  • What an Upgrade!
Color: black truffle
I have had, used, and loved my Breville Creatista Plus using Nespresso pods for about 7 years. The machine still functioned well, but it was just starting to slow down. I had been waiting for an excuse to upgrade, got a raise at work, and decided to treat myself to a new machine. Boy, am I glad I did. I was deciding between the regular Impress and the Touch Impress. The Touch seemed to have a few upgrade, grinder, milkIQ thing, ease of use, better heating system, that I decided to pay the higher price. I am sure the Impress is an awesome machine, based on my Touch. The Touch, however, it out of this world. It took two times to get dialed in, and in less than 10 minutes, I tasted a better flat white than anything I had ever had. Sure, a lot had to do with the beans, but this machine is AMAZING. Easy set up, like super easy. Put beans in, figure out your grind size, hit the button, tamp it, put the portofiler in, push. the button, put the pitcher with milk under the frother, and done. Next day, made my normal morning mocha. first time, used half the mocha I did with my Nespresso, and it was a top 5 mocha I have ever had. For context, any city I visit, I search for the best rated coffee house. Starbucks is a last resort. I have had great coffee in many places. This machine matches any of them. The only one I know was better was at Palo on a Disney Cruise. My daughter came home from college. Made her a vanilla latte. Said it was the best she has ever had. The level this machine produces espresso and other beverages is so far above most chain coffee shops, and equals the smaller mom and pop boutique coffee shops I love. Even now, I am sitter here drinking the best salted caramel mocha, it is fall after all, I have ever had. Made my wife an americano, her favorite drink. She LOVED it. Easy to use, makes you look like a coffee genius, and looks pretty good in the kitchen. Not even worth mentioning how much of an upgrade it is over my Nespresso, which was a great machine. This machine is everything I hoped and more. For context, I used Koffee Kult beans, which can be found on Amazon. Best beans you will find. Update-It has been 6 weeks and wanted to give a quick update. First, this machine only gets better. I have heard people downplay the milk technology. To me, this is a great feature. Who knew, I didn't, that oat milk gets bitter at 150 degrees? Well Breville did. As you learn more, like using the tap lever twice as some online reviews suggest, produces a cleaner puck. Their different temps make a difference in the quality of the milk, regardless of kind. The machine is pretty clean, but you will find grinds slipping out every now and then. Not a big deal, but trying to keep it real. Something that might frustrate people, but it is the result of fresh beans, not the machine, is dialing in the grind and length of the shot does fluctuate a little. A 12 grind produces 26 second pulls one time, and maybe 23 seconds the next day. Not a big deal to me, but to perfectionists, might be a worry. Again, not the machine, but I believe it is the natural variance of fresh beans. I read a lot of complaints about the grinder. I don't know act people are expecting, but it is a grinder. I think it is surprisingly quiet. Maybe it is because I saw people write about it, but I was quite pleased with the grinder. The machine heats up quickly. It takes about 25-30 seconds to pull a shot. The milk frothing is fairly quick. My daughter went to breakfast the other day. She got a dunkin with her friends. She came home and asked me to make her something, the dunkin didn't taste good. That is my one warning, you can make amazing espresso drinks with this machine. It will change your palette. When I have meetings at Starbucks now, instead of something I look forward to, it is more ok, I will deal with spending $6 on a very average cup of coffee. This machine is expensive, but much less than some. I am not sure you can produce a better espresso shot. I know I haven't found better in even the best coffee shops. ... show more

