  • OOPS, HE DID IT AGAIN!
I've been reading Victor Methos' books for maybe 6 months now having started out reading The Neon Lawyer. That one hooked me, but then every next one I read keeps that hook firmly set. I was really shocked with Methos' departure from modern day to back when the West was wild and horses were the primary mode of transportation. But apart from a reference to a young man who wore his pants too low on his hips which could only make me think of TODAY'S boys who like their pants sagging, not ever thinking any boys or men did all those years ago, Mr. Methos transferred his writing skill brilliantly back to over 100 yesrs ago. I actually really enjoyed his big change in setting! The only thing I'm worried about is running out of books he's written to read, especially since I can never get past one day before finishing each book because I can't put them down! And I don't know how an author could make a lot with their books on Amazon Kindle, but I sure am grateful I can read them there for free via my Kindle Unlimited account because I couldn't afford to support my reading habit if I had to pay for all the books I read! Thanks again for another fantastic read Mr. Methos! 👍😉 ... show more

  • better than expected
Part of the story is like a Steinbeck short story, Flight, and some of it reminds me of a Clint Eastwood Western, but overall not a bad effort. Unfortunately Methos has a tendency to throw more characters into his plots and then kill them off. Not really a fan of Westerns, but this one is very readable. ... show more

  • Loved it
Absolutely loved this book. By the time I was a quarter-way into it, the writing style, characters, "accents," were all perfectly normal and I could hear the dialogue in my head. By the end, I was fully immersed and wanted the book to continue. It took me to places I'd never been to before. That's magical writing, and Victor Methos is an incredible writer. ... show more

  • An interesting look at a past American period.
Here is Victor Methos, again the ruthless author. In this era of the modem thriller he manages to pull of an off beat detective story, set in the early 19th century about 20 years after the American civil war. The place is a small, lonely, dusty little town in the mid west. The sheriff is about 45, not very good at the job, unassertive, unable to stand up to a philandering mayor who's more interested in the 4th July celebrations and the considerable income to the town's business interests than in keeping an innocent boy away from the gallows. They have a serial killer on the loose and nobody wants to admit it. The story is told in the first person, consequently you read it as he thinks it, in his language with all the grammatical errors and misspelling one would expect from the period. Inefficiency and drunkenness, with the odd shoot out is the order of the day. Many get killed for stupid reasons, and horror plays it's part. It really is a very interesting study of life around those times. It is well worth your attention and on completion you will have gained another perspective. PS: Ignore the remarks of the idiot reviewer who said it was "badly edited"! He completely missed the point! ... show more

  • Outstanding
BLACK SKY (A Mystery Thriller) Victor Methos How does he do it? Switch locales, switch idioms, switch the language and mental sophistication of the earthy protagonist! I am in awe. Now we are in pioneer days in New Mexico. Our homespun sheriff serves at the behest of the handsome, womanizing mayor, a man whose objectives never waver: profit above all. That first corpse? Our savvy sheriff, a Civil War veteran, can see the stab wounds and the marks left by the saw blade, but for some reason the mayor persuades the town doctor that it is wolves or coyotes. Yeah? So what's really going on? When bounty hunters arrive, it gets interesting, particularly when they force an innocent man to confess. Exciting climax, even though at one point I was confused about the number of horses. Outstanding. ... show more

  • This Was A Different V.Methos Thriller!
I've read many of Victor Methos' books, so I made a list, so as not to re-read one or another, of his books. It's very interesting, that this author's background is that of a lawyer. My favorite character is "Jon Stanton." But the "Desert Plains Series," was also fantastic!

  • Dark with a Happy Ending
I have come to really enjoy Victor Methos' style of writing and his skewed way of looking at the World. His characters are unique but he needs to flesh out the secondary female ones. This and the Baudin & Dixon books are great except for one little thing. The affectation he has some of the characters speaking by using poor grammar, often when it isn't plausible, and in this story with some strange patois that became irritating. Mr. Methos always leaves me wanting to know more of the background story of his characters. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants something new in the Murder-Thriller genre. ... show more
