  • Tried 3 other smart dimmers, this is the worst one yet
Style: Dimmer Switch
The dimmer could have been great but instead it flops due to some really poor software and a massive feature flaw. Setup - Poor Connections and a Worse App I've set up 3 other smart dimmers in other rooms to try out brands and this one had the most issues. Even if you ignore the connectivity issues with setup, the app is awful. Always On Location Services - Not for the Privacy Minded It requests your location constantly, even when you are not using the app or trying to do anything with the dimmer. The app will flat out crash and refuse open if you try to only give it location access "when using this app" instead of "always" and you will get tons of notifications that its harvesting your data (either poor programing or shady data mining). Dimmer Memory - Dealbreaker for Most Believe it or not, this dimmer has no built-in memory function. This is an absolute deal breaker when using it to control recessed LED lights. Recessed LED cans are always way too bright at 100% and you need to use dimmers to keep them at a comfortable level. However, every other dimmer I have used has been able to solve this problem with built in memory. i.e. If you have the light dimmed to 50%, hit the off button, then turn the light back on, it SHOULD go back to 50%... not this dimmer, it will always reset to 100%. I can't believe this is a thing, but I've already reset and spent way too much time trying to fix it. There is no reason they should rely on "scenes" or other 3rd party smart house features to have this function. You can use the down button instead of the regular button, but that's just a silly design/compromise. Closing Thoughts I need to mention that I really wish this dimmer was better and there is a chance they could fix all my issues in firmware and software. I love the design and the price is solid. They could have done so much more with just a tiny bit of development. For example, the light ring is either always on or always off... but it has a RGB led with dimming... there is no legitimate reason they shouldn't let you customise that color and brightness (thousands of PC hardware products do it with the same hardware). It hurts to see how great this could have been... but I can't recommend this dimmer due to the issues above. ... show more

  • The "C" is for cr@p
Style: Dimmer Switch
Like most smart switches, this requires a neutral-line-load-ground to install. If you don't know what that means, you should contact an electrician and find out what the cost to upgrade your wiring will be. But this is a standard in most smart switches. The problem is the "C by GE" app and the software behind the hardware. Annoyingly, opening the app will require you to enable Bluetooth and location services every time you open it. It wouldn't be so bad, but you'll be opening it all the time to troubleshoot connectivity problems. The app will lose plugs and switches regularly. This will cause Alexa to lose connectivity/control of the device. If you're like me, you'll start to get annoyed when Alexa tells you "I'm sorry but there's no device by that name" fairly quickly. The "C by GE" app is your main line to trouble shoot your connection issues, but it won't recognize "C by GE" devices outside of your phone's Bluetooth range. Overall, I would recommend against the entire "C by GE" line of products (I've tried several they're all having the same issue) until GE can get its app deployed correctly. ... show more

  • Great switch
Style: On/Off Toggle Switch
I got the toggle switch, a dimmer switch and a button based on/off switch, along with a number of C By GE led lights. These switches do install quite easily, and look pretty nice. They seem to work pretty well, I was able to add them in the C By GE Android app and also to Google Home and they can be programmed onto Google Home routines, and respond well to the voice controls. While they work good though, I have noticed that whenever you lose power and the power comes back on it seems all the lights controlled by these switches also turn on. The dimmer switch lost the ability to dim, I had reopen the C By GE app and re-select the bulb type, then it was working again. Also the switches don't seem to have any indicator on them as to whether or not the light its controlling is on or off. You can see in the apps what is currently on or off, and usually you can tell if the light the switch controls is in the room of the switch. But one of the switches I put for my front porch light, I can't see that light easily without opening the front door. I can't glance over at the smart switch to determine if it's currently on or off as it doesn't tell you. There are LED indicator lights on the switches but they're not used to notify you if the light is on or off. The toggle switch has a tiny LED that seems to only flash during initial setup and if it loses wifi connectivity, beyond that it always stays off. The button based switches have a LED ring around the button, during normal use this LED is solid white and never changes. It's blue during initial setup, and red if it loses wifi. There seems to be no option in the settings to turn on the LED ring only if the light is on (or off) and turn the LED back off when the opposite criteria is met. If I was able to look over at my smart switch toggle near my front door and see a blue LED that is on, I'll know the front porch light should also be on. If I see no LED light, I could assume it's actually off. Sadly this weirdly doesn't exist but considering all the switches came with LED lights, seems to only be a software limitation at this point as to whether or not they could be used for these purposes. Maybe they'll add this type of functionality, would help greatly. EDIT - Upon further review, only the C by GE smart bulbs turn back on after a power outage, whether they are controlled by a C by GE switch or stand alone. So this would be a bulb problem, not a switch problem, the switch just returns power back to the bulbs but the bulbs forget they were supposed to be 'off' so they turn on following a power outage. When the switch is configured to control a normal non smart bulb, if it was off before the outage it'll remain off after. ... show more

  • Malfunctioning motion detector causes light to come on randomly
Style: Motion-Sensor + Dimmer Switch
The dimmer switch is relatively easy to setup (as long as you can identify load vs. line wires). I bought it for the motion detection in a bathroom with the hope that I could have it come on at a dimmer, lower light level at night. The motion detection worked fine for a few days until started coming on randomly. It will turn on via motion detection at a dimmer lever - ever, and not at night. Setting a light schedule disables the motion detector function. GE tech support wasn’t able to help with the random / faulty motion detection. I felt I knew more about how the system worked than the person I talked to. I would have returned it if I hadn’t already installed it. ... show more
