I liked how this mix was so easy to use when repotting my bonsai. It handled very well. However, one thing I dislike is that after a couple waterings the material seems to form a surface that is not quickly penetrable by water. I discovered this by pouring some water onto it and rather than seeping down it sat there, then flowed over the edge of the pot. It seemed to pond, as if the surface was water-tight, and only after nearly a minute did it begin to seep in. So watering the bonsai now takes several minutes as I wait for what I've poured on there to gradually seep down so that I can pour more water in. Once the soil is moistened, then water seeps faster (capillary action, I presume).

As a novice, I guess I didn’t realize that you need to change the soil as frequently as you do. At first it had excellent drainage- but the soil became clay-like under the surface and the tree I had grown from seed ended up dying.

I have used this soil as a "Organic BASE MIX" for all my bonsai for almost ten years now. Its very good as a base mix, BUT it is expensive. Considering that I mix this with other types of soil, (i.e. deciduous, conifer, etc..) it can get expensive, but when it comes to my trees, old, young, VERY old, it has performed so well, I'll spend the money. You can use this as a single soil, but depending on if you need slow, fast or very fast draining, it might need to be mixed with other grit types. This by itself, drains slow, but holds moisture. If you like faster draining soil, mix it with a bigger grit like a deciduous or confer mix. In all my years using this, I have NEVER had a tree die from this soil. The people saying their tree died after using this soil had other issues. Re-potting can be a delicate process depending on the tree and can have consequences. Know how much moisture your tree will need, how often you plan on watering, mix it accordingly.

Use it like it is for established trees or add it to other soils to make them better. I’ve bought this at least 5 times and have never been disappointed. My trees love it. I usually mix this 50:50 with normal potting soil for new cuttings.
