  • When it works it's great - two dead probes in a row though...
Size: No Extension Cable Set
UPDATE 8Apr19: After a lot more homework I have found the most likely reason my initial probe was DOA - doesn't explain the failure of the second probe after a week or two but does have an impact on future buyers of this probe from ANTCLABS. - The initial probe I purchased ended up being a version 3 of the PCA (as printed on the PCA). Apparently the change ANTCLABS made in moving from V2.x to V3 was to implement a change to reduce the likelihood of an inadvertent probe extension (good intentions and great idea!). The implementation, however, lacked a little in way of confirming this change would work with as many machines and firmware packages as possible. Out of the box, as of this writing, the V3 BLTouch probes will NOT work on Creality Ender 3, 3 Pro, or any of the Ender 10 series printers with any of the currently released Marlin firmware. - There are a few work arounds discussed on the Github site for Marlin and those appear to "fix" the Ender 3, 3 Pro and base 10 series printers compatibility with these probes but not the 10S or 10 Pro. These fixes, at the moment, are: 1) Download the Marlin 2 firmware (currently not released but available) and make the standard modifications for that firmware plus an additional one to enable the V3 probe or 2) add a pullup resistor to the probe as described in the Github discussion or 3) (this is the current ANTCLABS recommendation) - remove a specific capacitor from the main PCA in the Creality printer (not the most recommended solution based on the Github discussion). There is another review of this product in this lengthy list of reviews that points to this same information and that's what led me to the information I'm posting here. So - this probe still remains a nice probe but let the buyer beware - this probe is genuinely for those who like to fiddle with their kit to get things working right. If that's not you then look elsewhere. If it is - enjoy! ORIGINAL Review: What I like about the BLTouch is that it is a mechanical probe. It isn't going to be confused by a glass surface. The product is simple and easy to install. What I don't like about the BLTouch is that my first one arrived DOA. It responded like the probe should and correctly responded to the controls from the Ender 3 Pro to extend/store/test/ect and the red light would come on and turn off at the appropriate times. BUT...when put into action the probe would never trigger to register contact with the build bed (or my finger). The pin would snap back up but the Z-Axis would not stop moving down. Checked the wiring and double checked the wiring and the setup in Marlin but it was the probe. Ordered a second BLTouch to replace the DOA unit and after doing nothing other than just plugging it in and fitting it to the mounting bracket the new (No. 2) BLTouch worked perfectly and I loved it. This second probe continued to operate perfectly through many prints over the course of about a week or so then started intermittently failing to probe. Resetting the print job and starting over cleared the error and the second run it worked fine each time. This until it finally quit altogether - no more red light at all but the blue light is on. The probe will not respond to commands at all. So - overall the idea of the BLTouch is great (to me) and there seem to be many people very pleased with it. For the cost I'll give it one more go but if this one dies early as well or arrives dead like my first one I'll write this probe off and switch to the EZABL which was my second choice. It would appear that quality control may be an issue for this probe so I hope the third time is a charm! I'll find out in two more days how this third chapter will begin. ... show more

  • Technical install, but the unit works!
Size: With 1M Extension Cable Set
This product works as advertised, with a few caveats. The connection from the extension cable to the mainboard is generally loose and can cause unexpected behavior if not secured. I wedged some thin cardstock in beside it to hold it tight and that finally did the trick. I won't lower the product rating for that since its a known issue in the community and doesn't reflect the actual performance of this genuine and functional BL Touch unit. Some people have attached the correct style of connector for their specific board in their install tutorials. I would not rate the install as "easy" since I do not have pin tools and opted to strip and solder the wires to connect the extension cable to the factory one. Once that was done, I fed the wires through the braided cable management compression tubes down to the mainboard and plugged it it. Having the 4.2.2 mainboard, I didn't require any additional interface equipment (transfer board). Older boards will, and you may want to look for a complete interface kit if you have an older board. This kit doesn't have a mounting bracket for the BL Touch, so I printed my own. Flashing the new firmware from creality.com/download was easy for this model of mainboard (4.2.2 or the newer 4.2.7), I simply erased an SD card, placed the new .BIN file on the SD, inserted it into the printer, and booted it up. After that finished, I wiped the card, loaded some print files, and returned the card to the printer before configuring the new setup since settings will be saved on the SD card. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the performance of the BL Touch and, having fixed my loose connection to the mainboard, the unit itself works perfectly every time. I have since upgraded to the 4.2.7 mainboard, and the unit also works perfectly with that. I have also added OctoPrint on a Raspberry Pi and the bed visualization plugin that displays the mesh data from the BL Touch in a graphical format makes it even easier to fine-tune a perfect base-level print platform so that the automatic bed leveling system has less work to do. ... show more

  • You'll need to buy more hardware, but totally worth it.
Size: With 1M Extension Cable Set
Seeing all the reviews about how worthwhile the headache of installing it was, I went ahead and bought it. Unfortunately, the mounting bracket (extremely necessary) and bootloader (optional if you use a micro sd card to load the required firmware) are not included. The 1m extension was extremely necessary, and the supplied wires didn't fit onto the pins, which required some soldering with the supplied pin inserts to get everything to fit snugly into place. Be careful when finding documentation, it seems to vary a lot depending on which model of printer you have, which motherboard it has, any upgrades or sensors it has, etc. which make a big difference in your pinout (resulting in smoke for me) and which firmware you need. Once all that was done though, I've never had cleaner edges or better, more consistent adhesion. No more manual leveling the bed with paper, I just press the level bed button, give it a minute, and get a perfectly leveled print. The setup AFTER the installation is another headache, but much more manageable. Maybe find yourself a different package that includes the mounting bracket and fully review several pinout pages, tutorials, manuals, and your own machine to avoid damaging it. ... show more
