Frequently asked questions

The Braun Silk Expert Pro5 uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology to target hair follicles, reducing hair growth by emitting gentle light pulses. The light is absorbed by the melanin in the hair, which then heats up and damages the follicle, leading to less hair growth over time. It's a safe and virtually painless method compared to traditional salon laser treatments.

Yes, the Braun Silk Expert Pro5 is designed for both women and men. It's versatile and can be used on a range of body parts, including the face, legs, arms, underarms, and bikini line. However, effectiveness can vary depending on individual hair and skin types.

Results vary by individual, but many users start to see a noticeable reduction in hair regrowth after just 4 weeks of using the Braun Silk Expert Pro5, with optimum results typically seen after 12 weeks of regular use. To maintain results, use the device every 1-2 months or as needed.

The Braun Silk Expert Pro5 is effective on a wide range of hair and skin types, but works best on individuals with darker hair and lighter skin tones, as IPL technology targets the melanin in the hair. It's not recommended for very dark skin or very light hair, including grey, red, or white, where IPL might be less effective or not recommended due to safety concerns.

  • Easy to use, does not cause much discomfort (for me), one+ month update below
Style: PL5137
I have read so many reviews and wanted to know a few key things-- so here it is on topics of: pain and can it do Brazilian. (I have only had it a week so cannot comment on efficacy yet, but by reading all the reviews, it seems like it works great for some people fast, great for some people slowly, and others, it just doesn't do great. Some ppl seem to give up if it does not work after 4 weeks, or if it shows reduction but not complete removal--go longer!!) [One month update below] So pain, for me: It does not hurt very much. I am using it on under arms which have little hair left post laser about 5 years ago. Also for every part of bikini/brazilian locations, it is mild discomfort, and fast. For me the sensation is like when you open a really hot oven and the air hits you, it is a hot hot air feeling in a small concentrated spot. There is a *slight* sting sensation where the follicles are, but it is hard to really tell what is going on. It lasts so briefly that it is not bad. I think that the more discomfort I get is from where the hair is longer, I think the long hair kind of burns up and gets hot and touches the skin. Sometimes where skin pigment is darker the sensor does not want to flash, but repositioning it will eventually figure it out. Skin pigment difference matter if you are interested in brazilian locations. Deeper skin tones down there may not flash. It is MUCH MUCH less painful than salon laser. I had a really hard time with salon laser pain on legs, underarms and just basic inner thigh type bikini line. This is worlds better. I do not have to steel myself for this, it is not stressful. My legs have very little hair left so going over them is pain free and fast. My skin is not that sensitive to this device, and if I go over a spot twice there is no after effect or burn. I try not to just in case it sensitizes over time. The most awkward part for me has been contorting to get the sensor flat on the skin, especially for bikini. I recommend getting a pari of dark sunglasses and wearing them while you use it. Gas station/supermarket wrap arounds with black lenses were what I bought. The light is super bright, and comes through closed eye lids. If you get migraines it may trigger one bc the light is super bright, and the rhythmic flashing may just bother you. If you have sensitive eyes to bright light, wear dark glasses. I wear them and turn away, or just put a hand over my eyes if it is not a lot of contortion to hold the device and press the button. One month update: I love this device. I use it more than once a week, I am impatient and have zero effects on my skin after using, no damage or burning. I do not rec doing this, just what I did. Progress with Brazilian areas has been going well. One month+ in and I now have experienced hairs falling out in parts of the brazilian area, leaving entirely hairless smooth areas behind. I have never had this level of hairlessness even with waxing years ago. Not all areas respond the same. Some still have clear regrowth with stubble typical of post shaving. I think i am a strong responder, and I was to laser as well. Underarms have no regrowth a month in, for the few hairs that were left post laser 5 years ago. Legs same. I randomly run it over thighs and have less hair, which was sparse post laser to begin with, plus I am older and have less hair than when young. I no longer feel as strong a need to wear sunglasses, and doing it in a bright room in day both helps me see all the hairs, and also lessens contrast so the light flash is less strong feeling. I feel zero apprehension doing this in brazilian area, minimal pain if there is a close shave. The razor that came with it is ridiculously good, and I ordered more blades. The main issue with Brazilian locations is contorting to angle the device to get all the spots. I get a little lazy and focus on easier spots. I highly recommend this to people with the right skin/hair contrast to work (see chart for hair/skin shades). I find it faster than laser, bc you don't need to wait many weeks between. It remains way less painful than laser, which was very painful for me. I feel like a salesperson for the device, it is so cool!!! ... show more

