Description

The BR-73 is the flagship of the 000-sized Contemporary Series of acoustic guitars. Using solid spruce for tops, handcarved braces, choice Santos rosewood for the back and sides, and a traditional dovetail neck joint on a solid mahogany neck, we have created a guitar with great looks and tone. The intricate pearl and abalone inlay work on the fingerboard, body, and headstock and delicate marquetry center strip on the back are touches of fine art. The comfortable 000-sized body and slim mahogany neck make it easy to play. Contemporary Series Blueridge guitars offer prewar performance with a clean, modern look and style.

  • extraordinary value
I have owned Martin and Larrivee dreadnoughts but have been playing jazz on an archtop for the last few years. I wanted to get back to playing some of my old material on a smaller acoustic which did not feel like wrestling with an elephant. This guitar is at least the equal of the expensive ones I have owned, with no dull spots on the fretboard; the tone is rich and sustained throughout. It strums as well as it picks. The finish is immaculate. Two minor quibbles: the headstock is a bit small and the tuner layout cramped, and I would probably have increased the string spacing by 1/32. I put on a set of 11-50s (slightly lighter than the 11-52s it came with) and had to tweak the truss rod a bit. I may have the bridge saddle filed down 1/64 depending on what happens with the changes of weather and humidity. You could spend $2000 and not get a better OOO than this. ... show more

  • this guitar is very easy to play
I have had one of these guitars for around 8 years. It required the typical setup. A guitar bridge, in my opinion, should always be too high on a new instrument since different players have different styles. Some styles require high action, and you can never increase the height of an acoustic guitar bridge. So (as I usually do with new acoustics) I filed down the bridge to lower the action. The tone was unchanged (good), the action was improved (good), and the intonation was improved (good). I was conservative on the first shave down of the bridge, and I was able to lower it a bit more on the second. I also lowered the nut a bit to help with the intonation when fretting down by the headstock, but a little goes a long way there so I didn't take too much off. All of this is to say, this guitar is very easy to play. It also sounds good. Mine has very rich harmonics that are complex without being either muddy or distracting. All of the strings can be played up the neck without the treble strings becoming overly dominant. In other words, the guitar maintains its character with and without a capo. As far as looks go, it's got all sorts of bling. All of the inlays are well done, and there are a lot of them. If you don't particularly care for flashy looks, this guitar might annoy you. But for what it's worth, I don't think it's gaudy. I think it has a tasteful amount of embellishment. As for the negatives, the Blueridge headstock is stupid. As the other reviewer(s) mentioned, the headstock is cramped. My solution is to wrap the low and high E strings in the opposite direction to the convention. This makes it annoying to tune (since you have to turn the tuning key the opposite direction to what you are used to), but it has some advantages based on the cramped layout of the headstock. First, the strings don't overlap. If you follow convention, the low E and A string will overlap to some degree (I don't recall this being an issue with the high E and B strings since they're so thin). Second, the high and low E strings are then pulled straight to the tuning peg and not at an angle across the nut. I've noticed a slight increase in tuning stability since I've begun stringing this guitar in this fashion. Overall, this is an annoyance, but it doesn't anything to reduce my assessment of the instrument. Lastly, a word on its construction. The instrument is very well crafted. All the joints are good and when you play it, it sings as a cohesive unit. That said, it is not a robust instrument. I don't think it could take a beating. I also don't think it would resonate nearly as nicely as it does if it were hardier. But that's an expected trade off. You're also not going to pay this much for a beater guitar when perfectly good models exist out there to bring to the beach or the campsite, so there's that. Also, the guitar has a strap button on the body, but none for the neck. You can always do the old "shoestring north of the nut" trick, or install a button at the base of the neck. But be aware that you'll have to do something to get a strap on it. Having bought this guitar, I don't see how I could reasonably ever justify paying more for another 000 body guitar. Paying more would get you some luxury features, but not better sound. The only improvement I would really like to this guitar is an ebony fingerboard. I love the way they feel and I think it would suit this guitar very well. ... show more
