Frequently asked questions

The Braun Silk Expert Pro5 uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology to target hair follicles, reducing hair growth by emitting gentle light pulses. The light is absorbed by the melanin in the hair, which then heats up and damages the follicle, leading to less hair growth over time. It's a safe and virtually painless method compared to traditional salon laser treatments.

Yes, the Braun Silk Expert Pro5 is designed for both women and men. It's versatile and can be used on a range of body parts, including the face, legs, arms, underarms, and bikini line. However, effectiveness can vary depending on individual hair and skin types.

Results vary by individual, but many users start to see a noticeable reduction in hair regrowth after just 4 weeks of using the Braun Silk Expert Pro5, with optimum results typically seen after 12 weeks of regular use. To maintain results, use the device every 1-2 months or as needed.

The Braun Silk Expert Pro5 is effective on a wide range of hair and skin types, but works best on individuals with darker hair and lighter skin tones, as IPL technology targets the melanin in the hair. It's not recommended for very dark skin or very light hair, including grey, red, or white, where IPL might be less effective or not recommended due to safety concerns.

It is highlighted for its less painful experience compared to salon laser treatments and its capability to treat large areas quickly with a continuous mode feature.

  • 🔸 Effective in reducing hair growth with marked results after a few sessions
  • 🔹 Less painful than professional salon laser treatments
  • 🔸 Comes with two heads and a continuous mode for efficient large area treatment
  • 🔹 Suitable for various body parts, including sensitive Brazilian areas
  • 🔸 Includes a useful skin color chart to gauge suitability

Cons

  • 🚫 Requires proper skin/hair contrast for optimal effectiveness
  • 🚫 Some users may need multiple sessions for significant results
  • 🚫 Can be challenging to use on darker skin tones without adjustment

Should I Buy It?

If you are looking for a home solution to hair removal that is less painful and potentially more cost-effective than salon treatments, this device seems to be a strong candidate. Given its general effectiveness across a range of users and body areas, it's worth considering if you have the right skin/hair contrast. Keep in mind, though, results may vary and patience is required for significant outcomes.

  • Easy to use, does not cause much discomfort (for me), one+ month update below
Style: PL5137
I have read so many reviews and wanted to know a few key things-- so here it is on topics of: pain and can it do Brazilian. (I have only had it a week so cannot comment on efficacy yet, but by reading all the reviews, it seems like it works great for some people fast, great for some people slowly, and others, it just doesn't do great. Some ppl seem to give up if it does not work after 4 weeks, or if it shows reduction but not complete removal--go longer!!) [One month update below] So pain, for me: It does not hurt very much. I am using it on under arms which have little hair left post laser about 5 years ago. Also for every part of bikini/brazilian locations, it is mild discomfort, and fast. For me the sensation is like when you open a really hot oven and the air hits you, it is a hot hot air feeling in a small concentrated spot. There is a *slight* sting sensation where the follicles are, but it is hard to really tell what is going on. It lasts so briefly that it is not bad. I think that the more discomfort I get is from where the hair is longer, I think the long hair kind of burns up and gets hot and touches the skin. Sometimes where skin pigment is darker the sensor does not want to flash, but repositioning it will eventually figure it out. Skin pigment difference matter if you are interested in brazilian locations. Deeper skin tones down there may not flash. It is MUCH MUCH less painful than salon laser. I had a really hard time with salon laser pain on legs, underarms and just basic inner thigh type bikini line. This is worlds better. I do not have to steel myself for this, it is not stressful. My legs have very little hair left so going over them is pain free and fast. My skin is not that sensitive to this device, and if I go over a spot twice there is no after effect or burn. I try not to just in case it sensitizes over time. The most awkward part for me has been contorting to get the sensor flat on the skin, especially for bikini. I recommend getting a pari of dark sunglasses and wearing them while you use it. Gas station/supermarket wrap arounds with black lenses were what I bought. The light is super bright, and comes through closed eye lids. If you get migraines it may trigger one bc the light is super bright, and the rhythmic flashing may just bother you. If you have sensitive eyes to bright light, wear dark glasses. I wear them and turn away, or just put a hand over my eyes if it is not a lot of contortion to hold the device and press the button. One month update: I love this device. I use it more than once a week, I am impatient and have zero effects on my skin after using, no damage or burning. I do not rec doing this, just what I did. Progress with Brazilian areas has been going well. One month+ in and I now have experienced hairs falling out in parts of the brazilian area, leaving entirely hairless smooth areas behind. I have never had this level of hairlessness even with waxing years ago. Not all areas respond the same. Some still have clear regrowth with stubble typical of post shaving. I think i am a strong responder, and I was to laser as well. Underarms have no regrowth a month in, for the few hairs that were left post laser 5 years ago. Legs same. I randomly run it over thighs and have less hair, which was sparse post laser to begin with, plus I am older and have less hair than when young. I no longer feel as strong a need to wear sunglasses, and doing it in a bright room in day both helps me see all the hairs, and also lessens contrast so the light flash is less strong feeling. I feel zero apprehension doing this in brazilian area, minimal pain if there is a close shave. The razor that came with it is ridiculously good, and I ordered more blades. The main issue with Brazilian locations is contorting to angle the device to get all the spots. I get a little lazy and focus on easier spots. I highly recommend this to people with the right skin/hair contrast to work (see chart for hair/skin shades). I find it faster than laser, bc you don't need to wait many weeks between. It remains way less painful than laser, which was very painful for me. I feel like a salesperson for the device, it is so cool!!! ... show more

