  • Pro Canon model
Style: Body Set: Body Only
There's no denying Canon is top of their game. I've shot 1-series bodies for 10+ years and when my trusty 1Dx broke, I decided to go mirrorless. The R1 was still just a rumour at that stage, so the R3 was my choice. Love the camera - it's a tank just like other pro Canon bodies. I do feel there are 2 things I dislike, but neither worthy dropping a star. 1. It's smaller than a typical 1 series. That may not be an issue, but even with small hands, I find the body small to use when I'm so used to the 1s. I feel my fingers on the lens are touching my hand on the vertical grip and that bothers me a little. 2. The dials seem 'digital'. The only example I can give here are when changing aperture. I'm set to 1/3 stops, so expect 3 clicks on the dial to be a full stop. I've noticed that quite often the first click doesn't actually register as a change and I'll need 4 clicks to get that full stop of difference. If you're looking at the camera, not a big deal, but when you want to quickly change the camera and matching off camera strobes, having to check the display and not just '3 click' it is really annoying too. Do I still love the camera? Sure. But I'd swap for an R1 to get that pre-shoot! ... show more

  • Favorite Camera Ever!
Style: Body Set: Body Only
I’ve owned a variety of cameras and brands over the years. I started on Canon for 35mm film then the 20D and 30D when I moved to digital. I switch to Nikon for awhile wanting a more tactile interface, and then Fuji (XT4 and GFX100s). But the Fuji autofocus (especially on the GFX) was just slowing me down with picture of kids, sports, and even eye-auto focus during weddings and portrait shoots. So I thought I would try the Canon R5 and see where Canon was with their new R system. I immediately knew the R5 was a true photographer’s camera. As tactile as Nikon with everything placed perfectly. The auto-focus was the best I had ever seen. The colors were incredible - especially for skin tones. Enter the R3. This is the best camera I have ever used. It has everything I love about the R5 (except the 45mp sensor) in a portrait photographers dream design. Super fast autofocus that is spot on. High frame per second when needed. Canon colors. Sight weight but build solidly. The Canon R3 makes photography fun. Really, it just makes it so fun to shoot images. At the price out there today after the R1 release, this camera is simply a deal! All the highest tech meeting the photographers needs. ... show more

  • Impressive Autofocus & Image Quality
Style: Body Set: Body Only
The Canon EOS R3 is an impressive mirrorless camera but, it is defiantly not in the same class as the 1Dx. It lacks several buttons and levers like the 1D’s vertical grip lock. If this is your first mirrorless camera and you shoot portraits or still life there is a learning curve. Out of the box, it is set for 30 frames per second JPEG images, sRGB color space, and focus on the nearest object. You need to change the default settings to shoot RAW, Adobe RGB, single frame, and focus point. Also, the viewfinder simulated the light level resulting in a black image using modeling lights. With a 1,000+ page manual, finding the right settings is a bit time consuming. To get a viewable image you must disable Display Simulation. The electronic shutter at 30 frames per second sounds like an electrical short circuit. I shot over 300 photos before realizing it was shooting 30 FPS. Set to single frame, it has a typical electronic shutter sound that can be turning off. I wear glasses and could not get the eye detection focus to work. I typically use focus points. The R3 autofocus is fast and very accurate except for some uniformly colored surfaces. Using the Canon RF 24-105mm lens, the image quality surpasses my 1Dx MII even though the R3 sensor has about the same number of pixels. The R3 uses the same battery as the 1Dx. Battery life is less than the 1Dx, but that is to be expected since the battery powers a larger screen and electronic viewfinder. If you have older model speedlights or strobe transceivers, you will need the Canon AD-E1 adapter. I could not use my PocketWizard Plus III until I bought the adapter. Stobe firing has been flawless using AD-E1. ... show more
