paper, or always plain paper 8 1/2x11) then it wouldn't be an issue. 5) Ink life - My first ink tank (large black) has just ran empty after 6 months of moderate home use. My color tanks and small black tank are also running low. I don't print everyday, but I do print often, including pictures and color text. I think that changing tanks twice a year isn't bad and am happy with that given the reviews I had read that said this machine ate ink. All in all, a great printer. ... show more

  • No Longer Supported by Canon
I got a new computer and tried to hook up my Canon Pixma MP500 to it. I had the install disc but that wasn't working. I went online to look for a driver and was give the following message on the Canon website: "PIXMA MP500 has been retired. Product support is no longer available. Driver and content updates are not being made." So SOL on that one. I purchased this in 2006 but now it's obsolete. Time for a new printer. ... show more

  • Was good until the printer head died... see Canon lawsuit about that.
Did well until the printer head died, and no longer printed black. After buying a new printer, we found out about the lawsuit against Canon about this specific issue. The ink was generally cheaper than other printers, which made it attractive at the time.

  • Really nice multifunction
I bought this to replace both an older HP photosmart printer and a Visioneer scanner--one piece of hardware on my desk is MUCH nicer! The good reviews for the Pixma MP500 are well deserved! Both the print functions and the scan functions are speedy once it gets going after turning it on. I really like the auto-duplexing! I have printed a few photos, and the print on the included Canon photo plus paper samples is nothing short of incredible! I was a little disappointed in the photo prints on HP's top of the line photo paper (which I have a ton of in both glossy and matte finish). I emailed Canon tech support to see if they have generic settings in their printer driver for non-Canon paper like my HP driver had. They responded very quickly which was nice, but they gave me a not-to-unexpected answer of they don't support paper from other companies: "We do not have settings, nor are we able to recommend settings, for non-Canon brand media. Each company designs their papers with a coating best designed to absorb their ink formulation. As such using one type of ink and a different type of paper may produce undesireable results. It may be possible to achieve good print quality however we will not be able to assist with this as we do not support non-Canon media. " I can't really blame their answer, and they did respond very quickly. If you need a really good multi-function printer w/out an auto-feed feature, this could definitely be the one for you. The price is very respectable, the speed is awesome in this class, the scan and print quality is also great. I am very satisfied with my purchase! ... show more

  • Canon Pixma MP500
I've had my Canon Pixma MP500 for a number of years and it is still going strong with only ink replacement. I have not replaced the original ink cartridges but have refilled them about four times per year. I purchased separate ink bottles from an ink supplier along with syringes from an ink kit. I spent about $60 for the ink three or four years ago and have refilled from that $60 ink what would have cost over $400 if I had replaced those ink cartridges. I highly recommend to anyone needing a printer and wanting to save on the outrageous cost of ink cartridges, to get a printer that has individual ink cartridges like this one, then get the ink and refill them yourself. The refill takes about 10 minutes to do once you modify the cartridges for refill and will save you about $50 each time you refill them. It's easy to do. Or, instead of paying $50-$60 for new ink cartridges, just buy a new printer for a few dollars more. ... show more
