Filled one tray with lettuce, peas, and carrots. After 4 days I have 3/4 of the seeds sprouting so working very effective. The only downside is that the way the 3 trays come together. Taking the upper lid loose to check things can be a bit tedious due to a snug fit. Even being a snug fit some condensation does seep out on the edges. The middle tray is cut back far enough that it's tricky to get ahold of to lift, but when loaded it flexes too much making it difficult to add any water. Overall, it does what it needs to do and moving forward I'll be able to work around to use it better, but be forewarned that the plastic is very thin. ... show more

Got these to help get my garden started a little earlier. I didn't think about the grow lights being inside the dome. I normally take the dome off as soon as they come up and are starting to get their first true leaves. If you take the dome off, you take the light off too. Convent to have it all in one and you can open the humidity dome to let air exchange. I just can't get a fan on them to make the plants stronger with a dome and no dome means no light. I have heard people complain about having them (the 2 units) close together but I normally start my starts on the same area so that isn't a problem. Nice controls. Comes with gloves (I don't use them, too big and bulky) and some green tools for working with your seedlings. They are okay and somewhat helpful, bulky for small plants. Good for the beginner or people that don't have a lot of time to spend with their plants when they start coming up. If it matters it is made in China. ... show more

I've become a fan of seed starter trays with attached grow lights for helping to get my seedlings off to a good start. This set has the transparent covers that help keep seeds moist, plus the vents so that you can control the humidity better and also the attached lights. Really, everything you want to help grow healthy baby plants. I'll note that these small cells can provide a challenge for removing each seedling when it's time to move it to a new environment. Depending on the plant, I sometimes try to 'scoop' from the top with a rounded tiny shovel or push from the bottom, possibly damaging the tray, and sometimes a combination of both. I mention this just because although I like the very large trays in some instances (such as planting very tiny seeds when you expect some waste but just sort of flood the thing), the smaller 12-cell trays can be easier for removing things. Also, I've learned not to mix different seed types in my trays because they often grow at different rates and then it's harder to give each type of seedling the care it needs at that moment. The media could not be loaded. These BlumWay Seed starter trays are pretty nice items for the gardener. They are larger than any other starting trays we've used in the past (and are still using, actually); with 40 cells per tray! Like the other smaller trays, they also have the vented lid with adjustable ventilation lids to keep the level of humidity in the "mini-greenhouse" optimal and prevent the soil from drying out too easily while the seeds are germinating. What really sets these trays apart, however, are the grow lights that clip right into the trays to provide needed light for the seedlings to get a good start before being transplanted into their final growing destination (we've been using grow bags). There are individual light tubes in this kit, two clip into specially formed depressions in each of the two tray lids. Each tube contains mostly "daylight white" LED elements, with a few blue LEDS per tube. Apparently blue light is the most efficient light color for promoting photosynthesis in the plants, so it's nice that these were included. The tubes are hard-wired into a little box that controls the light output: this box contains control button to turn the tubes on and off by groups of two (all four tubes on, two tubes on, the other two tubes on, and off); to dim all the lit tubes from 100% to 80% to 60% to 40% to 20% and back again; and to set a timer for the light 'on' time (3, 6, or 12 hours, as well as timer off for continuous operation). It would have been nice to have the tubes detachable from the controller to keep the two unused ones out of the way if only planting in one tray, but that's a minor quibble. Included in the box are two tray sets, each with a base tray, the tray containing the cells for planting, the clear plastic lids, and two vents per lid for humidity control. Also included is an instructional manual, and of course the star of the show: the USB-powered light tube system, which even includes the USB AC adapter. How about that, a product that actually comes with the AC adapter? That's a rarity nowadays! There are also a couple of little extras included, such as a couple of plastic (but strong) mini-digging tools, a pair of cloth gloves to help keep your hands clean while digging in the dirt, and a stack of plant identification stakes so you don't forget what you planted where. This is a nice package that should really help get flower and vegetable seedlings get a good start in life! ... show more

This system consists of two blow-molded plastic seed trays with clear lids, four adjustable vent-discs that sit in recesses on the lids to regulate airflow (from completely closed to only probably about 2"sq total opening per tray), and one LED grow-light with four light sticks that snap into recesses on the clear lids. Nothing about it is particularly extravagant. The plastic is fairly thin - but is definitely enough for the purpose. My one complaint is that all four light sticks are hard-wired to a single controller. This means if you don't need both trays, you have the stash the extra lights nearby, and if you use both trays they need to be within a few feet of each other at most. The controller lets you turn the lights on and off in pairs, so you can turn off the lights you're not using, but there's no individual brightness adjustment. Like many gadgets in this class, the lights have an auto-off timer but no recurring auto-on, nor any light sensor. Given that you're likely checking on seedlings every day this isn't a huge drawback, but either of those features would have made a nice addition. ... show more
