Description

In BLACK+DECKER Deck Codes & Standards, national authority on building codes, Bruce Barker, explains how to both design and build decks within legal limits. In BLACK+DECKER Deck Codes & Standards Barker accurately shows how to design and build decks right. Given that every year in the U.S. more than 120,000 people are injured by deck collapses, and more than 50 die, following Barker's careful and detailed advice is the surest way for a homeowner to protect against disaster.Using the same common-sense approach he used in his bestselling book BLACK+DECKER Codes for Homeowners, Barker isolates the aspects of deck building that are the most frequent sources of trouble and shows--with photos, illustrations, and commentary--exactly how to do it correctly.Barker's new book is not only for DIYers who are building a brand new deck. National deck building codes have changed significantly in the past five years: 4 x 4 posts are no longer allowed for structural purposes that a few years ago were deemed fine, and minimum diameter requirements for concrete posts have doubled in many applications. If your existing deck is more than two or three years old, you'll want this detailed but accessible volume. Read more

  • This book is a blessing and a curse
I bought this book to make sure that I build my deck correctly and to code. The information in it is solid and the pictures are great! The only problem is now I can’t look at a deck without critiquing it. It’s amazing how many decks are build incorrectly. Just about every deck how-to on YouTube and Pinterest makes some kind of mistake. Usually incorrect attachment of the beam to posts or ledger board mistakes. ... show more

  • Excellent book on current overall codes for rebuilding (or new) decks
I'm in the process of redecking a 25 year old deck. This book was by far the best of the three i purchased for this project. It goes into details on the new codes as well as why the code has been strengthened so that you can upgrade your deck while you are modernizing it. I actually bought a second copy to loan to a friend that is also rebuilding his deck at the same time since i didn't want to share my copy. ... show more

  • Workable knowledge
This book provides plenty of pictures and descriptions of how decks should be built. Would like to have span and load tables included.

  • Great book ... until
This is a great book until you start looking at the deck that was installed on your house by someone else. Yeah....code, what code? the Bro Code? I bought this book because I was going to construct a deck off a shed and build a potting area, but then looked at what was already on my home built in 2005. I found 8 issues in the blink of an eye. This book covers everything, but always check your local building code....and get that permit. ... show more
