Description

Building Beehives For Dummies (8) was previously published as Building Beehives For Dummies (0). While this version features a new Dummies cover and design, the content is the same as the prior release and should not be considered a new or updated product. The easy way to build your own beehives and beekeeping equipmentBuilding Beehives For Dummies is the follow-up book to the bestselling Beekeeping For Dummies. It provides everything you need to learn how to build some of the world's most popular hives and beekeeping accessories. For each design the book includes a detailed materials list (what lumber, hardware and fasteners you'll need), step-by-step building instructions, and illustrative drawings that show how the components all fit together. There are over a dozen plans in all, including the traditional Langstroth hive, the eight frame garden hive, designs for elevated hive stands, the Warre hive, screened bottom board, the Kenya top-bar hive, four-frame observation hive, hive top feeders, and more. The book contains introductory chapters that teach you the basic carpentry skills necessary to build any of the plans in the book. Whether you are a new beekeeper or a seasoned ol’timer, Building Beehives for Dummies provides you with the information you need to plan and succeed at building beehives (and other cool accessories). You'll discover what type of hive to build, hints on how to maintain your equipment, what bees need to stay happy and healthy, where to locate your hive, and much more. Covers "bee space," the critical technical measurement within a beehive that's crucial for easy inspection of your coloniesOffers guidance on keeping both urban and suburban neighbors happy, getting proper permissions, and understanding regional laws and regulationsProvides creative ideas for dressing up hives for fun and profitIn today’s world of self-sufficiency, back-to-basics and sustainability, building beehives is a fun hobby that both you and your bees will appreciate and benefit from. • Good book for seasoned woodworkers
Looked online for instructions on building hives and it seemed every site had a different method of construction although all ended up with the same basic dimensions which are necessary if you are purchasing frames or other pieces of a hive. Since my woodworking shop is fairly well equipped, I wanted to use box joint construction which is one of the strongest possible joints and therefore the hive should last and take some abuse. Building Beehives for Dummies was one of the few books or instruction sets that I found that used the box joint construction method. Also, method shown for building frames was straight forward and again was within my abilities. This book was purchased as an ebook which made reading some of the diagrams difficult and skipping between pages was tough. Would probably purchase the printed edition if I were to buy this book again. ... show more

  • Very detailed instructions and plans
Format: Kindle
I've made several hive bodies and inner/outer covers so far from this book. To help someone else from wasting some flashing, make sure the 8 frame outer cover flashing is cut to 17-3/4″ x 24" (not 17-3/4″ x 22″) as written in the book. The cover frame is 22" and cutting the flashing to 22" won't leave enough for the 1" lip to fold down. Other than that, no issues and really solid hives as a result! ... show more

  • Very helpful but check measurements
Format: Paperback
The author re-hashed much of the material from ‘Beekeeping for Dummies’ which was kind of a waste of time for me, having just read said book. However, if someone were to read only this book and not the other, the material would be fresh. I found a couple of mistakes in the measurements so one needs to check everything before cutting the parts. Otherwise I found the book quite helpful as I had no idea where to begin building bee hives. ... show more

  • Well organized with several styles of hives
There are several styles of hives to build. The plans, materials lists and cutting lists are straight forward. The accessories section is a definite plus. I am particularly interested in the Langstroth hive and the accessories. Since my area has plenty of winter and spring rain an angled entrance would help keep moisture out of the hive. Maybe the author can add that to the accessories section as a screened bottom board with an angled entrance. ... show more
