  • Functional
This battery system works, for sure, but has some serious shortcomings, and is substantially inferior to other tool battery systems on the market. The batteries are held into the charger by two plastic tabs that seat into slots. This is more like a cheap walk-talkie radio or my circa-1999 DeWalt NiCAD tools, and less like other modern tool batteries I have, which slide in on rails and seat positively. The fitment is sloppy and my batteries don't seat consistently in the charger, requiring multiple attempts at insertion. The contacts are vertical, meaning they are prone to getting gummed up with debris in a jobsite environment. The charger charges, but in its own sweet time. It doesn't give any indication as to how full the battery is. The LED indicates charging, charged, and standby (no battery inserted), and this is all indicated by a single diode, so you need to decode the flash pattern. The charge time is pathetic, it takes about an hour to charge a 2ah battery from dead. Compare this to the Makita system that can charge a 2aH battery to 18 volts in under 20 minutes. Bosch used to make a 30 minute version of this charger, but it did not pass some kind of energy usage certification, so they discontinued it. Casual users might not mind the charge time, but users working with these will need a lot of these batteries and chargers to prevent downtime. My GHO12V planer, for example, can easily, easily discharge three of these batteries in the time it takes this charger to recharge one of them. The batteries themselves are really small and light. They lack any kind of charge level gauge. The tools all seem to have level gauges, albeit a rather wonky implementation that just shows thirds, and then only for a moment when you first turn the tool on. If you want to check the battery, you need to insert it in the tool and turn it on. If you want to see what's left after your task, you need to turn the tool off and turn it back on again. Result: tools get set down with nearly dead batteries, no one notices until you pick it up to use it again. These are inexpensive for a brand-name tool battery, about half the price of Makita LXT per watt-hour. The warranty claims are a little hazy and disingenuous, somehow "PROVANTAGE 3 year coverage" which is emblazoned on the front of the box means 2 years of warranty on the battery, one on the tool, and then two years where they will send you replacement parts to fix it yourself, which is of course impossible on most modern tools. Elsewhere on the packaging for this battery/charger set it says "1 year warranty," so who really knows what is going on here. Durability has been fine so far in my usage, but I am really suspicious of the lock-in tabs. There are just two pieces of plastic holding this in, and you bend the plastic in a bit to remove the battery. A latch mechanism that relies on the flexibility of the plastic seems like a recipe for failure to me. Compare this to a mechanical latch on the Makita system, tensioned by a spring. The strangest thing about this system is that it is apparently not voltage regulated. Bosch claims this battery includes discharge protections, so assumably it can lock itself out at a certain voltage, yet both my Bosch 12v tools are capable of discharging the battery until it is giving less than 12 volts, causing the tool to slow down. Did they intentionally set the discharge protection to kick in somewhere well under 12v? If so, why? It's a peculiarity to this system that is extremely annoying in use. Suddenly your tools is misbehaving, and you have to remember that the tool slows down under load as the battery dies, like the NiCAD tools of yesteryear. I adore Bosch's 12v planer, and it has become a key part of my workflow, so these batteries are part of my workflow too. They are functional but I find them to be the weakest aspect of the Bosch 12v system. ... show more

  • Good added value for 12v tool owners
I purchased this to provide increased battery life and better storage for the 12v drill and impact driver that I have. Since then I have added the reciprocating saw and the jigsaw to my collection, and I'm a big fan of the Bosch 12v tool line. Batteries: These batteries are 2.0 Ah, which is a small bump up in capacity from the batteries that came bundled with the drill and impact driver. I definitely notice the longer battery life, and it helps keep me working a little longer. I have no complaints about the batteries at all. They charge quickly, and seem to retain their capacity with frequent use over several months. LBOXX: I like the idea of the LBOXX system and I own three of the LBOXX-1. The modular approach and bring able to click the cases together is nice. The only improvement I would make is that the inserts (for all tools I have) make it so that less than half of the case's internal volume is actually usable for storage. There is a lot of wasted space that could be better allocated. That's why I give this 4 instead of 5 stars. I would still recommend the Bosch 12v line and the LBOXX system... It could just be a little more efficient. Charger: The charger performs very well. Even with constant use, I can always recharge a battery before I use the next one up. The 30 minute charger does just what it advertises. ... show more
