  • Game Changer for Portability
I just purchased this saw to replace/augment a 15-year old Makita 10" chop saw. Over the years I've invested in the Bosch 18v system and I've amassed quite a few tools, none of which have disappointed. This is a new release and is one of the first battery operated compound miter saws. I have a workshop in back that's far from the house and runs via an off-grid solar array. I can supply power for lights and smaller tools, but it doesn't have the inverter capacity or battery juice to run 15A tools, so this adds a lot of flexibility for me. I also hate pulling cords for power when working (1st world problem, I know). The unit is heavier than my current chop saw, but this does a bit more as it's sliding (my existing was just a compound miter chop saw). Specs state it's ~30 lbs or so and that seems about right. The handle on top balances it well, but it is a little awkward to carry any distance. In the 100+ yard walk to my workshop, while balanced, it's large and you need to carry it a little ways from your body since the handle is centered on the unit. For short hauls it's fine. After about 30 yards I had to switch sides. Setup is easy, as is calibration. My Makita was never 100% accurate on angles since the miter stops had some play in them. Setting the gauge only helped a little, but it would work loose and before cutting anything precise I would have to do some test cuts and tweaks. This Bosch was 100% accurate right out of the box (they do calibrate it at the factory but recommend checking it when you get it). I made a bunch of 45-deg. angle cuts and the miter stops lock in with zero play. Setting the laser accuracy was also quick and it stayed accurate through several days of use - never needing to be reset. The laser makes really fast work of making cuts as you don't need to play with lining up the blade before each cut (yes, this is my first laser-assisted saw). The slide is very smooth. It can cut up to about 10 1/2" across at 90 deg. so it has a lot of reach, particularly for an 8 1/2" inch saw. There's a lock on the rear of the slide to hold it in place when using it just as a chop saw or when transporting it. The blade that it came with is a 24-tooth general purpose blade. I used it mostly on pressure treated 2x4s and it was fast at cutting with a narrow kerf. It expelled about as much dust as my current saw (it has a bag, but some escapes). I'll test it again to see if hooking it up with a vacuum helps (I have the 18v battery Bosch shop vac). One thing to note - after about 10 cuts or so, the laser pretty much disappeared and I had to blow out the housing as dust would kick up and obscure the laser. No big deal as I keep the 18v Bosch blower handy to clear off work easily. As for power... wow. I have several 18v 8.0AH Core batteries. I did about 100 cuts with it and the battery was only down 1 bar. The saw starts up and gets to speed fast - faster than my 120v Makita. It never bogs down and powers through every cut I made. The brake stops it quickly as well. It's also much quieter than my Makita, both when it's running and cutting. I'm am 100% pleased with this saw and if you are looking for a battery powered miter saw, definitely consider this one. The freedom of cords is awesome and this saw makes a great addition to my arsenal. ... show more

  • Solid tool, great buy and PORTABLE . . . but a little messy
This is now one of my favorite tools. I have long been a fan of Bosch, so I do suppose that makes me a little biased, but I'm sure that you'll enjoy this saw as well, even if it's your first Bosch tool. The fact that this is a cordless saw makes it a game-changer. It's surprisingly light and easy to set up, and functions well on a portable table. It's a solid tool and well-made, almost defying its light weight. The blade spins up quickly, all the movements are smooth and precise, and the saw is a powerhouse. I used it all afternoon on a single charge. The blade brake engages quickly, spinning down from full speed to stopped in just a few seconds. Two of the movements - the slide and the vertical - can each be locked. You'll lock both when transporting, but you can also lock one or the other for chop cuts or slide cuts. I originally thought the laser guide was going to be a silly over-the-top feature, but it's an amazing time-saver for lining up your work! So, with all these amazing accolades, why isn't my review for five stars? Well, there were a few shortcomings. First, I was shocked when I opened this box to find the saw packed in styrofoam. I mean, c'mon, it's 2020! It's not an exaggeration to say that styrofoam (more technically, expanded polystyrene) is one of the worst things for the planet that we've created in decades. It's not practically or functionally recyclable, and every bit of it ends up breaking down into smaller and smaller bits, and eventually end up in the ocean. Let's not forget that styrene (one of the key components in EPS) is a known carcinogen. Packaging aside, the saw works fabulously, with a few caveats. For one, the dust bag might as well not have been there. I would be generous if I said that 10% of the sawdust ended up in the bag. Since it had a dust bag attachment, and I planned to use this saw primarily outside, I didn't bother to consider vacuum attachments. I'll have to rethink that, after all, since the workspace ended up a mess rather quickly. Oh, and that awesome laser guide? It doesn't work if the saw is full of sawdust. The instructions tell you how to clean off the laser guide shield, but doesn't mention that you'll have to blow all the sawdust out of the saw itself. Seriously, it's a big deal. It's shocking what a mess this made. I'm guessing that once I attach a vaccuum to this, it'll be amazing . . . but I shouldn't have to, should I? ... show more

  • Small project crusher, mobility is hard to beat
Absolutely love this saw. I already own a 12" miter, but I do projects in both my garage and backyard shed and it was a pain to have to move the big guy back and forth on a stand. With this, I can do quick cuts anywhere including inside my house with ease. Definitely recommend an 8ah battery on hand so there's no potential issue running out of juice. ... show more

  • Was able to return for refund.
The saw I got worked great except for 3rd day,and I used this saw heavily, the motor would not start in Temps of 20 degrees, after a couple of hours of sitting it finally started working again, I tried different batteries too, but no luck. I live in a cold climate so I need a saw that will work in below freezing temperatures. ... show more