  • Great idea terribly implemented. Must recalibrate grind and dose settings every use. Wasteful.
Color: Brushed Stainless Steel
Consistency. That's what I expect from a good espresso machine. At 66yrs old, this was my 5th espresso machine in the $1000 + price range. Most of my other machines, all super-automatics, lasted a minimum of 10 years. My Jura J9 lasted 10 years and was still making quality espresso when I sold it. I had a Spinn after that. Good espresso, horrible machine. I decided to upgrade to the Breville as the idea seemed genius. And it is. It's just too bad that Breville cut corners and decided to go ahead and market a machine that wasn't really ready. I really loved every concept about this machine. Great quality grinder, auto-dose, PID controlled heat block and extraction pressure. All things that would have made this a fantastic machine, all poorly implemented. To achieve a quality espresso, one must use freshly roasted beans. I buy mine from Onyx and have never had an issue with any of my other machines using their beans. I am a retired engineer, so I take pleasure in things like setting up, calibrating and testing, all which I did meticulously with this machine using coffee scales, weighing doses and timing shots. Every day it required re-calibrating the grind setting, only to have it return to the previous days setting after wasting 60g of very expensive coffee. Once re-re-calibrated, it would make consistent shots until the next time you turned the machine on. Then it was reset grind setting, dose, waste more beans and time to finally achieve a decent shot. Keeping this machine would have been very expensive and time consuming. It would be less expensive to drive to my favorite coffee shop and have a barista make my coffee every morning. Pros: Genius idea and concept. Really everything I wanted in an espresso machine. Heats up quickly. Quiet. Cons: Poorly built product. Doesn't work as advertised. Will not produce consistent shots until full re-calibration of dose and grind Extremely wasteful. I read literally all of the nearly 400 reviews on this site and knew I was taking a chance with this purchase. I did not experience any actual machine failures as others have, specifically machine turning off during frothing, low temperatures, solenoid valve failures, error codes or the dreaded failure to power on issues, but given my experience and all of the negative reviews on build quality I could never recommend this machine. Oh Breville. Such a wonderful concept, and if anyone could have pulled it off, you could. It was your reputation that got me to buy. It was a poorly designed product that made me return it to you. I shall look elsewhere as now I don't trust Breville. ... show more

  • well worth the investment
Color: Noir
The best coffee I've ever had. Better than Starbucks, which I really like very much. This is a great machine if you love great coffee and you love the process. There is a process so be prepared. It takes a few minutes to make a cup of coffee, but it's worth it. Also worth noting if you heat your cup in advance with warm water before making your coffee, it will not shock the coffee so much any thereby eliminating a large portion of the bitterness we sometimes taste in coffee take your time. Follow the instructions wonderful machine. It's a little big on the counter. Make sure you have space. ... show more

  • BEST No Thinking Required Espresso Machine!
Color: black truffle
I had my previous Breville espresso machine for 10 years and I used it every single day. We replaced some rubber gaskets in it a few times but other than that - it outlasted every machine. But I was tired of trying to guess the right amount of coffee grinds to put in there and the right tightness it should be and getting it wrong and having to redo it sometimes. I was also tired of making a mess with grindings everywhere. And the sound of the milk frother was seriously ear piercing. I decided I wanted a fully automatic no-thinking-required machine so I got a Delonghi Rivelia. Supposed to push a button and it froths the milk and pours it in the mug for you. HATED it. Espresso would not brew strong enough. Very weak. Tried many different beans many different settings. Not consistent results. So I returned it. I went back to old faithful - Breville to see what new machines they had. THIS MACHINE IS AN AMAZING UPGRADE!!! While It doesn’t pour the milk in the cup for you…it’s still a no-thinking-required machine. Push the button, pull the handle to tamp, the machine learns exactly how much to grind. You don’t even see the grindings come out it’s all enclosed. No more mess, no more guessing how much coffee to put in. No more ear piercing milk frother. I don’t even hold the milk cup or have to tilt it at an angle I just set it there and it does it all! There was foam on the top of the milk before it was even hot! And you can set the temp you want your milk to get to. And set the amount of foam you like. Soooo simple! I cannot say enough about how much I love this thing. Totally worth the $$ for me. I never need to spend money at coffee shops, I have professional quality lattes at home! ... show more

  • Great machine
Color: Brushed Stainless Steel
Easy cleaning and set up. Good quality. Heats espresso and milk very well. Easy to follow instructions and videos. Very happy with the purchase. I would recommend. Update after a few months of use: Love, love, love it! Heats up quickly and gets coffee as hot as coffee shop. I get a better latte at home than from coffee shop. Will pay for itself in a few months. Easy to follow instructions. It guides you to make sure you have the correct amount of coffee for the perfect puck size. You can adjust temperature by precise degree of temperature. Froths milk perfectly. Heats up quickly with no need to run until it heats up. Hot right from the start. It also guides you through grind selection based on how fast the water flows through puck. Makes it simple and very quick. If you’re looking for a good quality unit, this is the one. ... show more

