  • Heats & cooks quickly!
Style: Collapsible
We’d bought this square rocket stove last fall, but never tried it until yesterday. What fun! We’d decided to use it for dinner while out running errands. From the time we got home, ( I started a timer for baking potatoes, so I used that to tell how long the whole process took) until our chicken cutlets were ready to eat, was 40 min! Hubby went in to get the stove, bring it out, grab some cement blocks we had laying around to stack it on. I gathered twigs and small branches & fire starters (fat wood & lighter) while hubby got it out of the box for the first time, unwrapped it & looked at instructions and assembled it. It was pretty easy assembly, but as someone else mentioned, it would be nice if there was a way to prevent the leg pins from being able to slide out either way. Ours was completely clean, black & looked brand new. So all the people who got theirs with dirt or soot, probably did get used ones. I had seen videos in the past of how rocket stoves work, so I showed hubby that after placing the divider in, you put your firestarter & fuel in the larger, upper part & leave the bottom area for air flow. He got the fire started quickly. We only used twigs & small branches from our yard, which is what we love about this! And we only used a large handful or two total. While he got the fire going, I floured 3 cubed chicken breasts and put bacon grease in a 10 inch cast iron skillet and we set it on the stove to heat the oil. Once it was melted, hubby thought the oil was hot enough and had me put 2 of the chicken breasts on. It wasn’t quite ready cause they didn’t sizzle. I put a lid on to help hold the heat in, cause it was chilly & breezy. It heated up quickly and in probably 5-6 minutes the chicken was done! I removed the 2 and added more grease & cooked the 3rd piece of chicken. (These were cubed /tenderized by the butcher, so they do cook fairly quickly anyway). Using the cast iron, the chicken cooked perfectly & browned without burning. The pan was very stable on the burner, although I was a little nervous of it tipping. But it felt good & stable & level. Level will depend on the surface you set up on. We chose to put a cookie sheet under it before setting up, to protect our surface as well as catch ashes that fall out the bottom. The fire started well, and did smoke for a few minutes until it got going very hot. Then there was almost no smoke, other than a few whisps coming out the glowing embers at the grate. The bag is made well and ITS ROOMY! I love how the pieces were made to nest in the largest tube! And the whole thing sets down in the carry/storage bag with room to put a few things. I put a box of matches & a few more fatwood sticks in there to have on hand if we take it on a picnic or something. We did have a little trouble figuring out this morning (after it cooled) how to get the upper chimney off the main body. The directions did not explain this and we couldn’t remember exactly how it fastened after we set in. Hubby finally figured out to slide the chimney stack up the body to get it off. Other than that, the main negatives are waiting for it to cool before packing it up (I’m afraid pouring cold water on it would crack or warp it in some way) and cleaning the soot off! My hands were filthy after disassembling & packing it in the case. Overall, we love this little stove! Wished we’d had it when we used to camp a lot! Can’t wait to do some cooking on it with the grandkids! ... show more

  • I would give more stars for utilization instructions
Style: Collapsible
The media could not be loaded. It took us a min to figure out that you should NOT light the sticks from the front part of the stove. Instead, start the fire directly down in the vertical tube. The fire WILL not start if you set the fire starter from the front, tilted tube. It just burns and doesn’t go down into the shoot. Wasted time and lots of smoke created that way. You should, however, feed the sticks into the lower tube as the fire is going. If you keep pushing the sticks back, they will light up fast. One other option is to light the vertical tube from the grates at the bottom, just be sure you have starter down the shoot to light up. This is a great rocket stove but instructions are critical. We literally couldn’t get a fire started by lighting the feeding tube part at the front/bottom. If you use fire started down the vertical tube and light it straight on down (just like lighting a chimney from the top, so to speak). It would help to have a long lighter and fire proof gloves is a must because this thing gets HOT fast! You could also use a regular lighter with great care. Or light some paper and drop it down the tube where there is more fire starter. ... show more

  • Fantastic little stove!
Style: Circular
The media could not be loaded. I got the cylinder style of this stove. I unpacked it the afternoon it arrived, and was cooking dinner within the hour. I have a yard full of trees that are forever dropping sticks. Between my Sun Joe chipper shredder, and this little stove, I plan on having these piles of twigs destroyed by the end of the summer. I was amazed on how little paper I used. I had grabbed a Food Lion ad foldout from the store, and used only one page of it to light a few small twigs, it quickly ignited-and I added a few more substantial twigs/branches. It quickly heated up. I cook with cast iron, so I was a little concerned with stability. Some of my cast iron is very old, so the bottom of my pot was not exactly flat. I had to watch that pot a bit more, but my skillet was solid. I cooked a sort of vegetable/stir fry, and then cooked my meat separately (it all took less than 10 minutes). I like this stove so much, that I may get another. No more cooking in the kitchen this summer, this is so much fun! On a more serious note, if in a SHTF/weather situation, you can cook quickly, with little fuel, and little smoke. If you are on the fence, get off and buy this, you will not regret it. {As you can see, I was in a hurry and just set it up on my fire pit base!} ... show more

I live along the Texas coast and have lots of storms during the hurricane 🌀 season. I bought this for backup just in case the power goes out. I can use after the storm is over to cook on.

Style: Circular
Solid - Sturdy rocket stove Bag - Fits nicely and easy to move / carry around Grate on bottom makes debris fall out as it is used Gets plenty of airflow Burns hot off of small twigs / branches, easily boil water in emergency or camping. You just have to constantly feed it, gather up the twigs / small branches first before you start the fire because once you start it you will be constantly feeding it while you cook or wait for your water to boil. ... show more
