I purchased this strictly as a backup for any scenario where charging the Baofeng batteries was not possible but utilizing the extremely common AA battery was. It works exactly as advertised. It holds 6 AA batteries and comes with 1 dummy battery. If you’re using a 5W radio (UV-5R, UV-5X3, etc) then you’ll place 5 AA batteries and the 1 dummy battery into this adapter and then mount it to the radio. If you’re using a radio with a slightly higher output like the BF-F8HP (what I use for all of mine) then you’ll want to fill all 6 spots with actual AA’s, not using the dummy battery at all. Hope that makes sense! Also, an important thing to note is that the first few times I installed this onto my radio, it required a good amount of force to push until it clicked into place, unlike my other batteries that click into place with gentle pressure. After about 5 times of installing this battery, it became way easier and now clicks on just as easily as the other batteries. So for anyone that gets this and runs into it not locking in easily right off the bat, don’t freak out and all that, you’ll be just fine. Not much to say about this. It's a perfect fit for my F8HP. It means I have a way to get power to the radio even if the power is gone. I'm not planning to use this instead of the regular battery, but in addition to it for any sort of emergency (or while traveling with the radio so I don't have to carry the charger too, I'm lazy). I'm quite pleased with the fit and the ease of replacing the batteries. This is a great addition to a great radio. ADDITION: I also got the car charger recently. It works really well. Fits precisely and generates exactly the right power. It does feel a little cheap and fragile. That makes me worry about it banging around in the car. Overall, I'm quite pleased. It serves it purpose as a backup power source on AA batteries if prolonged power outage occurs. It does have a little difficulty locking into place that the top. You have to use a bit of force to make it hold an not slide off.

Great for emergency back up to the original radio battery. Just buy some "AA" batteries and use the "dummy" battery that came with it to fill the pack and it works great. I haven't used it that much or for any length of time, so I can't tell or say how long the power will last or the longevity it will run the radio. Just like the fact that you can just bring or buy some "AA" batteries and don't have to wait for the main radio battery to charge, which is about 4 - 6 hrs or more and you're back in business with this and up a running again. ... show more

This is my second AA battery pack. My first one failed as the door wouldn't stay closed without tape and after a short time it didn't work at all. This new one seems to be made better, latches tight and fits very well. FYI, remember to use the fake, yellow battery when using 1.5v alkaline batteries. IMHO this is not a great option if you plan on using rechargeable AA batteries as the 3800 Rechargeable Battery Pack would actually be a lot cheaper. This pack is a great option for when the "you know what" hits the fan as you can keep this on the shelf for a long time. ... show more

This is a great backup that uses AA type alkaline batteries for powering your radio. As a ham that never knows what situation I might be facing for an emergency, this is very useful. I, and most people have a cache of AA batteries that I keep all of the time. This means if I drain my rechargeable batteries, this can be deployed with some fresh AA batteries to keep me on the air. ... show more

This review is about the BL-5 AA. This battery pack should cost about half the price -- there's not much to it. And you will need to modify it as other reviewers have indicated, or it will short itself near the center-top, where the external contacts pass near the internal battery contact. That said, it's very versatile. It works with both Alkaline and NiMH (e.g., Eneloop) batteries, which is the reason I bought it. I imagine it would suffice in an emergency. I only wish they would release a proper USB-compatible battery for these radios. ... show more

I am impressed! This is a quality piece of work. The plastic is high grade and thick enough to be plenty durable. It has a very solid feel, and is a perfect fit to my radio. With the batteries installed, you can't tell it form the 3800MAH battery. Battery performance will vary depending on the batteries you use, but with 3800 MAH NiMH batteries, It lasted far longer than the 3800MAH LiON battery I bought with the radio ever did. BTW, that is why I bought this battery box. The Baofeng 3800 MAH LiON battery I bought was thoroughly depleted after just 6 months of use. I figured I could do better with NiMH batteries. I highly recommend getting this instead of the standard 3800 MAH battery. ATTENTION: Reviewer, For Realz pointed out a design flaw in this battery box that could cause injury. There is good chance the battery pack can short out if the middle battery contact comes in contact with the radio contact. There is only a small air gap between them. I used a piece of credit card plastic to insulate them, It wedged in tight enough it won't come out, but to be sure, you can SuperGlue it in place. This will solve this hazardous problem. This does not change my rating, but this *is* something you need to know. ... show more