  • easy, painless, effective
Style: PL5137
I'm kind of blown away by how effective this device has been! I'm only using it so far on my underarms and lower legs but it's reduced my hair growth by about half after four treatments. I started noticing decreased hair growth in my underarms after the second treatment, it's taken until now to notice any changes with my legs. I'm very happy with the results so far - the hair is growing in so much more slowly so I no longer have to shave daily to wear shorts, my legs are so much softer, and no more strawberry legs :') The treatment is totally painless for me. I shave the day before so it's not burning hair and then each flash just feels like a warm click against my skin. I've heard it described as a rubber band snap, I wouldn't say it's that intense. For reference I have very light skin and dark coarse body hair. I had trouble the first couple sessions getting the device to flash, it needs to be totally flush against your skin or it won't work. That can be more difficult in the underarm, a smaller more precise head would be easier in that area. Just a minor complaint! ... show more

  • Guys... YES, YES, YES! Review after 5 weeks.
Style: PL5137
As a guy who "trims", I have been using the Philips Powergroomer for over a decade. It's fast and effective, but I needed to do it at least twice a week, always had a slight stubble and replacing the blades every 4 months adds up in cost. I stopped shaving eons ago because I get razor burns badly. I have used this device once/week (EVERYWHERE) for a month. The results are AMAZING! I actually shaved today for my weekly "zap session", but almost all of the hair is already gone. I only shaved because I am ready to be done with the weekly process and want each session to be as effective as possible. I had almost zero chest, arm, and leg hair before shaving today. The pubes still need a little more time, but hairs have reduced by about 80% already. This device works on men! I have an average Florida tan (for a white guy) and black hair. I do have a few gray chest hairs. This does not work on gray hair at all. For my first session, I did the Philips "trim" instead of shaving. The entire process smelled like burning hair. The zapping is not pleasant, it gets very hot. I had to take a few breaks before completing the session. After a week I noticed a little improvement, but nothing spectacular. For the second session, I used the Venus razor shipped with the device. Ugh, I knew I was going to get razor burn, but wanted to give this a real try. So, I did a little research on "women's shaving" before hitting the razor. I took a hot 10-minute bath before I started the shave, dried off well, then used the Braun for the second time. The heat from the zapping was more tolerable this time. Immediately after the zapping, I applied cortisone cream where I always get razor burns, then used a good collagen body lotion. I developed only VERY MINIMAL razor burn the next day, applied more cortisone, and everything was fine. So, my weekly process is to shave, zap, cortisone, and moisturize. After 5 sessions (once/week) I am extremely pleased with the results. I'll probably continue this process for 2 more sessions, then do it only once every 3 - 4 weeks, or as needed. I have no ingrown hairs, and I doubt I'll get any razor burn after this session. This bad boy works well on men! The instructions say to avoid the sun for at least a week after use. I went to the beach the day after a session and experienced no issues. But the device does work best on lighter skin. So, as a rule, I plan to avoid the sun until I get as "hairless" as possible. The lighter your skin tone, the more powerful and effective the laser will be. I think "the process" is important. Soak, shave, zap, cortisone, then moisturize. The heat gets tolerable (everywhere) with time, but I still take a break and let the device cool down a few times each session. The instructions say it should take about 10 minutes. That is BS! Plan on 30 minutes of zapping. The device is fantastic in that you don't have to keep pressing the button to zap. But it has to be fully flat against your skin. Then you just glide it over your body. Once in a while, the glide and zap function stops working. Just unplug it for a minute, then it works fine again. If you are working on an area where it is difficult to get it flat against your skin (like your knees or shins), just start it up on an easier part of your body like your thighs and it will start working well again. There is a smaller "laser head" for difficult areas, but I can get everywhere with the larger head now after practice. Do not get discouraged after the first use. If you have dark hair, this will work great! I wish I discovered this a decade ago! One of my best Amazon purchases EVER! ... show more

  • PAINLESS
Style: PL5137
I'm leaving this as a four star for now just because i haven't used it long enough to know for sure if it works, but: so far, i've used this twice (as of 5-13-26; i used it the week before too) and it is PAINLESS. okay, so i'm a weenie when it comes to pain and discomfort of any kind, especially in the 'down there' region that i am using this on. i used to do nair, but it started burning the crap out of me and i was splitting the skin on my inner thighs at the crease where they met my hips. i switched to a different cream but i wanted to stop using that kind of stuff so i went to this. i was leery because there were reports of pain and a 'rubberband snapping feeling' but i tried it anyways and i am happy to report a few things: 1) it's a bright light, so it does get warm. this is like being near a light bulb after its been turned on and cooled a little bit. not scalding. just a little warm. i am quick to say ow and stop doing something if it even mildly hurts and this is extremely tolerable. i recommend trimming/creaming the area the day before to reduce the hairs. longer hairs seem to get warmer. not necessarily painful, just a bit startling to me. 2) when you push the button and the light flashes, it clicks. i naturally flinch even though i know it is coming. i don't know if this is where the rubberband snapping idea is from or not, but this is okay too. just a quick click of light. 3) if you're using this on a spot that is flabby, pull the skin taut. i got frustrated until i figured out that's what you need to do in those areas. afterwards, it worked like a charm. some spots i have to change the head's direction, but that's not a big deal. 4) like i said, it gets a little warm. i notice a little lingering warmth in the treatment area but its nothing painful or something that i feel the need to use an ice pack on. 5) i get some mild itchiness. not a big deal. nothing crazy. hope this helps someone else that's on the fence about this. i'll try to keep updating as i go. from what i read online, this was like top 5 or top 10 rated in this area, which is why i ultimately gave this model a try fyi i have the light skin/dark hair tone. keep that in mind when comparing your experience to mine ... show more

