  • Exact match
Exact as on the Square site. Flawless integration with a Square account and Faire. As a small business owner I appreciated the speed in which it was received. Functions perfectly and came with USB extender.

  • Same Old Hardware, New Price Tag
The hardware is essentially identical to the previous generation, with only a few subtle differences: slightly different button placement, an added onboard speaker on the seller’s terminal, and the complete removal of the magnetic stripe (swipe) reader on the customer-facing terminal. This makes gift cards impossible to swipe unless you buy extra hardware or manually key in every card — which is especially confusing because the customer screen still prompts users to swipe their gift card. Apart from that, there are noticeable screen issues. At maximum brightness, the seller’s terminal appears dimmer than the 1st-gen Version 2 register. The background user interface also shows rapid flickering during the intentional fade to 50% opacity when the charge or receipt screen appears in the foreground. After nearly 10 years since the original Square register, there are basically zero new features and virtually no meaningful improvements. Why are we still using cheap LCD screens in 2026? An OLED or AMOLED display would be a simple upgrade — especially on the customer terminal, where many businesses prefer a black background with their logo on the idle screen so the screen edges aren’t visible. The same could be said for the seller’s terminal: an OLED or AMOLED screen with an optional “dark mode” would make the experience feel very modern and futuristic, giving both terminals a near-bezel-less look. I cannot justify the upgrade. The hardware is virtually identical, the color temperatures on the customer display don’t even match (the “dip” prompt is cooler daylight white, while the “tap” prompt is warmer natural light), and the attention to detail is lacking even for the handful of minor changes they did make. I know it sounds like nitpicking, but literally nothing has changed. The point is, what has changed wasn’t even done with any care or regard for quality or detail. The few changes that were made were aesthetic or unnecessary and they didn’t even look good. Good luck finding a screen protector for the customer terminal either — none are available yet. In short, this new register is identical to the Gen 1 Version 2 model. I would not recommend paying $300 more for it. Buy the cheaper Gen 1 Version 2 instead and save the money for your business. Major software updates aren’t expected for at least another year or two anyway. The press release tells you everything: it’s full of fluff, and the only selling points Square could muster are “more splash resistant” and “faster.” Nothing has actually changed. They tout improved compute power as the main advantage, but I didn’t notice any meaningful speed difference once booted and operating. The customer terminal’s hardware clearly hasn’t been upgraded at all — when booting from a full shutdown, the seller’s terminal is ready in 20–30 seconds, while the customer terminal lags by 2–3 full minutes before it can accept payments. That boot time for the customer terminal exactly matches the Gen 1 Version 2 hardware. If you’re a sucker for wanting “the newest, shiniest thing” just because it costs more and is newer, then this is the product for you. I’m sure in the future the Gen 2 register will receive "cool" priority OS updates and sleek new UI designs to get people to transition over. But for all commercial purposes, everything will remain exactly the same as it has been — which is good for commerce. At the same time, some hardware and aesthetic updates could have easily been done to improve what is supposed to be Square’s flagship product. It’s genuinely disappointing. After more than a decade, virtually nothing has changed. In my opinion, this is a total miss. ———— TLDR: Commerce will be changing in the near future in ways that others can't imagine. Square had an opportunity to be revolutionary and create something new, yet functional and practical. Instead, they opted to virtually clone an old product and release it as new, asking for more money, when the Gen 1 alternative is nearly identical. ... show more

  • Sturdy Register, Better for Permanent Use Than Markets
This Square Register works well and feels very sturdy, but it is definitely on the pricey side. Setup was straightforward, and it linked to the account without any issues. Once connected, it functions smoothly with the Square POS system and gives a more professional checkout experience. The build quality is one of the stronger points. It feels solid and stable, and the customer-facing display is a nice feature for a counter setup. For a permanent retail location, bakery counter, coffee shop, or small storefront, this would be a very good option because it looks clean and is built for regular use. That said, I do not think it is the best fit for a farmers market or temporary/mobile setup. It is more bulky and expensive than what you really need if you are setting up and tearing down often. For that kind of use, a smaller Square reader or tablet setup may be more practical. Overall, I’d give this 4 stars. It is well made, easy to connect, and works as expected, but the price and size make it better suited for a permanent installation than a portable market setup. ... show more
