I decided to buy this fax machine for my office based on the price and functionality. I work at a college where the faculty can often have a hard time using simple equipment, I think their brains are wired more towards higher level tasks. This fax machine is the first they have not broken in their attempt to use it. The controls are very easy to use and intuitive. I have had a few people send blank faxes because they did not realize that the paper needed to be face up, but that was easily fixed with a p-touch label saying "face up please" :) This machine is also very quiet which is important because it sits right outside my door all day. Our previous machine used to beep all day for some unknown reason and we were never able to get it to stop. This machine only makes minimal noise when it is actually printing. I also appreciate the fact that the buttons are big and color coded. This makes it much easier for my office to use. The prints are clear and the toner seems to last a very long time. We receive "spam" faxes pretty much every day (about 2 or 3 pages per day) and actual faxes maybe once a week. At this level of use we replace the toner maybe once a year. AFTER I BOUGHT THE FAX MACHINE FROM HARD TO FIND ELECTRONICS AND RECEIVED IT, I REALIZED i DID NOT NEED IT. I WAS VERY BUSY WITH MY BUSINESS ...AND BY THE TIME I DECIDED TO RETURN THE FAX MACHINE,,,MORE THAN 5 MONTHS HAD ELAPSED. AMAZON HAS A 30 DAY RETURN POLICY. I CONTACTED HARD TO FIND ELECTRONICS. This was a replacement of the previous version of this machine. The problem with the old one is that after several years of office use, in an office with about 8 people, it recorded a problem that could not be cleared which may have been related to the drum, but it was unclear from talking to Brother's tech support. What was clear is that for a little more than the cost of replacing the drum, which might not have solved the problem, we could replace the whole machine. In the interim, we tried using an HP professional all in one printer, color copier and color fax (model L7780). That was a nightmare, as it was slow and had one of the worst paper feeders on the scanner that I have ever seen. What a relief to get this Brother 4100e fax machine back. I thought that this item was an inkjet but found out that its a laser. The performance of this product so far is excellent. The fax performs at light speed compared to my old Brother inkjet fax. For the price this product is a good choice for small businesses. I use this product about every two days and like the ease of how to set it up. I purchased the 4100e nearly three months ago for my business, and I can't think of one bad thing to say about it except for the delay in printing when it's waking from sleep. I have an HP 2300 printer attached to my home computer and I'd gotten used to a quick response time when submitting a print job. I use the print, fax, and copy functions and I'm extremely pleased with the resolution and quality of each. If you need a heavy duty copier, then, well, I guess you wouldn't be looking at this machine, but it suits my needs for a fax machine, printer, and occasional copier for jobs numbering 10-15 pages each. ... show more

I learned the hard way with this machine that it's the cheap man who pays twice. I bought this fax based on price thinking one fax is as good as the next. Not so. In my opinion this is not a machine for business use because it can't be trusted to send more than 2 or 3 pages at a time. The automatic document feeder, which I've learned is really what distinguishes a home fax from a business one, is incapable of separating a stack of papers and just sends them through the machine in a jumble. The problem is that unless you've counted the pages, you'll get a report saying the fax went through just fine, when in fact it sent half of what you thought went through. Unless you stand there and watch the pages go through, you won't realize that it didn't sent the critical 30 page fax you wanted it to, but 24 of them. I'm going to buy a new machine based on the rating of the adf from this point on and hope I don't have a problem returning this one to Amazon ... show more

I have just purchased my second one of these, after owning an identical model for the last six years. The old machine is still functioning, but is clearly getting ready to retire soon. I was delighted to see that this model is still being made by Brother, and did not hesitate to purchase another. The old machine has printed literally thousands upon thousands (very possibly hundreds of thousands) of great quality pages, being used everyday in a busy office environment. The quality of print is very consistent. It has also been used extensively as a fax machine, with zero problems. The punishment that this machine can take is quite amazing, and I love the way that it hooks up easily to my PC via USB. I absolutely would not hesitate to recommend this product.