  • Sort of "working" but not really
Style: PL5137
This does not do as much as it says it will. I've been using for 16+ weeks now. You will see most results in first 2-6 weeks. If you got thin and soft hair that you have not shaved/trimmed, it will work better. If you shaved/trimmed before then hair won't be as thin, and this will work partially. After 12 weeks I was hoping to see improvements, but that was not the case. You will still need to shave once a week or get used to hearing "you missed a spot" as some hair will grow back to full length and rest will be a "needle field" with some "smooth" patches. Basically if you use this and shave once a week it will be partly smooth and part needle works galore. It does not help with ingrown hair problem in fact shaving will bring this issue to a more severe state as before this I was using a trimmer to leave very short hair that did not "poke like a needle" but also did not feel like 2n day coarse growth and had no ingrown hair issues. This piece also has some issues at least on larger attachment the mirror part is bent solid piece and where they should connect to each end there is a large gap that probably impacts how things are reflected. You will also find burns (white ash sort of spots on the mirror) after use which I think may be due to reflector not being properly closed with that gap and side of it raised. It also needs to be inspected after each use and cleaned with cotton swab and alcohol as otherwise you will end up with build ups on lens and reflectors. For the price I expected a bit more quality out of this product where it seems they put more work into the case then little details that are around main components. The sensors also seem to be a bit out of wack at times as they won't allow you to activate on pale skin (I'm very white) and at times you feel just warm flash but others it feels like you getting electrocuted. Reading reviews, I figured my shave was not good enough and little hair were the issues, but that is not the case. Smooth shave or short hair seems to have no impact on that I could feel. It's just random and only thing I could find that may related is the white ash stains on the mirror usually means you have some painful flashes which I think is because the mirror was not fully sealed with that gap and slight raise causing the painful flashes. And again clean that thing every time or you will get black stains on yellow lens and they don't come off easy. 2 stars in my view. Edit: Dropping to 1 star. After 18+ weeks no improvement in fact some hair seems to be growing back faster so you have the short and the super long (between 1/4" to 1/2") all in same spot. This does nothing but waste time and money. Wish I could put 0 starts. ... show more

  • Life-Changing Results for Me
Style: PL5137
Not to be over dramatic, but this has honestly been life-changing for me. I have dealt with A LOT of facial hair for nearly 20 years, and after starting testosterone, something I already struggled with became even worse. I had considered scheduling laser hair removal treatments, but I worried it would be a waste of money being on the testosterone, so I decided to try an at-home option first. I spent a lot of time reading reviews before choosing one, and while this was more expensive than I originally wanted to spend, I reminded myself that compared to driving to appointments and paying for multiple professional sessions, it could still save me money in the long run if it actually worked. Thankfully, it did. I have been using this for about 12 weeks, around 2–3 times a week, mainly on my mustache, chin hair, and underarms. The difference has been amazing. My underarm hair is much thinner, lighter, and slower to grow. I have also used it on my arms, which I have shaved for years, and I have noticed the hair growing back finer, lighter, and much slower there as well. The biggest improvement has been my facial hair. I used to constantly pluck chin hairs and my mustache area, which was time-consuming and often led to ingrown hairs, redness, dark patches, and scarring. Since using this, the thick coarse hairs have dramatically reduced, and the irritation, scabs, and ingrown hairs are gone.! Do I still have some hair growth? Yes. I still shave and continue using it about once a week for maintenance, but the difference has been unreal. The hair is much finer, lighter, and far more manageable. Beyond the physical results, it has also given me more confidence, and that alone has made it worth it. If you are consistent and patient, this has absolutely been worth the investment for me. ... show more

