  • Bright, Crunchy, and Classic – A Legendary Overdrive
Style: Standard Pattern Name: Pedal
The Boss SD-1 is a true classic — and after finally adding it to my board, I totally get the hype. It delivers a crunchy, saturated tone that’s perfect for everything from classic rock riffs to smooth blues leads. Tone & Character: The SD-1 has a very distinct voice — bright and mid-forward, with that signature Boss bite. • With gain up: You get a tight, crunchy drive that’s great for ‘70s/‘80s rock rhythm tones and even some lead work. • With gain down: It cleans up well and gives you a snappy, bluesy edge — great for pushing a tube amp into natural breakup. • Saturation: There’s a nice compression to the drive that gives it sustain and smoothness without losing clarity. Versatility: Works great as a standalone overdrive or as a boost in front of another pedal or amp. It cuts through the mix thanks to its EQ profile and pairs well with both single-coils and humbuckers. Build Quality: Like all Boss pedals, it’s built like a tank. Reliable, sturdy, and ready for stage or studio use. Final Thoughts: The SD-1 is a no-frills workhorse — bright, crunchy, and saturated in all the right ways. If you’re chasing classic rock grit or bluesy bite, this pedal still holds up as one of the best in the game. ... show more

  • Classic gain pedal at a great price
Style: Standard Pattern Name: Pedal
This pedal is great. I use it at low gain & level at 100%. It takes the flub out of your bottom end. Tightens everything up & increases your gain. It's been heard on countless recordings. It's easy to use. Remember to unplug input jack if a battery is connected. ( I use a power block) it's one of the cheapest high quality gain pedals out there. If you're on the fence just buy it. You can't go wrong with ANY BOSS pedals ... show more

  • Incredible value, proven performance
Style: Standard Pattern Name: Pedal
Fantastic! I do own a Mxr Zakk Wylde Od, but I generally keep it elsewhere with an old Marshall valvestate amp. This pedal is fantastic, takes your gain from 4 to 8 no issue! I run it into a Prs MT 15 and dont have to crank the volume to get the saturated gain I want and sustain for days! It can push more noise out, but I tame that with a cheap noise gate coupled with it. Overall this pedal for the price is great, plug up change settings to taste, and go. ... show more

  • I should've bought one sooner
Style: Standard Pattern Name: Pedal
I don't know how I've made it through life this long without getting an SD-1. Along with the Ibanez TS-9, this is one of the most omnipresent overdrive pedals in history. I recently got a Marshall Origin 20H amp, which is meant to sound like an old Plexi and thus has a low level of gain out of the box. I got this to overdrive the amp a bit at low volumes. And wow does it sound good! It got me that classic 70s AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, etc. sound just by turning it up. I've always wanted a Tube Screamer, but the SD-1 is just so much cheaper. And it's built to last like every other Boss pedal. If you want to give your tube amp a little boost, look no further than the Super Overdrive. ... show more

  • Great for classic/alternative rock and blues, not so great for hard rock or metal
Style: Standard Pattern Name: Pedal
The full-chord voicing tone that you get out of this pedal is amazing. It's clean, crisp, and well balanced. I also like playing Vai and other virtuoso players. If you enjoy playing those stylings or hard rock or metal, this pedal may not be for you. "Super Overdrive" is not super overdrive, it's more like a subtle distortion when it comes to lead play. In fact, even with the settings to the max, you can still hear the acoustic tones of the notes breaking through, which is awesome if you're a blues player or 70s rock enthusiast. Don't get me wrong, it's a great distortion and really flairs up the pentatonics when playing over an acoustic rhythm section. Major form and modal play are quite weak though. It also pairs well with alternative rock (broader chord voicing). If you like low end, this pedal may not be a great choice. It has quite a bit of treble and is very airy (not sure if that's a word). I pair it with a chorus pedal, which really improves the tone. I think a lot of the demos that you see on this pedal are run through high-end amps, which really does not display how this thing sounds to the average person playing a $200 amp. Another trick that I've seen when people are demoing this pedal is that they add the super overdrive to a distorted channel to push it over the top, which sounds amazing. You cannot push this pedal over the top on its own. I hope this helps. ... show more

  • Good pedal!
Style: Standard Pattern Name: Pedal
The boss SD-1 is an awesome pedal. My humbucker pickups break up nicely with just this pedal plugged into my amp. I would describe it as a "tight crunch" tone, or a light distorted sound. And when I put the SD-1 before my distortion pedal-goodnight! It pushes my distorted gain to a whole new level! I'm very happy with this purchase. Most guitar players are going to like this pedal. ... show more

  • Such a great product
Style: Standard Pattern Name: Pedal
Can't say enough good things. It's a high quality product for a great price. I got one of these to replace a Behringer TO800. The Behringer is fine but I wanted a mid focused drive pedal with more gain/bite than it offered and knew the SD-1 would provide that. For $62 this thing was a great deal. It's built like a tank, solid metal. And it gives me that warm overdrive tube like sound I wanted with more flexibility in the gain knob than a tubescreamer. If you want that warm tube amp sound, this is perfect. I think some that rated this lower wanted a straight up distortion pedal which this is NOT. For the Boss version of that, look to the DS-1 not the SD-1. This is a medium gain overdrive, not a distortion pedal. ... show more

  • Great sounding OVERDRIVE
Style: Standard Pattern Name: Pedal
Many guitarists I love us this pedal, one of them more exclusively than others. That would be Mike ness, and although I don’t have an identical amp setup as him (not trying for it either), this awesome boss pedal alone gives the mike ness/social distortion sound. That came as a bonus, as I was really just looking to add a good overdrive pedal to my arsenal. Whether you are getting your first overdrive, or adding to your overdrive options, you can’t go wrong with this one. Boss is and always has been quality, with the effects they produce as well as the solid chassis that holds it all together. Amazing price too. Definitely recommend. ... show more