  • Honest review please read! Really does work!
Style: PL5137
Absolutely wonderful product but please follow the directions on how it’s works because it’s not for everybody or every skin type. These photos are actually of my best friends bikini line and were taken at the 6 week mark. (Lost my own photos that were on my old phone, so I got consent to use hers) However, I’ve been using this device on and off for 4 years and swear by it! *Follow directions! Most of the bad reviews I see on here are from people who either aren’t following directions or giving it enough time to work. The process takes 12 WEEKS but you will begin to see results within a month or less. After 12 weeks you use it as needed. Also just like professional LHR your hair will most likely NOT be permanently gone but I found with this device that my hair that does grow back is much much thinner, takes a long time to come back in, and I rarely have to shave. My skin is so smooth and clear! It also works best where there’s a high contrast and thicker hair. I have a light olive skin tone and dark hair so this product works especially well for me. My friend is very fair with light brown to blondish hair and has extremelyyyyyy sensitive skin especially after shaving which is why i recommended she buy this. She gets absolutely terrible razor bumps and breaks out all over but since using the device she has little to no breakouts because the follicles aren’t getting clogged. ALSO if you have a lot of beauty marks, dark freckles, or tattoos DO NOT use the device over those areas because you will get burned. I see some reviews saying their moles got burnt and that they are tossing the device because of that. Also if you can handle the full power level that’s best AND you need to go over the area a few times and not just once. You WILL have some discomfort especially in more sensitive areas but just stick with it and stop using it if it’s absolutely unbearable or causing harm to your skin. Please make sure you are fully shaved and exfoliated because the device WILL burn/zap you if it catches a long hair or flakey skin. Also make sure your skin is dry and clean with no products on. And if you tan easily in the summer the device might not work in the darker areas (ex. My lower half get extremely tan in the summer and the device doesn’t work when my skin is super dark) With that said, obviously at home LHR isn’t for everyone and they should seek professional help if they have a reaction to the device. When I first began looking for an at home LHR device I had trouble finding honest reviews that show actual results because most brands sponsor “influencers” who have already had professional LHR and just say “it works.” (Ex. The Kenzie device) When I found this product a few years ago there were barely any reviews back then so I was skeptical. Anyways, I dug deep and found random normal people on YouTube (unsponsored with little to no views) posting their honest review and photos showing their results which is how I decided on this device. Totally worth the money! Stick with it! ... show more