  • Things to know before / my results thus far
Style: PL5137
I thought it would be helpful for potential customers/current users to read my POV including how to use effectively and what my results have been so far: I purchased in mid-July '23 and started using frequently/weekly towards the end of July. I'd say I'm on week 8 of my laser journey and I have seen results over time. Yes, it does take being diligent and this doesn't work overnight - you need to be patient and understand that it will take weeks to see any significant changes (I have dark, thick, fast-growing hair for reference). My complexion is light which is why this works for some and not for others. In the summer I typically need to shave daily or every other day. I can say that within these 8 weeks I've noticed major results on my legs. My underarm and bikini hairs are very thick and fast-growing, so those spots are taking a bit longer to see results, but I'm sticking to my weekly treatments and noticing those areas slowly progressing. You'll typically notice blotches of hair don't come back as quickly, so you know that the other areas are spots you need to continue to treat because you may have missed them. Overall I'm happy with the results so far and this has saved me thousands of dollars from going to a medspa. In terms of pain, I've done laser therapy at medspas before so I knew what to expect, if you're OK with light pinches (like many have said it might feel like a rubber band pinch) you'll be fine. I typically use the highest setting on my legs - which why I might be seeing results quicker there - and usually the medium setting on my underarms and bikini. How to use effectively: You do receive one razor from this vendor, however, you should be regularly replacing the razor head every 2-3 weeks, especially if you have thick/coarse hair. The trick to doing laser treatment effectively is getting as close to the hair follicle as possible, that way the laser can stop the hair growth at its earliest stage. If you're leaving a bunch of stubble/not getting a clean shave it won't work properly and hair will just grow back as normal. I saw an earlier review saying they were unhappy with this product because they had to shave first - "what's the point?", well, there's an actual science to this. You can't just use it without understanding how it works!! Make sure to do all of the research ahead of time! Also - no waxing, it removes the hair from the follicle every time you do it, allowing it to just grow back as normal and the laser won't have any hair to stop growth. If you aren't okay with clean shaving before each session than this isn't for you. Make sure you're keeping up with this weekly. If you want to see results you can't let weeks or months go by without doing it and expect to see huge differences. Last, make sure you lotion up after your session and stay out of direct sunlight for a couple of days after/use SPF! Laser can be harsh on skin and you may experience some discomfort, so lathering up with lotion and SPF is important. Hope this helps everyone who is interested in this product. Again, if you don't have the funds to shell out 1000's of dollars to get this done at a medspa then this might be a great option for you, but, it isn't for everyone!! ... show more

  • Effective, easy to use, LIFE CHANGING, and affordable.
Style: PL5137
This is a LONG-TERM review. I ordered this in 2022 and have used it now for about 2.5 years. I am extremely, extremely satisfied. For reference, I am a textbook laser hair removal candidate, according to previous professional laser hair removal consultations: medium to fair skin tone, with coarse, dark hair. I have used this on pesky, persistent facial hair that resisted previous professional treatments (sideburns, chin, lip, jawline) as well as under the arms, lower belly, and legs. Initially I treated every 3 weeks, and now I treat every 6-8 weeks. I dry shave my face and conventionally shave my underarms, legs, bikini area, etc,. and then treat with the laser. My primary goal was to eliminate the facial hair, as it caused a great deal of discomfort -- acne, ingrowns, self-consciousness about my appearance, etc. In short, I was miserable and really overwhelmed with how to treat this. Fortunately, this routine has eliminated about 99% of dark hairs on my chin, and completely eliminated my "extended" sideburn, upper lip, and jaw regrowth. My skin has improved immeasurably; it is clear, blemish free, and over time I have even seen a reduction in hyperpigmentation because of the lack of prolonged irritation. I cannot recommend this enough for people seeking permanent facial hair removal! I will continue to treat until the device no longer works, because I am still seeing minor improvements over time. I have also had excellent results on my legs and underarms as well, but the hair here has always been thicker, and so my results are not surprising, but I would be satisfied if this had been my primary goal as well. I now only need to shave these areas about once a month, and even then, my hair is softer, finer, and lighter. This has had excellent side benefits I hadn't anticipated. Not only is there a reduction in irritation from less frequent shaving, but in general, my skin has improved simply because of the improvement in my hair texture. I used to get uncomfortable ingrown hairs in these regions; now, I no longer get any. I also have seen an improvement in skin tone, reduced chafing, etc. Because my hair is so dense (pretty much everywhere on my body), these results took TIME. The vast majority of the success was in the first year, and now after 2.5 years, I feel like I look exactly how I had originally hoped. I would never have been able to afford professional treatment for this duration -- after an initial round of 6 treatments, I decided to try this at-home option, and it has been more effective than I could have hoped. TLDR: This device is very effective, especially for folks with high contrast hair/skin, and will save you thousands of dollars in professional treatments. It will work very well for any area, and is very easy to use. It may take a little longer than you think for certain hair types (like mine), but it is absolutely worth it. This device literally changed my life. I don't even wear makeup anymore -- I love the improvements it has made to my skin as well as the hair reduction. ... show more
