  • I took it apart. Much higher quality than I expected. Fun to play.
Size: 32 Keys Color: Blue
Not an instrument I'm terribly familiar with, so I can't remark on its timbre. Its in tune. I can hear some beats with a tuning tone... but very very minor. Would probably change with breath force a bit too. If you have accompaniment then have them tune to it. It can come apart easily for sanding of the reeds (i assume its like a harmonica) to tune it up maybe. Much higher quality than I was expecting. Not to say its stellar... but put a brand on it (like honer) and they'd be 50 bucks. I'm sure its offered for much more under some branding somewhere. Keys feel good and are tight. Air hose is much more supple than expected (I expected something like a slushy straw from the fair). Housing is much more substantial than I thought it would be. It feels a lot more quality than I expected. Notes seem to be in tune across the octaves. Or as much as pretty much any non-concert grade instrument is. I took it apart. Comes open with a handful of screws. Valve assembly and reed plates are one unit so no worry about the keys and springs going everywhere. It has steel (stainless?) reed plates with brass reeds attached. I cannot discern how the reeds are attached. I assume they're riveted. I didn't take off the reed plates from the valve body to look (too many tiny screws). There doesn't appear to be any material (cork etc) on the keys. They simply cover a hole. But I didn't get far enough to know for sure. There is no clack at all. Down or up. Very quiet key operation. So it must have something on there to cushion the valves. When the keys are pressed all the way down, they feel stopped. They don't feel like they're going to break if you push harder. Like the key has bottomed out in the case not that some other part is limiting its movement. I confirmed. The key seems to hit the bottom of the case. You can make it click if you hit it quickly. Breath control can greatly effect the volume without any overblow overtones or squeaks. From a "talking volume" to a yell volume. ... show more

  • a great teaching device for music
Size: 32 Keys Color: Blue
The melodia has a much better sound quality than expected. The amount of air it takes in order to play is significant yet still easy enough for a small child to play. It will be quite useful for a child to learn about breath and phrasing.

  • A nice entry-level instrument
Size: 32 Keys Color: Black
My five star rating is based on the price. If you are looking to learn this novel instrument, this is a great place to start. Entry level instruments can be a gamble. You typically have to pay a decent amount just to get something reliable, and a lot of beginners fail because their instruments are just so bad. This is a decent entry-level hooter, and I'm happy I made the purchase. It doesn't necessarily feel like a high quality instrument, but it sounds decent when you actually play it. It's in key, and it has a good volume. I've played one other hooter. It was a Hammond that was considerably more expensive, but the differences were pretty apparent. The Hammond had a spit valve, which is something this one lacks. Also, I was able to figure out how to bend notes with the Hammond, though it was more difficult than a harmonica. I haven't been able to figure that out with this melodica, though I have developed a way to compensate by doing quick hammer-ons when a bend is desired. For someone like me who might perform one song with this instrument down the road a ways, those two issues are not deal breakers. The third issue isn't a dealbreaker, either, but it is the one thing that I really do wish the instrument could do better. Blowing chords takes a considerable amount more effort if you want to keep the same volume as the rest of the melody. For a novice player, you might not even notice. Heck, most novice players probably aren't even playing chords. I've learned a few songs on this, but the one song I bought it for is a fairly simple note progression that has a couple of chords thrown in. You have to be careful to hit those chords just right or they will sound really weak. I am learning to get better that that, but the Hammond I played produced chords beautifully without really any extra effort. The Hammond melodica I'm comparing this to retails for $550. I believe it is the "top of the line" model, and it is made for performances. It even has a jack to hook it into an amplifier. This model is $30. If you're learning the instrument, this is a no-brainer. If you already know the instrument, then you're probably not reading this review. ... show more

  • Good for beginners
Size: 32 Keys Color: Black
Bought for my nephew who is a huge keyboard nerd. It's a great cheap beginner option and has multiple mouth pieces. Sound quality is not something I would ever record or perform with but for a kids/ beginners melodica it definitely gets the job done.

  • Works great, awesome quality, amazing sound
Size: 32 Keys Color: Black
Bought it as a gift for my musical Partner, and my partner absolutely loves it, if you have previous piano experience and any wind works instrument experience it's SUPER easy to just pick up an play, which we really hoped it would be. But even if you don't have previous experience (like me) it's still really easy to learn and a lot of fun to just play, love that it comes with two air tubes, as well as a sturdy mouth piece that is almost sax shaped, that really lets you play the instrument in different ways. ... show more

  • Not for long car rides
Size: 32 Keys Color: Black
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my niece. I knew my brother and his family had a long car ride back to their house after the Christmas party, which is why I chose this particular gift. It worked perfectly as a fun wind instrument for a beginner piano player, and as a method of torture for my younger brother on the long car ride home. That was my Christmas gift for myself. ... show more