  • Game-changer! It worked, when NOTHING else did.
Style: PL5137
I've had this for half a year now, and I am still in shock about how effective it is. It worked!! My hair growth noticeably slowed down after the first couple of treatments. And I've been able to get rid of armpit hair completely, and got rid of about 98% of my leg hair, and about 90% of hair *down there.* And I have ZERO ingrown hair now, and my skin is smooth like silk. Still can't believe it! Nothing has ever worked for me, and I mean NOTHING. I don't even have that much hair in unwanted places on my body, but the hair I do have tends to be very persistent. And, coupled with VERY sensitive skin, any method of hair removal I've ever tried had more negative side effects than positive results, and the positive outcomes never lasted. I waxed for many years. That was the best solution for me because it gave me the smoothest skin on my legs. But it didn't catch everything. And it never reduced my hair growth to such a level as you often see in ads: a few days later, I had to wax again. I even went to the salon to wax my armpits and *down there* but that hurt like hell, and the results never lasted more than a few days. However, waxing was my preferred method for years because it at least gave me a few days of peace and smooth skin. Kind of. With ingrown hairs here and there. I used wax strips for that. I tried waxing beads that you're supposed to melt. That was a total waste of money. Regular shaving would normally give me the smoothest skin for a few hours. By the end of the day, it would be a little prickly. And I would get ingrowns no matter how much I exfoliated. I've even tried actual LASER, in a salon. Wasted all of that money. It hurt, it cost a fortune, and my hair growth got temporarily reduced, but then it came back after what was supposed to be my last treatment. They told me at the salon that some people have a reverse reaction from laser, and the only solution is to get more treatments. But I didn't have the budget for that. I ended up buying a different IPL machine before I got Braun. It was cheaper. One of those viral ones. Total crap. Don't waste your money. It's too weak to do anything. Took me a full year of trying to recognize that it would never ever work on me. But then I got this magical tool from Braun. Well, first things first: it will hurt. It is an actual IPL, not just some flashlight pretending to be an IPL from a cheap knock-off brand. It WILL do its job, and you might have to do the lowest setting at the beginning because it will hurt. But you will practically feel the roots of your follicles getting destroyed. My ingrown hairs disappeared after the very first treatment. My hair began growing slower after the second treatment. About two weeks into it, my hair growth almost completely stopped. Six months into it, I occasionally need to do a minor touch-up here and there, I think mainly because the remaining hairs are so thin and light that the IPL just doesn't "see" them, so they reappear once in a while. But when they do, it's nearly impossible to see. It's like fuzz, not even hair. The worst area of my body that I previously could never look smooth were my armpits. Even when freshly shaven, they'd look a bit dark. My skin is thin and sensitive there, and so I could never make it look nice and smooth. Waxing wouldn't get rid of the hair for more than a few days. It was hell. But this IPL machine worked!! I have ZERO hair in my armpits, and the skin finally had a chance to heal, so my pits look smooth, light, and clean. The hardest area to IPL is *down there.* Even with a special precision attachment, it's kind of difficult to reach, because frankly the only downside of this IPL is its design. You have to constantly press the button, or hold it down, and it's situated in such a way that makes it uncomfortable to hold when you're trying to do your south region. But it's doable if you're squatting or sitting at the edge of a chair or couch. I find that even after six months, I can't seem to get rid of ALL the hair down there--probably because the follicles tend to be rooted a lot deeper in that region, so the roots of the hairs are harder to reach with IPL. However, I've done a full Brazilian with this tool, and my bikini area is completely hair-free--I mean ZERO hair in the bikini area. Only a little bit of remaining hair way down below. But it is a lot thinner and lighter, and grows a lot slower. TLDR: This is a fantastic machine that works, and it has worked for me even though another (cheaper) IPL never did, and even professional laser treatments didn't work for me. But this thing worked. ... show more

  • Decent, More Affordable Option than Professional IPL
Style: PL5137
I have been using this hair remover since December (it was a Christmas gift to myself). It's now June and I started using it 2-3 times per week rather than weekly. I used it on my legs, bikini area, armpits and chin. On my legs, the hair is not gone, but I now shave once per week rather than daily. For armpits, the hair isn't gone and I could shave once per week. The bikini area has been a process and after a month of regular treatment, I don't know if it's worth continuing as I haven't noticed much of a reduction at all. My chin is also another area that doesn't seem to be responding and that is only like 3 hairs I would love to have disappear! I think this is a good product but not great. If it didn't auto adjust the sensitivity or I had the option to override it, that would be amazing! I'm still using this laser hair remover twice per month to maintain my legs. I don't know if I could switch to once per month as it says in the instructions. I purchased this product in hopes it would work like a professional laser hair removal and it's not that, but it's a good more affordable option. I haven't tried any other products before, so I'm not sure this is the best option but it's decent. ... show more

