  • Good Value for Money
Based on excellent reviews, I bought this stove and haven't been disappointed. Shipping time from Germany was only six days. I bought an MSR Stowaway 1100 ml pot specifically to use with the stove. The stove packs flat and easily fits in the pot, along with my condiments, utensils, firestarting gear and dishwashing soap. The constuction of the stove is first rate. It is easy to put together and take apart. When assembled, it is solid and makes a good potstand, even for a relatively large pot. With an aluminum foil windscreen, the stove performs well, even in moderate wind. These hobo stoves usually work best if one takes the time to lay a fire, instead of just throwing in sticks. This one is no exception. The wood is nearly, but not entirely, burned to ash, which is very good for a stove like this. The ash plate on the bottom is a nice touch, rarely found in hobo stoves. With the pot I use, it is easy to feed wood through the front port while cooking. If you have fuel prepared and ready, this stove is easy to cook on. It isn't just for boiling water. The stove performs adequately with a Trangia spirit burner, but that configuration obviously is an afterthought. If the Bushcraft Essentials directions are followed, the front panel is replaced before using the burner. This makes it difficult to access the burner and impossible to use the burner simmer ring. If you want to put the burner out instead of letting it burn out, you have to remove the trivet bars and drop the closed simmer ring (or something) down into the stove. That's awkward. The problem is solved by leaving the front panel off and relying on the trivet bars to provide structural integrity to the stove. On the other hand, the stove works very well with fuel tablets. With the fire plate in the upper position, it is easy to slide the tabs into the stove and light them through the front port. With a windscreen in moderate wind, I found that I could reliably bring one cup of water to a low boil with one Coghlan's tablet in eight to nine minutes. Three Coghlan's tablets, placed on edge next to each other are sufficient to boil three cups of water, enough for a cup of hot tea and a hydrated meal. I intend to carry tablets for backup fuel. In summary, I am pleased with the quality construction of the stove, the utility of it, and the very reasonable price. ... show more

  • A tiny, flexible, workhorse.
I'm a pretty big fan of wood stoves. Starting a fire in the woods is always a chore for me since I don't have the skills to really get a fire going without a little help. But this little guy makes starting a fire using a magnesium fire starter fairly simple. Compared to the Emberlit Titanium mini, this wood stove is a little heavier and a little smaller. It has a few features enhancements over the emberlit mini, with features more commonly seen in larger devices. The first is that there are two base plates. one is the ash pan and one holds the wood. the one for holding the wood has holes in it to draw air from below and also to drop ashes to the ash pan. This is very helpful as a buildup of ash decreases air flow to embers and fuel, which reduces heat. With this unit, a few taps on the stove shakes ash loose so it drops to the ash pan. Interestingly, this unit also adds the ability to raise the fuel plate. You can notice from the image that this device is basically 4 walls, one of which has a larger opening. The fuel plate has two rims, or wings, or flaps, if you will. and these are designed to normally slot into two slits built into two of the walls. but the fuel plate can actually rest on the base of that larger opening as well, bringing the fuel a lot higher and closer to the upper rim. Great innovation. When the base plate is on the lower position, you can easily fit an alcohol stove in there as well, so this unit, combined with a trangia alcohol stove and a bottle of denatured alcohol, makes for a very versatile cooking setup. Ideal for a weekend jaunt alone when the weather isn't too cold. Tougher campers could probably make due with just this in colder weather, but for me, winter camping requires a lot more heat and a lot more cooking efficiency, so I bring a gas canister stove or multi-fuel stove alone with a larger wood stove to help boil water faster, and act as a tiny campfire. All in all, I would say, from a feature, durability, and flexibility perspective, this is my new favorite miniature wood stove. Great job Bushbox. Awesome piece of gear. ... show more
