  • A lot of great information.
Format: Kindle
There is a lot of information here. It's nice to have it all in one place. It is well laid out, and since I got the ebook, there are a lot of links that really help. I also got the bonus information of the coop plans. The plans were good, but it would have been nice for there to have been a picture of what the finished coop would look like, or at least some step-by-step illustrations. I've not built enough to be able to imagine how these things look in my head. I really like his writing style. It's like listening to a friend. I highly recommend for all poltry beginners. ... show more

  • Great ressources
Format: Kindle
I loved the book combination. Both books were very informative, full of useful resources, and the writing style is very conversational and engaging, which makes a pleasant read. Perhaps a slight improvement could have been some visual elements to avoid a text-only format, but overall, this is a great book package I could easily recommend. ... show more

  • If your starting from nothing. This is a good guide.
Format: Kindle
If you’re starting from zero, this guide lays it out in a calm, step-by-step way. Breed comparisons are handy, and the coop section pushes you to think predator-proof first. Feeding and health tips feel practical for small backyards, not hobby farm fantasy. The bonus coop plans are a nice kickstart. I appreciated the duck and goose coverage. Since most guides skip them, the checklists make setup feel easier. ... show more

  • Great overall guide if you ae getting into backyard poultry
Format: Kindle
I am not getting chickens anytime soon. BUT we are working to move out to a more rural area (with no pesky HOA, they are not a fan of chickens.) Until that (hopefully) near future, I try to learn as much as I can to be ready. I grew up with chickens, so I am used to them, but as a kid and teen, didn’t really put much thought into the details of it all. I found this book extra interesting, since it touches on not just chickens, but also includes ducks and geese. I have been dreaming of having a couple “guard geese”, they are supposed to be great at protecting your chicken flock and keeping any unwanted visitors out. Even sounding the alarm when predator birds fly above. So cool! The breed comparison guide was very helpful, since we have to be careful and select a breed that can handle our hot climate as much as possible. But there are so many other things that I never thought if. We are planning on building our own coop (unless there is already one in place), so the included plans are a bonus. I have heard that racoons can be pretty vicious against chickens, so I was happy to pick up a few great tips from the book in how to predator proof. All in all it is a great guide book, especially if you are on a budget (aren’t we all). I took one star off, since I felt it was a bit text heavy. ... show more

We own 20 chickens and some of them have mites on there legs. Mites can be a real problem and there's three types, body, feathers and legs. The leg mites was not covered in this book and they can be a serious problem and need to be aggressively treated. I was surprised this was not covered. This book also needed photo's for varies aspects. ... show more

  • If you have genuine interest in chickens, this is a great book
Format: Paperback
I grew with my Dad raising chickens in the backyard when I was in elementary school and early jr high. I wanted to revisit the experience a little through a book with chickens and not so much the ducks and geese and if I want to try it on my own this time. I have to say, this is an absolutely fun book to read with real content and value if you want to start. I literally started laughing when I read the first line of the book as if the author knew I wanted to come back and start raising my own little chicks. Lol. For a moment I was a little disappointed that I couldn’t see any pictures at first to supplement the read BUT there is Facebook QR in this book that was a great resource. But even without that, I would still be very happy with this book. The value and knowledge is solid based on my memories with my Dad raising chickens plus it had a lot of extras I didn’t even think about. Highly recommended, especially if you have no experience raising chickens. ... show more