  • Sort of "working" but not really
Style: PL5137
This does not do as much as it says it will. I've been using for 16+ weeks now. You will see most results in first 2-6 weeks. If you got thin and soft hair that you have not shaved/trimmed, it will work better. If you shaved/trimmed before then hair won't be as thin, and this will work partially. After 12 weeks I was hoping to see improvements, but that was not the case. You will still need to shave once a week or get used to hearing "you missed a spot" as some hair will grow back to full length and rest will be a "needle field" with some "smooth" patches. Basically if you use this and shave once a week it will be partly smooth and part needle works galore. It does not help with ingrown hair problem in fact shaving will bring this issue to a more severe state as before this I was using a trimmer to leave very short hair that did not "poke like a needle" but also did not feel like 2n day coarse growth and had no ingrown hair issues. This piece also has some issues at least on larger attachment the mirror part is bent solid piece and where they should connect to each end there is a large gap that probably impacts how things are reflected. You will also find burns (white ash sort of spots on the mirror) after use which I think may be due to reflector not being properly closed with that gap and side of it raised. It also needs to be inspected after each use and cleaned with cotton swab and alcohol as otherwise you will end up with build ups on lens and reflectors. For the price I expected a bit more quality out of this product where it seems they put more work into the case then little details that are around main components. The sensors also seem to be a bit out of wack at times as they won't allow you to activate on pale skin (I'm very white) and at times you feel just warm flash but others it feels like you getting electrocuted. Reading reviews, I figured my shave was not good enough and little hair were the issues, but that is not the case. Smooth shave or short hair seems to have no impact on that I could feel. It's just random and only thing I could find that may related is the white ash stains on the mirror usually means you have some painful flashes which I think is because the mirror was not fully sealed with that gap and slight raise causing the painful flashes. And again clean that thing every time or you will get black stains on yellow lens and they don't come off easy. 2 stars in my view. Edit: Dropping to 1 star. After 18+ weeks no improvement in fact some hair seems to be growing back faster so you have the short and the super long (between 1/4" to 1/2") all in same spot. This does nothing but waste time and money. Wish I could put 0 starts. ... show more

  • Guys... YES, YES, YES! Review after 5 weeks.
Style: PL5137
As a guy who "trims", I have been using the Philips Powergroomer for over a decade. It's fast and effective, but I needed to do it at least twice a week, always had a slight stubble and replacing the blades every 4 months adds up in cost. I stopped shaving eons ago because I get razor burns badly. I have used this device once/week (EVERYWHERE) for a month. The results are AMAZING! I actually shaved today for my weekly "zap session", but almost all of the hair is already gone. I only shaved because I am ready to be done with the weekly process and want each session to be as effective as possible. I had almost zero chest, arm, and leg hair before shaving today. The pubes still need a little more time, but hairs have reduced by about 80% already. This device works on men! I have an average Florida tan (for a white guy) and black hair. I do have a few gray chest hairs. This does not work on gray hair at all. For my first session, I did the Philips "trim" instead of shaving. The entire process smelled like burning hair. The zapping is not pleasant, it gets very hot. I had to take a few breaks before completing the session. After a week I noticed a little improvement, but nothing spectacular. For the second session, I used the Venus razor shipped with the device. Ugh, I knew I was going to get razor burn, but wanted to give this a real try. So, I did a little research on "women's shaving" before hitting the razor. I took a hot 10-minute bath before I started the shave, dried off well, then used the Braun for the second time. The heat from the zapping was more tolerable this time. Immediately after the zapping, I applied cortisone cream where I always get razor burns, then used a good collagen body lotion. I developed only VERY MINIMAL razor burn the next day, applied more cortisone, and everything was fine. So, my weekly process is to shave, zap, cortisone, and moisturize. After 5 sessions (once/week) I am extremely pleased with the results. I'll probably continue this process for 2 more sessions, then do it only once every 3 - 4 weeks, or as needed. I have no ingrown hairs, and I doubt I'll get any razor burn after this session. This bad boy works well on men! The instructions say to avoid the sun for at least a week after use. I went to the beach the day after a session and experienced no issues. But the device does work best on lighter skin. So, as a rule, I plan to avoid the sun until I get as "hairless" as possible. The lighter your skin tone, the more powerful and effective the laser will be. I think "the process" is important. Soak, shave, zap, cortisone, then moisturize. The heat gets tolerable (everywhere) with time, but I still take a break and let the device cool down a few times each session. The instructions say it should take about 10 minutes. That is BS! Plan on 30 minutes of zapping. The device is fantastic in that you don't have to keep pressing the button to zap. But it has to be fully flat against your skin. Then you just glide it over your body. Once in a while, the glide and zap function stops working. Just unplug it for a minute, then it works fine again. If you are working on an area where it is difficult to get it flat against your skin (like your knees or shins), just start it up on an easier part of your body like your thighs and it will start working well again. There is a smaller "laser head" for difficult areas, but I can get everywhere with the larger head now after practice. Do not get discouraged after the first use. If you have dark hair, this will work great! I wish I discovered this a decade ago! One of my best Amazon purchases EVER! ... show more