  • Great machine (when it works)… TERRIBLE customer services for a premium priced product
Color: Brushed Stainless Steel
First, let me start with the positives… we loved this machine for the first 10 months (when it worked). The espresso was great, the machine is easy to use and produced consistently high quality results. As a bonus, it was a wonderful hospitality option to treat our guests. These positives were awesome and ultimately why I still give this two stars. Unfortunately, our machine suddenly stopped turning on (blank screen… no obvious reason) about three weeks ago, and our Breville story has turned into a customer service nightmare since that time. First it takes a lot of time to work your way through their glitchy call in system. They clearly use an international call center which led to a difficult communication environment to start with. What should’ve been the easiest part (Shipping back the product which was thankfully still under warranty) was NOT, as we were given INCORRECT instructions at the beginning (said they would send a shipping box in 2-3 days, only to receive a call three days later saying they didn’t have shipping boxes and we would need to take care of this ourselves). When we finally did get the machine shipped at UPS, it took over one week for them to receive the machine at their warehouse. It then took almost A WEEK just to confirm what we already knew - the machine didn’t turn on… but Breville customer service didn't communicate the results directly to us. We received a very short and confusing email essentially saying “our order was back ordered and wouldn’t ship for 1-3 weeks at the soonest. Upon again braving the call in center labyrinth, I found out the details including the incomprehensible statement that the stainless steel model we owned wasn’t available (note: checked Amazon and it could deliver one to us in 1 day) but they did have other colors. Upon me telling them I’d take other colors, they said we’d hear back shortly… but now over 24 hours later, I AGAIN called only to hear that 1. “The warehouse hasn’t responded yet and there’s nothing the rep can do to expedite” and 2. Upon requesting a supervisor to lay out the frustrating customer service facts of the last several weeks, they said “we can only put you in a queue to speak with a supervisor and it will take 24-48 hours”. After all this, all the positive good will Breville build over 10 months has been eroded in weeks. For a $1,500+tax premium consumer product, I’m horrible disappointed by this experience. Hopefully we’ll get a machine soon… Will update this post if anything materially changes. ... show more

  • Excellent machine
Color: Brushed Stainless Steel
Great machine, and very easy to use once you get the grind settings dialed in. There's a walkthrough in the setup menu for doing just that. The sweet spot for the grind setting and time will vary depending on the beans used. So you'll likely need to make adjustments when using a new batch of beans. Early on, you'll likely be prompted to grind a bit more one or two times after tamping, but the machine does learn quickly and adjust the grind level so eventually it will hit the target nearly all of the time. The self-purging feature on the steaming wand is a gift from the gods, and there's a very handy storage tray to hold brushes and filter baskets that fits behind the drip tray, which itself has a nice roomy capacity. It's great not to be constantly emptying the drip tray. A few minor things worth knowing: In the pre-set drink menus, there's no indication of the amount of milk to use. The milk pitcher has minimum and maximum levels marked, but it's left up to the user to decide how much to use. The minimum mark is about 4 ounces, more than needed for some drinks. Smaller amounts can be done manually. When filling the water reservoir, the max level is quite high, so water can slosh out if you aren't very careful when carrying it by the handle. It's also a bit cramped for normal size hands when you're washing it before initial use as the manual recommends or inserting/replacing the filter cartridge. The lid gets in the way and I see no way to completely remove it. During the grind calibration process, the puck did sometimes stick to the group head when using the double-walled baskets. All in all, very happy with this machine. For the price, I certainly hope it proves reliable. ... show more

  • Well built, easy to use but not for me
Color: Brushed Stainless Steel
I had high hopes for this espresso machine after trying a super automatic espresso machine from another manufacturer. This espresso machine comes extremely well packaged with easy to read setup instructions. It is ready for use within seconds of turning it on. It takes about 5 - 10 minutes to complete the initial priming and setup but after that it's ready to go. I tried a number of different drinks including latte, cappuccino and americano in both single and double shot modes. The grinder worked well. Adjusting the settings was a breeze with the built in touch screen. Saving custom drinks was easy and straightforward. The frothing wand worked very well; especially the built in temperature sensor that gets the milk and froth to the exact temperature you set. So with all these positives, why did this espresso machine not fully meet my expectations? Firstly, steaming and frothing plant based milk never really worked out for me. Despite trying a variety of almond, oat, coconut and barista style plant based milks, I never good get a good froth. Yes, it heats up the milk just fine and creates some froth; just not to my expectations. Second, while the Impress auto tamping system worked very well, it always seemed a bit off. The included razor tool was helpful in removing excess coffee and if the grind was a bit short, it would prompt to grind a little additional. But in the end, for me, this always turned out to be an inconsistent process. In the end, "the juice wasn't worth the squeeze", as I like to say. The machine is fantastic. It works as advertised but there are too nuanced elements for me to make this worthwhile for me at home. It seems that you need just the right coffee beans, just the right kind of milk and just the right kind of technique to make a coffee shop quality home brewed espresso drink. Personally, I was too frustrated with all the details required and disappointed with the results. I'll continue with my drip coffee routine at home and visit a local coffee shop when I long for an espresso based drink. ... show more
