Description

The existing curriculum on guitar scales is inadequate for teaching guitarists the skills they really need. What is needed is a clear and simple method of learning one scale in all positions, and of learning all scales in one position. Guitarists need to be able to call up any scale to their fingertips instantaneously regardless of key, mode, string, or position and they need to be able to do so without memorizing hundreds of pages of diagrams. Fortunately, this is not only possible, but it is also incredibly simple. This booklet will teach you how. Read more

  • Brilliant, elegant simplicity
I have been playing guitar for over 20 years, and I've gone through countless books, tutorials, tips, tricks, etc. i have always felt that guitar theory books were impossibly obtuse and overcomplicated in the way that they all seem to go about exhaustively outlining 20 million different variations of scales and modes for each key - as if you are expected to memorize these thousands of different bits and pieces and exceptions. Knowing a little bit about piano, And that keyboard patterns are so much more straightforward and simple than guitar patterns, I have long suspected that there was some better way than just brute memorization to be able to translate all those scales into some root components that you could actually remember and then apply in most situations. If you have some elementary music knowledge, this book does exactly that, and does it beautifully in quite literally just a few pages. If you want to really grasp the core elements that will allow you to play in key anywhere on the neck, this very short read is totally worthwhile. 5 stars. ... show more

  • simple and very effective
I felt compelled to write a review of this book to highlight what this book isn't. One of the negative reviews of this book stated that the author's presentation is common sense. It isn't. I have seen many many books on scale patterns over 35 years of guitar playing and have never come across anything similar. Also, this book isn't a way to learn modes. It is of critical importance that a musician understand the underlying principal of modes and the corresponding "character" of a mode. As always, your ears have to be the ultimate guide. However, this technique allows a guitarist to play major modes anywhere on the fretboard at rapid speed without thinking. It is my contention that improvisation is a mixture of memorized patterns (licks) and simpler phrases, conceived on the spot. The author's approach, when mastered (which can be done in a few days at the most), permits the soloist to focus on adding interest to their phrases, without worrying about where their fingers need to be. This book isn't a way to become a great soloist. But it is a way to make the task less tedious. And for 99 cents, really, who could possibly complain? It will be interesting to try the author's approach for modes of the natural minor and jazz (melodic) minor scales. ... show more

  • Basic 3 note per string major scale, explained well
This is the basic 3 note per string major scale, so not a new concept at all. However, it is explained in a very good way and is easy to understand. You are presented with a few simple rules to follow so that you don’t need to memorize each of the 7 different patterns. Just remember the rules and apply them as you go. I found it quite helpful how the rules were defined and explained. But in the end, is the 3 note per string scale right for you?? Hmmm, idk. Not sure it’s right for me because I find the 5 fret spread of pattern X to be a bit awkward. ... show more

  • This Plus Michael Pillitiere's Short YouTube Series Are the Keys
By watching Michael Pillitiere's YouTube series and using this book as a reference, I was able to learn in less than an hour what was taking me decades to learn. Amazing!

A lot of good information. I have read it several times. There is knowledge in there I have yet to dig out.

  • Is this "Ah-Hah!!" worth it?
A novel look at major guitar scale construction that is predicated upon scale construction via the 3 notes to a string approach. A formulaic set of 3 note patterns (X, Y and Z if you will) are used to construct major scales in a cook book sort of approach. The author explains that it requires less memorization than attempting to learn individual scale patterns in the more traditional sense. The rub might be the requirement to memorize a new set of conventions in order to be successful. The other issue might be that 3 notes on a string scale formations are less convenient to play when improvising due to the note spread, particularly in the lower registers. While there appears to be an interesting "ah-hah!" hook in this short book, it is unlikely, in my opinion, to change the way you approach playing major scales. Nonetheless, there are those that might feel the "ah-hah" is worth the diminutive price. If anything, it's a different look at the fret board and scale construction. ... show more

  • Really worthwhile . . .
Michael Pillitiere's "Building the Better Guitar Scale" is well written and brief. I liked the no-frills style, and I especially liked the idea at the core of the little book. I don't want to spoil the idea for you by going into it in detail, but I will say that it is an example of conceptual thinking at its best. If you buy this book and spend an evening with it and a guitar, you will have an invaluable new tool to apply to your playing. I'm not kidding--it will take you about two hours if you are slow, like me. I got out a pencil and made the drawings my own by recreating them on paper, then I practiced the scales until I got the idea clear in my head. Next I plan to apply the idea to modes and improvization all over the neck. You can't lose on this investment--pony up your 99 cents, you won't be sorry. I bought the Kindle version of "Building the Better Guitar Scale," and for once the Kindle was entirely adequate for the drawings. ... show more

  • Great work...
After spending the $27 for the course on YouTube "every third" advertisement...and following along...I realized it was simply this same material that had been nicked and dolled up with the "infomercial" treatment. I realized I had it on Kindle and saved myself the chatty-kathy experience the breakthrough promised... ... show more