  • Life-Changing Results for Me
Style: PL5137
Not to be over dramatic, but this has honestly been life-changing for me. I have dealt with A LOT of facial hair for nearly 20 years, and after starting testosterone, something I already struggled with became even worse. I had considered scheduling laser hair removal treatments, but I worried it would be a waste of money being on the testosterone, so I decided to try an at-home option first. I spent a lot of time reading reviews before choosing one, and while this was more expensive than I originally wanted to spend, I reminded myself that compared to driving to appointments and paying for multiple professional sessions, it could still save me money in the long run if it actually worked. Thankfully, it did. I have been using this for about 12 weeks, around 2–3 times a week, mainly on my mustache, chin hair, and underarms. The difference has been amazing. My underarm hair is much thinner, lighter, and slower to grow. I have also used it on my arms, which I have shaved for years, and I have noticed the hair growing back finer, lighter, and much slower there as well. The biggest improvement has been my facial hair. I used to constantly pluck chin hairs and my mustache area, which was time-consuming and often led to ingrown hairs, redness, dark patches, and scarring. Since using this, the thick coarse hairs have dramatically reduced, and the irritation, scabs, and ingrown hairs are gone.! Do I still have some hair growth? Yes. I still shave and continue using it about once a week for maintenance, but the difference has been unreal. The hair is much finer, lighter, and far more manageable. Beyond the physical results, it has also given me more confidence, and that alone has made it worth it. If you are consistent and patient, this has absolutely been worth the investment for me. ... show more

  • Practically a folliculitis cure
Style: PL5137
TLDR: I have had folliculitis for all of my life. This is the best thing I've ever used to treat it. Read further for details Folliculitis is basically extreme ingrown hairs, and for 25+ years I've done my best to treat and deal with it. I have it everywhere that hair grows. Yes, everywhere. I've tried nearly everything in a reasonable price frame. Different shavers/creams/lotions, epilators, waxes, etc - I've even coated all my legs in toothpaste to dry out the infections to show my desperation. You can actually find me reviewing Tend Skin aftershave because it has been the best treatment, thus far, for helping me. It's basically rubbing alcohol, but it's the only thing that works. Before buying this I would say my recent schedule is shaving once a month. I still get ingrown hairs the entire time, but not with the searing pain of shaved legs that feel as if they've been cut by jagged glass. Not shaving at all isn't much different, as hairs shed and regrow I still have this issue with infections from hairs that can't break the top layer of my skin. When I do shave I go through at least 7 disposable shave heads (between how fast they dull and trying to reduce the infection spreading) and it takes well over an hour to do the whole thing. I was scared to try this because of how many infections and sores I deal with regularly. I spent an hour plus shaving a months worth of hair off, and before applying tend skin I went to work with IPL (per instruction), I used this product. It wasn't that hard to get the hang of tbh, keeping it flat and also not pressing into the skin really helps. Throughout the whole thing it didn't hurt in the slightest, but I had one tiny birthmark that it stung a little (not the beauty marks tho so that's weird), and I avoided my ankle tattoo altogether. I'm not sure why, but my skin felt better after the treatment than it does applying tend skin (aftershave). It felt relaxed and unirratated for once. I mean, when I shaved my legs they had that "jagged glass was here" feel, but after using the IPL, it didn't have that. In fact, I had to remind myself to not get careless and I should use tend skin for the long term effects, it gave me a false sense of comfort. I've been using this for well over a month now with beyond amazing results. Before shaving would take an hour plus and at least 7 shaver heads. Now it takes less than 20 minutes and 2 heads. I can complete the entire IPL process in less amount of time than I spent just shaving alone a year ago. I want to stress something. There has been one time in the last 10 years that I shaved within a week, and it caused so much pain and I have pictures showing how badly it hurt (the worst ever). Since I started IPL - I have been shaving once a week and have had the best results on my legs *ever*. I still get sores occasionally but not nearly in comparison. It is crazy to me how slowly, or not at all, the hairs have grown in since I started this. My bikini line is nearly non-existant. I'm not even on week 12, I'm on week 6 maybe? I have never once in my life had "smooth skin". It's always been tacky stubble, even after a fresh shave. Not now. I have --- days later --- skin completely devoid of hair and soft and smooth. It's honestly the first time ever for me. Seriously at 40, this is the first time for me. Even if this treatment didn't permanently remove hair, that doesn't matter that much to me. What it has done for me thus far is literally LIFE CHANGING - and I don't use that term ever. I could use this once a week while shaving my legs and even if it never stops hair from growing in it permanently, what it does inhibit would be an improvement for me - but thankfully it does deliver on stopping hair growth as well. ... show more
