  • The Best Men's Dress Shoe
Size: 11 Color: Tan Calfskin
I have worn Johnston and Murphy for many years. Just pick one up and look at and you can see the quality in the shoe. They cost more, and they are worth it. I prefer the 100% leather soles and J&M is one of the few brands that carry that. In my more frugal days, I've gotten up to two resoles from one pair, with the top half still looking good. Lately I have found a new use for these sturdy, comfortable shoes with leather soles ... dancing shoes! Once I bought a J&M dress shoe, I never considered another brand. ... show more

  • First Impressions with an Update
Update: I measured 11.5 C on the Brannock device, and so I ordered these in 11.5 C and while I initially thought they were appropriately sized, the heel rubbing did not improve with continued wear. After getting sized in a store, I would have to say these are too large for me and I am better suited to 10.5 D in the Aristocraft line, and probably an 11 D in the Melton line, though I am still not entirely satisfied with the fit. I was fitted for an 10EEE Allen Edmonds Park Avenue, which seems to be a different last, but that shoe fit perfectly and was comfortable with minimal breaking in (though at quite a premium). For additional comparison, I wear an 11.5 in Adidas Sambas and typically a 10.5 in Bass Oxfords. The color, finish, etc. are all accurately represented in the photographs and description. The leather was flawless and the stitching all looked good. These are truly a handsome pair of shoes. When they arrived, I wore them around the house for a few hours and then let them rest for a couple of days. They are quite stiff, which is to be expected from a shoe of this quality and construction, and I expect they will take some time to break in properly. My commute to work is a little over half a mile, so I was somewhat apprehensive of wearing them for a full day after minimal breaking in. I did develop a couple of hot spots on the backs of my ankles from rubbing, but applied some self-adhesive bandages, which prevented blistering, and they were otherwise comfortable for the rest of the day. I will try to remember to check back and update after I have had a chance to break them in. All in all, my first impressions are highly favorable and I look forward to their continued use. ... show more

  • Tan = Amazing Black = Terrible
Size: 10 Color: Tan Calfskin
The tan version of this shoe is amazing (order 1/2 size smaller than your tennis shoe). The leather is very high quality and they are so comfortable. The black version uses a different kind of shiny/corrected leather and they are absolutely terrible. Extremely stiff and so uncomfortable I hardly made it through the work day. If Johnston Murphy made these in multiple colors (Black, Dark Brown, Burgundy) with the same high quality leather as the tan version I would buy every color for my wardrobe. But as of right now, the only color with good leather quality is the tan. ... show more

  • Comfort and stylish
Size: 12 Color: Black Calfskin
I had a recent wedding and while I should have broken them in, I was on the dance floor for an hour without any discomfort.

  • decent shoe; hope to find a better one
Size: 10.5 Color: Black Calfskin
I recently graduated college and decided to buy some decent dress shoes after years of cheap JCPenney and Kohl's versions. Note: I wear the shoes slightly less often than one a month. My job doesn't require dress shoes, so I wear them to funerals, weddings, nice events, and work (sometimes). Look: These shoes have the nice visual design I like - classy but not too classy. The leather is so shiny and had so few scuff marks compared with previous shoes I've owned that I've never had to shine them in 18 months and several people have asked if they're patent leather (they're not, right??). Sizing: I started by ordering a size 12 because that's the size that usually fits me in all brands, and the listing says these shoes run true to size. 12 was too big, so I ordered 11.5....then 11.... then finally ended up at 10.5. Other reviewers have mentioned that the sizing is inconsistent, so maybe this means not all the sizes are way too large? Quality: pretty good. About 18 months later the shoes still look pretty similar to when I bought them. However, the break-in period is brutal as others says - I still wouldn't say the shoes are *comfortable* even 18 months in - they're just ok. ... show more

  • Very heavy, painful, sole fell to pieces after two normal wearings
Size: 11 Color: Black Calfskin
I bought a pair of J & M Melton Oxfords about 10 years ago, and they held together quite well for all those years. These are the same shoes in name only. I have no idea what happened to the quality of these shoes, but I would not recommend these shoes to anyone, especially not for $175. These shoes are not even worth $70. Why? After two normal wearings, the sole of these shoes started to shred away. The sole area by the toe started to grind to nothing after only a few hours of wear; same thing with the sole. It's like the sole was made from paper, not a sturdy rubber or similar material. This is not too mention that the soles on both shoes were originally deformed and had deep gashes by the heel area right out of the box. This was an unhappy discovery, but I was willing to forgive this deformity, given that I took a chance ordering shoes online, and the color of the sole is very black so it would not be that noticeable to others. But seeing my shoes being ground to nothing after two wearings - the kind of wear and tear one usually notices after a year of regular use, is really shocking. In fact, I can say I've never experienced a shabbier sole on a shoe in all my life. The rest of the shoe was okay looking, but very hard, heavy and uncomfortable. In fairness, the past J & M Melton Oxford that I bought also took many months, even a year to finally become comfortable to wear. I am quite surprised to see the positive reviews for this same shoe, and wonder how these other customers did not experience the same falling apart that I did. Maybe my pair was particularly defective, though I doubt it. I will have to look for a new shoe that is nice looking and reasonably priced, though I'm afraid that is just a fantasy. I may have to start shelling out $300 for decent looking shoes. Oh well. ... show more
